So What Now?

Well Finger Taming is going well. Tweety is now stepping up without Millet, and he sometimes feels anixious to get on as she likes to chew the tips of fingers quite a bit and play with my thumb. Bluey On the other hand, steps up with millet there, but he was thinking about stepping up without it but he decided to back away. Tweety would back away from time to time but she does step up on her own which is good progress. When would a good time to bring one or both birds outta the cage for some room training?

you can start now since they are getting used to you but I would only do it in a room that is small so they can't fly into walls and get hurt along with flying up to the tippy top is usually what they do. You can start with the bravest one first and bring him out and work with him first for a couple days to get him used to being out. Remember whatever the brave one does the wimpy one will follow. So if your brave one flys out of control and is scared to death your other one will be worse :D.

Keep up the good work...I hope that response helps.

You and I are in similar places with training/taming our budgies. Mine have been coming out now for 2 or 3 days. The first mistake I made was not having anything for them to do the first time they came out. Its been easier for me because we have a third, VERY tame budgie, so she does a lot of encouraging. I created the 'training plate' which I put all kinds of goodies on and they get to have a little feast when they come out. I mostly keep them right by the opening of their cage so they can go right back in if they get too afraid. But inevitably, they decide to fly anyway. I'm sure you've read it before, but an important thing to remember (and its difficult to do when your babies are fluttering around in what seems to be a panic) is not to chase them when they fly away. I've found that mine will fly around and usually come back to their cage, and if they go somewhere else, I follow them at a distance and when they land I slowly approach them to see if they'll step up on my finger so I can bring them back home. It seems to work pretty well for us. Good luck adn let us know how it goes!

:ausb: All I can say is carry on guys, I have both tame and nontame budgies. :greenb:

Yea i've tried the plate of goodies idea. They both enjoy a bath, they actually normally race eachother to it when i put it in their cage, so i put that outside the cage also. But they really don't want to leave the cage. When i try and bring them out, they panic and jump back into the cage. I don't want to force them out.

Good idea not to rush them. Don't want to make them more scared than they already are. They'll come out soon enough.

so you think i should let them come out purely on their own choice instead of me bringing them out on my finger?

:D I would give them a couple of days but do have a bit of millet on hand to entice them. :greenb:

It isn't really a good idea to let them come out of their cage on their own when they re not tame. this is because if you leave them to it they think that they have managed to scare you away and are able to come out without you.

Hmmmm....! We have to rethink how we're doing this then, work with them more in the cage rather than calling it good. Although our goal wasn't necessarily to tame them a whole bunch, just enough to make it safe for them to come out, so taht they can get exercise and release energy so they're less obnoxious. We kind of figured they would never be very tame since they're older and bonded to each other already.
