Posted December 2, 200618 yr hi i own three budgies. most of the time thhey are :angel:s but when sunflower (my beautiful yellow budgie) who died was alive they had terrible fights! Included in these endless battles they tore up each others nest boxes. Also it has left Dipsy (the father budgie) in a bit of a mess. His beak is bent sideways! he can eat well but im still worried. But theres more. Bellablue the mother, has also died, and Dipsy has taken up with Blue-berry (his dauter!). They have already laid eggs but since the nest box is in tatters i dont know what will happen! im also a bit creaped out about this father & daughter thing ! But my mum said that if any do hatch i can take my pick! But other than that Ocean (Dipsys son) has taken a bit of a disliking to a big black spider ( about as big a someones thumb) that is biulding a huge web in each corner of the cage. :excl: I NEED HELP :excl:
December 2, 200618 yr First of all, you shouldn't be colony breeding. Females will fight over nest boxes and it can get really viscous. Either, remove the nest box or seperate your breeding pair from the other female. How old are your budgies? Budgies should be at least a year old before they can be breed and 15 to 18 months old preferebly. Is your cage an indoor or outdoor cage? How big is it?
December 2, 200618 yr Part of being a responsible pet owner is learning about your pets so that they have the best possible care and attention. You are here, so thats a good start to finding out more about your budgies. When the mother budgie died, then the nesting box should have been taken out of the aviary. It being in there is giving the Daughter permssion to have babies with the only male (it sounds like) in the aviary which is her father.....which is not a good thing. Maybe you should remove the nesting boxes to stop any fights, to stop the breeding with the father/ daughter thing and to let your birds get healthy again. It sounds like they are under some stress. Stress from fighting and breeding can bring on illnesses and it seems..... since the mother died that they are having problems. Try removing the boxes, and eggs, and getting the birds all back into good health with some good seed and vegies and if you must breed, try later when everyone is healthy and not with the related budgies. Thats all I can suggest. ***also...why is the spider allowed to stay there. It could be harmful. Spiders aren't a decorative item of a budgies cage. Edited December 2, 200618 yr by Bubbles
December 2, 200618 yr While you are waiting for them to get healthy, read up and find out as much as you can about budgies and breeding so that you can make properly informed decisions when you need to.
December 2, 200618 yr I agree with Sailorwolf here too. There's a lot to be learnt here, for the benefit of your birds.
December 2, 200618 yr I'm no expert, but I am curious to know, and please don't take this as me having a go at you, but why didn't you seperate them or do something when they were fighting so much, especially when you say they were endless battles??
December 2, 200618 yr Gently, oh so gently, why didn't you at least take out the injured bird and get him treatment for his damaged beak? Please please don't let the remaining birds breed. Please separate them and take away the nestbox. Get rid of the spider please before it bites one of your birds and give the cage a good cleaning. This is a great place to learn to be a great pet owner. Everyone here will be happy to help. Love, Shell
December 2, 200618 yr Hi bugie-girl You have done the right thing in coming here to ask for help.It shows that you care about your budgies, which is great. Do you know why Sunflower and Bellablue died? Maybe you should take your remaining budgies to an avian vet and get a checkup. Do you know if there is an avian vet near you? I noticed you are in WA. I know of avian vets in Murdoch, Applecross and Wattle Grove. There are a couple more in the metro area that I can't think of right now. If you need help locating one near you we can help you find one. This is a great site to find out so much about your birds. Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time here. Feathers
December 2, 200618 yr You've been given some great advice. I just want to stress how incredibly important it is that you have your remaining birds seen by a vet, especially the injured male. He may seem fine but beak injuries are very serious things for birds. There are a lot of nerves in that beak and the injury can cause it to grow in harmful ways which could eventually prevent him from eating. Just because he's able to eat now doesn't mean he will be later. Infection may occur and there are just way too many things that could go wrong if the injury isn't properly treated by an avian vet. I hope you understand that we just care about the birds and know you'd feel horrible if something happened to them too. If you have any questions about any of this, please don't hesitate to ask.
December 2, 200618 yr okay maybe I did sound a little harsh, but I was just genuinely wondering. as everyone has said this is a great place to get help, I am a fairly new member myself and have found this site and the people involved very friendly and helpful. I agree with what everyone has said in that it would be a great idea to have your birds checked out. Hope I didn't offend that was not my intention
