October 11, 200618 yr Author some of this years babies(did this 1 work) Edited October 11, 200618 yr by daz
October 11, 200618 yr it did, he is far way hard to see but I see the crest - very handsome. Do they live as long as the "normal" budgie?
October 11, 200618 yr Author yes they live as long as "normal" budgies, there are 3 types of "crests" tufted,1/2 circle and full circle, each crest is capable of throwing any or all types of crests, and sometimes multiple crests, have even seen crests on the birds backs, these are called helicopters, but not very attractive in my opinion.
October 11, 200618 yr interesting what type of crest do you have? Can you explain how the crest gene comes into play?
October 11, 200618 yr Author i have all 3 types of crest,as i stated before, each crest can and will throw each and every type of crest, the crest gene is a complicated gene to explain, example, you can pair 2 crested birds and still get no crested babies, and yet you can pair a crested budgie to a budgie with no crest genes at all and get some crested babies,so as you can imagine, they are a great challenge with plenty of dissapointments but also plenty of surprises, i am still learning each and every day in my breeding programme with plenty of experimental breeding, trying to breed a stud of "crests" that actualy consistently throw good crested budgies.
October 11, 200618 yr They look so cool I don't think I can imagine the helicopter ones - it just sounds too funny Edited October 11, 200618 yr by Zebra
October 11, 200618 yr I don't like them they look as if they are sick. (the helicopter ones) Nice birds :hap: the fulls ones always make me thing someone put a bowl on their head and gave them a hair cut
October 12, 200618 yr Hey Banjo, I must confess I’m not a big fan of the crested variety, but when you are a budgie fan, you must thank human nature for the fact that we do not all like the same things! Where would blue budgies be if everyone only liked greens… Right?! Here is a link for those interested in some more info on the crested variety: Budgerigar Variety Bible And a picture I always find amusing, this is (I think) what you would call a “helicopter”, and he is a fallow too…. he looks possessed!! :hap: :hap:
October 12, 200618 yr Author LusoPeriquito, yes that is a "helicopter", and yes i agree, good thing everyone has different tastes or else we would all have plain green budgies and thats all, all the mutations that have been bred and resulted in the rainbow of colors and varieties we see today simply would not exist.
October 16, 200618 yr I would love to see more closeup pics if you can get any. I think the budgie in the first picture is pretty. Is it also an ino or DFS? or DEC?
October 18, 200618 yr Author its a DFS, will try for some closer photos soon, good to see some interest in the crests,i reckon they are great, but i am in the minority.
October 19, 200618 yr Banjo, Don’t mind us! We are probably too old fashioned anyway. :hap: Keep on loving and routing for the crested budgies, I’m sure that pretty soon more and more appreciators will arise. Don’t feel discouraged, by the contrary, keep on posting great pics of your crested budgies and prove us wrong, show everyone they are the greatest looking budgies that ever existed. :hap:

October 21, 200618 yr I couldn't help giggling at Sailorwolf's posts in this thread. My Dad had crested canaries, but I'd never seen a crested budgie until now. I think a helicopter variety would be nice in a different colour.
