How Many Budgies....

Featured Replies

Hi all...

I just have a question.....I got a new cage yesterday, which is much bigger than the last one. It measures 44cm deep, 76 cm wide, & 86 cm high. Trixie & Bobby are very happy with their new digs!!

My question is, how many budgies would fit comfortably in a cage this size? Should I just leave it for the 2 of them, or am I able to get another 1 or 2? I am having so much fun with these characters, I'm hooked! I'd love to get more....but obviously wouldn't if their home became too crowded. :P

In other people's experience, do you stay with even numbers? How do budgies go if there are 3 of them? Do you find they fight more 'cause one might be left out, or are they generally fine? So if 3 (being an odd number), is it better to get 4? Do you know what I mean? Or should I just be happy with what I've got, & forget about getting any more? :)

I took some more pics a half hour ago, so here they are....

Thanks for your help!!

very nice cage :P I'm not sure but I think another two could fit, only if they get some good out time.

Well that is twice the size of the cage Terri had her budgies in for a while and she had 4, so i would say 4 would be very comfortable. :D Just one thing. I would try to get rid of the dowel perches and replace them with natural branches. Gum tree branches are perfect, just clean them well first. Also have perches running more from front to back rather than side to side....that way they can fly from perch to perch better. :)

good points Bea :) I was just looking at the saze more than the cage layout (Laughing out loud).

Thanks guys....I appreciate all the advice! Do I just go get some branches straight off a tree? Or can you buy bird safe branches from pet shops?

The swing that Trixie is sitting on in the photo is one bought from a pet shop, & is made of natural wood. They love to peel the bark off it, & I find lots of shredded bark on the bottom of the cage. I was assured that it was bird safe by the pet shop before I bought it.

We have some old gum trees across the road, so I might go & have a look tomorrow. Should I rip one off the tree, or just pick old ones that have fallen to the ground?

Wow...when I read your replies, I thought they were straight forward...& then I started thinking! I was always told thinking was dangerous!! :):D Sorry for all the questions!!

Cheers,

Tracey

most natives are safe for budges and gums are good. If your getting it from a park or anywhere in the wild give them a good clean and leave in the sun to dry before putting in the cage. If it's just fallen they are fine to use, you can tell if the branch has been on the ground for a while.

What about Wattle tree branches? (Golden Wattle). They're native, aren't they? Are they safe??

And to clean them, do you just use water or something else as well?? I'm guessing you can't scrub the branches too hard....you'll get rid of all the bark...or is that what you want? Gee....I'm feeling a little thick tonight! :)

Cheers,

Tracey

Sorry guys...I just wanted to bump this to the top, to see if anyone can help with the 'tree branch' issue. I want to make sure I can give Bobby & Trixe the best, so want to make sure I get it right!

How do you 'clean' branches???

Thanks..... :)

Well, it's twice as tall as the cages I had but the rest is the same. I think four would be comfy there if they come out every day. :) When I had my budgies in the breeding cage, they were getting several hours of out time every day. I had to upgrade when I started working full time.

I scrub my branches with NappySan & then thoroughly rinse. For added protection boil the kettle & pour the boiled water over them & dry in the sun.

I use a vinegar and water mix. And then leave the branches in the sun untill they are completely dry. Don't throw away your doweling. Keep those perches and mix them in with natural perches. that way they also have variety. I find too that it is good to have more perches than the ones that are already in the cage, that way you can have spares and swap them around every week or so.

With regards to number of birds; I found that having 3 budgies, one would always be left out as the other two would pair up. Now that I have 4 budgies everyone is much happier.
