Two little babies have hatched so far. They are sooooo cute. They have such tiny feet! One hatched on the 13th and one on the 15th of december and another is due tomorrow. Saffron is being a really good mum and feeding them well. they have full crops and are very active.

Sorry I haven't replied in a while. Another baby hatched two days after the first one however it died the next day. The older ones squashed it, I think. There haven't been any more babies since. The oldest two are getting their feathers and sofar they both look like yellowface blue spangles. Pretty. I hope the youngest one will be green. The older ones look like they may have splayed legs. Does anyone have any tips on remedying this problem?

I have a solution that worked for splayed legs...I posted it and photos in my budgie blog part one. I will do a search and find it for you to save me retyping. It has photos. You have to catch it early....under 2-3 weeks. :)

It best to catch this problem before the 3 week old stage but give it a try. I use a piece of flat makeup sponge ( rectangular in shape across the width ) ....cut two tiny holes or slits in it between half an inch apart or three quarters of an inch apart. Next is the difficult bit....you need two people. One to hold the budgie baby offering its legs and feet to go through the hole and one to make sure its feet and toes go through safely. Once you have both feet through the holes, push the section of sponge up past its "knees-ies" to the top section of leg. If too much excess sponge sticks out trim some back. I have used this method successfully already and a severely splayed baby was totally fixed. This enables the budgie to still get around in its box, doesnt tangle like some other methods may do. The only occasional problem can be rejection at times by the mother but most are fine with it. Make sure baby can still get up there to be fed and help it get closer to Mum to be fed if it is having trouble. Check the "splint" in a week...remove and see if legs are better. I usually at this time. if not quite right yet, re-do the split just a fraction closer in together for another week. By then it is usually fixed. pupssept173.jpgpupssept174.jpgpupssept175.jpg

Good luck.

This baby was severely leg splayed and now you wouldn't know anything was ever wrong with it ju06060.jpgnerwen052.jpg

************P.S.

Even thought the mother tosses out nesting material in the "egglaying stage" ....once all the babies arrive you can put it back in. Mother budgie is so busy with babies then that she leaves it there.

I can't wait to see pictures, I am glad the surviving ones are doing well.

Karen I just love the budgie butt it is so cute :D

Yes I was trying to get pictures today, but the camera kept stuffing up. :D

Actually I was looking at them today, and they don't seem to have splayed legs anymore. I think it was when I put them down on the ground they put their legs out, but today when they walked they kept their little legs underneath them. I'm going to keep an eye on them in any case. The younger baby looks darker than the older baby so the older baby may be a grey wing!!!!

good to hear :ausb:, hope that camera works soon :D

:D Excellent, hope the splayed leg problems are gone! :ausb:

No splayed leg problems at all. I really wish I could find that camera lead and then I could show you the babies. The middle baby looks like it has violet head bars. And the youngest baby has browny cinamen wings with what looks like violet head bars and some on its wings!!!. And they all look like saddle backs. Light feather markings at the top of the wing and dark at the bottom. :D !!!!. Otherwise they are yellowface2 blue spangles. :bluebudgie: I can't wait to see them fully coloured and feathered out.

Ohh I can't believe I missed all this! Congratulations on the Babies. Now get out there and bug all your friends for their camera, we wanna see.

I missed this post too! I've been following the other one! The babies sound interesting

Youngest baby might have some dilution too. I'll have a good look for that lead today.

I didn't think you could get budgies with violet head bars. They are so pretty. On the 2nd oldest the violet head bars give it an irridescent head. It is so cool.

Due to flat batteries I couldn't get many. But just got some, so hopefully all will go well.

Edit: Nope new batteries are flat too. :bluebudgie: I will have to wait til tomorrow while the batteries charge up.

Wow they all look stunning! I think that last one is going to be super cute

Wow, that first baby looks exactly like my Dekota did before she went through her first moult and turned green. They are really great looking babies. Well done.
