Posted July 28, 200618 yr My new baby Chip had quite a severe bleed this morning I covered the poor sweetheart in cornflour to stop wherever the bleeding was coming from - it was definitely a feather just couldn't make out which one it was with all the blood. Anyways a couple of hours later I cleaned him up and found a snapped blood feather. I havent as yet done anything about it as its a really thick one at the front of his wing and looks really painful if I pluck it. Will this grow out naturally if I do leave it or am I gonna have to yank it i dont want to hurt my baby. He is sooo calm though even after all the stress he did a perfect formed poop on me hehe. July 28, 200618 yr Your going to have to pull it BoomBooms. Karen's online, she will give you instructions on how to do it as soon as she sees this. (Karen, how about if we have a pinned article on this? Maybe you could do it with pics???)
July 28, 200618 yr Author Yep I thought so. Ive done it before with Barnslee but it just came out easily - this looks REALLY thick and could even be 2 seperate feathers I need to get a closer look. I dont mind doing it myself but I dont wanna cause him any pain and I dont want him knocking himself all the time and causing the bleeding again he lost enough blood today grrrr.
July 28, 200618 yr We had a similar topic and posting earlier today about this. You are going to have to pull the feather. It's best. Need two people, one to hold the bird firmly and support the wing. You need a pair of forceps or strong tweezers, pliers or whatever is clean and will do the job. Locate the feather and holding it close to where it grows from, pull it out. Making sure the wing is well supprted and held. Do it fast and then the usual smothering of cornflour etc. for stopping any bleeding. Better to get it over and done with or it'll aggravate the poor thing when it catches on stuff. It's easier than you think to do, and you will have another acchievment that makes you less fearful of the solution next time it happens. Cheers kaz
July 28, 200618 yr posted by Bubbles on from the Emergancy Post You can remove a broken blood feather yourself. You need someone to hold the bird and hold and support the wing. You need a strong pair of forceps, grip the feather close to where it grows from and pull it out..(taking great care to support the wing properly). You may need to apply some cornstarch (or cornflour) to the area if bleeding starts up again. Keep budgie warm so it doesn't go into shock. Good luck Booms.
July 28, 200618 yr Get Boomhubby to hold him and support the wing Booms! He will just keep knocking it and it will bleed. Hopefully Karen can set up a post with pics to help people do this - I am too much of a wooser to do it! Gosh, I am a terrible bird owner - I won't even clip their toenails!
July 28, 200618 yr Author Yeah like I said I did it with one of my tiels when she half plucked it herself but I did it by hand and it easily came out. This looks really thick. But I guess if its gotta come out then it has. I will invest in a new clean pair of tweezers on my way home. Will it come out as easily as Barnslees or not I dont wanna be yanking on it for ages. I will update on Monday and hopefully have piccies of my big show budgie boy. Hopefully a little less red hehe.

The feathers do seem to come out easily, just pull in the same direction and angle of the growth........and forceps seem better than tweezers for the job ...........Cheers kaz Edited July 28, 200618 yr by Bubbles
July 28, 200618 yr here is an article on it too http://www.cockatieltweets.com/articles.ht...0BLOOD-FEATHERS
July 28, 200618 yr Author Thank Karen although I have no forceps and have no idea where to get them from this late in the day - the tweezers will have to do. Boomhubby has pliers if that fails. My poor baby Chip - he is a big boy and totally tame so shouldnt be as hard as giving syringe meds to my wild Heidi and he probably wont scream the house down either hehe.
July 28, 200618 yr Your neighbours must think you torture those poor birds sometimes Booms :fear :fear
July 28, 200618 yr Author Hehe oh Heidi is a drama queen and screams if someone sits within a metre of her hehe. Beano was even worse god rest his soul. My little Chip is an angel and doesnt make a fuss so I think we will be sorted pretty quickly I just hope it doesnt hurt him I dont want him to lose his trust. All the other budgies have hehe.
