I am not sure how to put pics on for all to see but if some one could give me a step by step dummy guide it may help. from all the pics i have seen i would say they were in top condition for breeding and their leg rings tell me they are old enough. their nesting boxes are sitting on the floor of the breeding cage. i have different size and shape perches in the cages like timber, sticks and plastic. only the light from inside my house, not much i guess.
July 3, 200618 yr Okay......... 1. If there's not enough light conditions they wont feel like breeding. 2. there has to be at least one good sturdy "bonking" perch that they can "do the deed on".....of a decent diameter that the female can get a good grip onto. Other perches too of course for hopping about. 3. If your nesting box is inside the cage, it may not leave enough room for the displays of mating behaviour where they hop from perch to perch showing off to each other. 4. Best to move the nesting box to the outside ( with a hatch door of your cage raised ) to the hole of the nesting box and raise the box higher than floor level. Declutter their area a bit. 5. If the nesting box entry isn't private enough they won't like it much. Position it so the entry is private. 6. A lot of budgies like the aviary conditions to bring on mating instincts....or at least aviary sounds. Some just wont breed in breeder boxes. If all else fails......soft romantic music, a bottle of wine and a good dinner ..............for you
July 3, 200618 yr I would take them out for a week Ros. Then reset them. Here is my set up if it helps. I put them in for 21 days. If no eggs they are put back in the flight for a week and then reset. Sometimes in works, some times it doesn't.
July 3, 200618 yr You've also got to make sure that light isn't shining directly into the nest box. Hens prefer total darkness
July 3, 200618 yr "there has to be at least one good sturdy "bonking" perch that they can "do the deed on".....of a decent diameter that the female can get a good grip onto." Not a nice visual...makes me want to stick my fingers in my ears & go "la la la la la....can't hear you.....la la la la" :(Laughing out loud): Makes you realise how lucky we are that we don't have to 'do the deed' on a perch!!! "If all else fails......soft romantic music, a bottle of wine and a good dinner ..............for you" I had a real 'chuckle' moment at these comments! Thanks Karen..... Cheers, Tracey
