Posted November 14, 200618 yr Hi Last Sunday I got a new budgie. He is 3 months old and fairly tame. Sammi can sit on my finger and I can pat him and he wont bite, but I dont know if I can take him out of his cage yet. He's only been in it for 3 days. Should I wait until he's used to the cage before I take him out? Thanks in advance, Sammi
November 14, 200618 yr if he is comfortable with you taking him out of the cage now is okay. Each bird is different so if it was me and he was comfortable I would start taking him out now. If he is not clipped do it in a small room because he could start flying around crazyly if he is clipped it probably still a good idea as many birds can drop like a rock when clipped or soar a short distance.
November 14, 200618 yr are you quarantining Sammi away from your other birds? This is to prevent disease spreading just in case Sammi might be carrying something.
November 14, 200618 yr He may let you take him from his cage, that is great. If he flies straight back to his cage, that is great also, he is showing you that his cage is a place he feels safe in, or on. A good sign. As time goes on, he wil get more used to feeling secure away from his cage, dont force it, let him decide how far and how fast he wants to go.
November 15, 200618 yr Author Hi I am sort of quarantining him. What I have is I have a small cage that has a separator. I actually have 2 birds. They are both very young. I have them both in the cage but with the separator. Before I bought them both Sammi and my other bird are from the same aviary section in the shop. I dont have his wings clipped but I have a very small room (my bedroom) to let him out in. Is it okay that I have my 2 birds so close to each other and should I have soft things on the floor in case they have crash landings? Thanks Sammi
November 15, 200618 yr for quarentine they should be in completely separate rooms. If you bought them at the same time it would be okay to keep them together but at different times even if from the same place they need to be separated. Disease can come into an aviary at anytime. If you have them in a small room they shouldn't crash land especially if their wings are not clipped. If you have curtians rods up high you may want to use a room without them or have a long dowel perch ready to get them down because when it is a new place they tend to fly right up to the highest point even if they are tamed.
November 18, 200618 yr Author Hi; I had Sammi out of his cage today and he was GREAT!. We did it in the bathroom because it's not cluttered and messy like my room. I remembered to put the toilet seat cover down first so he didn't have an accidental swim.....(Laughing out loud)..... He didn't fly around silly or anything. He loves his cage and it took a bit of patience to get him to come out and when he did he just climbed around on the top of the cage. He got back onto my hand easily so I just held it in the cage doorway and let him decide what to do. He waited a few minutes then flew to his perch. I think it really helped having Tracy in the other half of the cage. I'll take him out again this evening and hopefully I'll remember to take a photo. Bye..... Sammi.
November 18, 200618 yr Sounds good. Read this post, it just gives tips on training. But if you find things are going well continue that way. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....topic=12568&hl=
