Posted October 12, 200618 yr Need help Usually everyday, unless its very hot i would bring my birds cage outside onto the patio? in a shady spot so they can feel the cool, fresh air, But my budgies would go have a snack every so often and drop seeds out of the cage and onto the floor :feedbirds: this attracts many other wild birds which i don't mind. but recently my neighbours cat caught a pigeon and........ so now i'm not sure what i should do. :greenb: my budgie's cage is about 1.5m of the ground Sometimes the cat climbs up the steps and sits right next to the cage watching my precious birds . If there are any mistakes please notify me
October 12, 200618 yr You should never leave the birds outside unsupervised. The short (and best) answer to the problem is to be there at all times if your birds are outside. Cats are only one of many dangers.
October 12, 200618 yr can you hang your birds cage? thats what i do, then no cat can come near. so you know too, i hook the cage to a cirlced eye hook type hook that is screwed in with about a 3 inch screw, so its not going anywhere, and i then have a "Karabeaner" type clip that looks like something a rock climber would use, but you can find them at homedepot type stores. theres no way the cage is coming down! i also ziptie the seed doors closed too, so they cant escape! that way i dont have to have my eye on them 24/7, i can garden too!
October 12, 200618 yr I agree with Terri never leave them alone and you won't have any issues if you want them to get fresh air putting them in the house next to a window not in direct sunlight is the safest option.
October 12, 200618 yr Even with the cage hung up and door secured, I wouldn't leave them outside alone. It's just not a good idea.
October 12, 200618 yr yep cats climb in fact when I cover the cage Maxx and Molli can be found snoozing on top - it is instinct (right or wrong) that is what cats do.
October 12, 200618 yr Even with the cage hung up and door secured, I wouldn't leave them outside alone. It's just not a good idea. cats can not walk on the underside of the patio roof! what are the other dangers that i am not thinking of?
October 12, 200618 yr no but then can climb up and on the cage...I guess it is a personal decision I am just over cautious . It doesn't feel secure unless I am around personally.
October 12, 200618 yr mine hangs about 3 inches from the roof so no cat can jump ontop when you have a secure cage, that is properly placed, there is no reason that you cant leave them outside unsepervised. What is the difference of that and a small aviary? that would get more cats, (Laughing out loud) Edited October 12, 200618 yr by Thirtyfive Black
October 12, 200618 yr not arguing but a cat can jump very high and if it gets its caws hooked on to the cage it could pull it down if not the shock could kill the bird hence its easier to deal with the cat
October 12, 200618 yr dont want to argue either, but as i originally stated, there is no way the cage is coming off the hook. and in my situation, if a cat were to come onto the patio, it would be too busy with the aviary to worry about a cage it cant get to. By The Way, they would have to get thru max my akita first! (Laughing out loud) people should not assume that they know better. When people ask for advice, they are usually asking all opinions. Just because one person does or doesnt do something does not mean it is the same for all. I am not about to put any of my birds in harms way, and ALWAYS make sure i have taken all needed precautions. they are my little angels, and my day would be incomplete without them!
October 12, 200618 yr (Laughing out loud), fortunatly, the cyottes take care of the outside cats in my neighborhood!
October 12, 200618 yr tsk tsk... we have 3 cats living in harmoney again your right everyone has a right to express their opinion and that person who asked for it can take everything and decide for themselves ...((truce)) - we have coyotes too that is why my cats are indoors and then again that is another debate in or out should that cat be? Now hath... - your point is well taken because I know my Molli could get one of those pesky budgies of mine if she had a chance. Edited October 12, 200618 yr by lovey

(Laughing out loud) lovey, so do i! fat lazy things! no debate from me on having dogs & cats inside with birds. that all comes down to responible owners, and propper training of the cat/dog. i cant beleive lovey that you have any pesky budgies!!!
October 13, 200618 yr well okay.... now i dont know what to do XD but my cage is firmly secured But the cat just sits there (i was told) woulndt it do someting? ...i just wont bring violet and ruby outside unsupervised... XD Edited October 13, 200618 yr by rageruner
October 13, 200618 yr Another danger in Australia can be from magpies and crows. They love trying to pull a budgie or any bird through the bars of a smallish cage. Take care
October 13, 200618 yr I leave my budgies unsupervised outside. I make sure the cage is securely taped up first so that no little budgies try to squeeze their way through seed bowl door. Anna yor right having a cage outside is no different to having an avairy. When I put my budgies outside I just put my cat inside. We live out in the whops so there aren't many cats around. My budgies just love talking to the swallows and fantails.
