Did The Vet Kill My Budgie?

Featured Replies

i just took monty to the vets to get his shot for mites.. she was fairly rough with him because he wouldnt be caught and so she jabbed him real quick and he didnt want to put his wing down. Then i'd have left him alone in the kitchen to settle down and brought him in last night and he was all drunk and wobbling and was on his top perch and his head was below the perch and he couldnt stay awake

we rang the 24 hour vet we went to and they said let him jsut rest and see if he eats anything and then call in the morning and i got up this morning and he was dead in the bottom of his cage.

They killed my budgie huh?

They said there were no side effects to the jab so...

Oh my gosh, what a horrible thing to wake up to. I am so sorry.

I think I would call the vet back and ask to discuss it, although I imagine you are very distraught right now. Was there any reason to think he was sick before? Are bird mites common where you are?

Not that it would make a difference now (hugs on your loss :rip:)

Did you go to an avian vet?

When did you find out he had mites and how? I ask because you were just trying to find rehome him and you didn't mention mites in your ad.

Do you know the exact site of the injection? Like where did she jab him?

Asking the questions because it is hard to blame someone first until you have more details and answers.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss...total hugs

We hadnt taken him to an avian vet because there dont seem to be any around here. We had been giving him an injection for mites because he had been chewing his toenails and going a litle crazy but we had put the going a little crazy down to the fact he didnt liek being in his cage and wanted more room.

As soon as we gave him his injection within days he seemed much better and so altho i was selling him i had scrubbed down all his stuff and like i said, we were giving him another jab so he would be perfectly safe before he went anywhere. PLus like i said we werent even positive it was that but it did seem to help.

Yesterday tho he seemed fine in the morning and was his happy little self and now he is lying cold and still in the bottom of his cage and till i dig up the courage to bury him.

I jsut think she jabbed him wrong as she did it very fast because he kept biting her and it looked a lot lower than the last one done by the bird specialist at that particular vet.

Then straight after like i said, he was holding his wing up as if he was sore and when i asked her she jsut said it was because his feathers were ruffled from jumping around too much.

By The Way if he did have mites it came from Pet City in Hamilton and i'm angry as *** at them for selling me a budgie with mites and one who was meant to be 4 months old who turned out to be MUCH older.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. :rip:

It is definitely possible that the injection killed your budgie. I would be more suspicious about the dosage being wrong rather than the injection being given incorrectly (though it does sound like she was rough, I don't think that would have killed the bird).

What medication did she use? Was it Ivermectin? Did she even say? Were there any other symptoms beside him chewing his nails?

It's impossible to know if this was the vet's fault or if the budgie just had underlying issues from the beginning without having had a thorough necropsy performed. For now, I would continue looking for an avian vet and let the anger at this vet go. After all, it may not have been their fault. It's very hard for a vet to treat birds if they haven't had much experience doing so, even an avian vet. This is one of the saddest aspects to owning a bird, especially a tiny budgie. At least you did your best, the vet tried, it just had a very sad ending, unfortunately.

If you and the vet are fairly certain that mites were the issues, let the pet store know about the entire ordeal. Either way, it would be a good idea to tell them. They probably won't care, but you never know.

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. I've had quite a few myself lately and I can empathize completely.

Yea its a shame i dont have my receipt to proove i'd bought a bird from them but i think i'm going to get my husband to contact the pet store and give them a full run down and tell them how unhappy we are about hte whoel thing.

Or maybe i should write them a letter. I've found in the past that if you are really nice about things and just say how dissapointed you are in something that ppl see to care more and are more willing to compensate you.

Anyway we'll see. I'm jsut sad whatever caused it lost me my little man.

Rest in Peace my beautiful feathered friend. Fly where the air is warm and food plentiful. Know you are loved and that you will be in our hearts forever. Sweet Dreams in your eternal Slumber

:( I agree with e-terri completely, we will never really know what happened without a necropsy. I once had one of my rescues, Freddy, in for a beak trim and he had a heart attack and died there but he had underlying issues. Do let the pet store know what happened (in a few days as I know you are still very upset and I totally understand this) and followup with the vet as well. You are obviously a very loving and caring person and would do well with a rescue bird but if you want a baby, that's great, you can get another one from a different place. Best of Luck. :rip:
  • 3 weeks later...

Mites is pretty common and alot of petshops have them. My Isis had them. I successfully treated her with mite solution and she is fine now.

There are several different places you can inject an animal. It is not always in the same place. A dog for instance has three very good places for injections. Also injecting in exactly the same place does not work as well, because of scar tissue build up.
