Calcium Deficiency

Hi guys , I took our 4 week old chick to avian vet 5 days ago because i thought that she Mia ,may have hurt her leg. :( She wouldn't put weight on it and seemed very sleepy. She was crawling on her belly. When I held her I found that her legs and upper body had no strength. She didn't grip at all with her claws. :) I was very worried! the vet said that it was a tipical case of calcium defiant. As he is very happy with there diet(fresh veg, fruit sprouted seed and pellets)and her mother has only been with us for 8 months, Dr Colin feels that Abby(the mother)had a bad diet before coming to us. All the chicks are getting liquied calcium now.

Mia has not improved the vet says it can take a week and then she should be doing all the normal things.

I cant find much info on this and would love some help. I am very sad and wonder if the vet missed some thing

She can fly beautifully and is now cracking seed. Look forward to any suggestions

:(

Do you have a cuttlefish bone and calcium and iodine block in their cage? If not you should go buy some as they are a good source of calcium, which is especially needed during breeding.

you can also shave the cuttlebone into the seed so they pick at it.

brocollii is a good source of calcium too

Keep us updated.

thanks guys , I have cuttlefish in the cage. I will try shaving it-thanks lovey. All my birds enjoy a wide range of veg including broccoli . I'll keep you updated and a keen eye on my posts. :(

Hi Ridley you can get calcivet at the pet store. Give the required dose 3 days a week for the next month. The other 4 days give plain water with 1 part to 100 of Apple cider vinagur.

Do as the others have said and have a Calcium Iodine Bell in the cage. Australian seed can be defecient in Iodine.
