Are They Ready?

Featured Replies

Just by looking at the pictures, are they ready? I have them in the breeding cage with the nest box, mineral/calcium block, cuddle bone, and well balanced diet. What else do I need to add or do? They are both atleast 2 years old.

Are you sure they're that old? The female looks like she's between 6-8 months http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_age.html

From what other members of this forum and other forums have told me and according to this site ABS - Bands she was born in 2004 just like Loverboy, the band around her leg is GOLD

The next thing to do is to have patience. I would leave them in the breeding cage for 21 days and if no eggs take them out or remove the nest box.

Leave the nest box out for a week to two weeks and then retry for 21 days.

There is no garrentee that she will breed. She may not like the male or the surroundings. He may not like her that much.

I have a male that I was given because he wouldn't breed for the previous breeder.

He has now fathered two chicks for me.

Just have patience and see what happens. Could you take a photo of the Breeding cage for us to see.

Make sure the photo is maximum of 450 x 450. Anything larger and it slows the board down for those that are on Dial up.

Here is a picture of the cage, well the link anyways, couldn't get it any smaller. I am going to secure the nesting box this evening as soon as I find a larger nut that won't go threw the cage bars.

Thats great CherokeesBudgies, I would rearange the breeding cage to start with. Place the nest box high up in the corner or on the Side closest to you. (Front side) I would take out that perch that runs across the length of the cage and put two or three running from front to back.

Budgies like the nest box to be dark. A hole facing everyone is not always prefered.

A nest box high in a cage give the sense of more security.

Perches running length ways stops the mating ritual of "Chasing" from one perch to another.

Here is one of my set ups.

The nest can be inside or out. I prefer outside because it give more room for the Budgies.

I hope this helps

Ive got good idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since there are two smaller doors, hang the nest box outside of the cage! If the whole is to wide, use a peice of wire mesh to fill in the gap(s)... That way, its high up, theres more room inside, and since your box opens from the top, it will be easier to see eggs/babies :) I think its worth a try. Other than that, give them time, and youll have babies soon. I also agree. Use 2-3 perches front to back, so they can move around more, and its more practical for a breeding setup :D Best of luck

The doors open from the top, cagedoor.jpg they don't hang down so putting the box outside the cage would be almost impossible , and as far as the perches, the perches that cam with the cage are only 15 in. long and the cage is 18 in. wide :D I can move the box to the front over in front of one of the doors, and just do away with 2 of the feed dishes. Just need to figure out how to secure it, so I will still bebale to get inside the nesting box if need be. Any ideas? It is a new cage and I don't want to cut it.

okay, tell me if this is better, I secured it with a bolt and nut, then doubles secured it with a wire from the outside, best i could do considering I didn't want to cut the new cage. I also took out 2 of the perches, as I explained in my earlier post my perches are not long enough to go from side to side, so i have to put them in at an angle.

Hmmm... its better than before... but....((Laughing out loud))...

Thats good that the doors open upwards.... And you are still able to attach the box on the outside. Can you please give us the dimensions of the box, and the dimensions of the doors. Also, the perches at an agle wont work for mating. They need to be as long as possible, and be able to have enough room for the hens tail when she raises it, then enough room for their heads. What i would recomend is use natural branches, or go out and get new perches. I know for a fac that perches come in 19" which would work out fine, but im pretty sure there is also 18". So, can you give us the dimenions of the objects i asked for earlier, get new perches, and then you will be good to go! Your doing a great job, and i love how you want them to breed just as much as i want mine to, so your doing anything possible to increase the chances of fertile eggs :) Best of luck Cherokee! And have they showed attention to one another yet? Or...

ps-im looking for another cage, one exactly like yours, but i dont know if i want a breeder kind. What was the dealer off of ebay you got it from, how much was shipping to your house, do they deliver to Canada, and was their business good? Im looking into one 30 x 18 x 18 . . . which is yours, but youve got the dividable kind...which i might look into i guess  Thanks!

I am going out to the store this afternoon, so I will look for some 18 or 19 inch perches. The box is 7 in tall x 7 in deep x 6 wide in front.

nestingbox1.jpg

They show each other attention sometimes, but not always.

With the door open, it measures 7 in. wide x 7 1/2 in tall

cagedoor-1.jpg

But my problem with putting the box outside of the cage is I have no way of supporting the box, meaning to hold the box up and to hold it in place.

I paid $0.01 for the cage and paid $34.94 for shipping so the cage cost me a total of $34.95. This is who I got the cage from Demonds-Pet-Depot I am not sure if they ship to Canada or not. I just emailed him asking if they ship there or not because it does not state on his site if they do or don't, if I hear back from him, I will let you know.

That looks good. I would probibly put a small box under the nest box to lift it up a bit more. But the way you have it should work.

If I lift it any higher I won't beable to get the top open, I can't get the top all the way open now with it like it is.

Just keep your fingers crossed now that they do something (Laughing out loud)

(Laughing out loud)... what a struggle eh guys?!?!?! (Laughing out loud)

Hmm.. i think that door is perfect for it then! :hap: What you can do is drill two holes on the nest box, in the upper front corners... Then, get a twist tie, and attach one long enough to link together in the box, to go out each new hole you drilled, and to go through the door, and tie them to the top of the cage ;) It may sound dangerous, but i did somehting like that, and mines 150% secure! More secure than if i even attached it to the side of the cage with the hooks it came with. Id say try it out. Unfortuantely, i dont have any pics of mine though, and i took the box out now, so i cant take new ones, i will when i add them again, around mid august though :hap:

THANKS ABOUT DESMONDS PET DEPOT! :D :D :D Thats so nice of you! Im in Guelph Ontario Canada ( N1E 7L7 ) . . . I hope they do ship! If so, ill get one....probably ;) (Laughing out loud)

Personally I would attach the hesting box outside the cage. You can use lengths of wire to wrap around the nesting box and wire it onto the cage....any gaps can be taken up with adding a piece of wood or something. At least your access to the nesting box and babies would be easier if it was externally fitted....makes life easier. If it is too heavy and makes the cage uneasy, then just prop it using anything to help keep the balance after you have wired it on. You don't have to buy rready made perches either. Either get some dowel wood from the hardware store and cut your own or find some safe branches to use.

You can use poplar tree branches, eucalyptus and and apple tree branches safely. You just need to wash them before you put them in the cage. Natural perches are great as the bark is good for their feet, they come in different diameters and it gives them something fun to chew on.

okay. I would say:

Put the cage on a larger table. Wire your cage door open. You can use any kind of steel wire (not zip ties: -> poisonous) or you can use pegs. Hang the nest box on the outside of your cage, using some more steel wire. Then (now that you have a larger table), you can put a box or something underneath the nest box (which is on the outside of the cage) to give it extra support. That way the nest box entrance is not facing you or the light and you can access the inside of the nest box easily for monitoring.

Ps. Kirby did you mean 16mm not inches, when you were describing the perch diameters? Cause 16 inches would probably be a perch suitable for a moa. :(

You would have to explain Moa to him Sailorwolf.

Basically the tallest (biggest) bird to ever exist. 3-4m high. Over 10 to 13ft. And that eagle in the picture was big enough to carry them off too. That eagle even carried away children (true fact)!

If you click on the link "Moa" to that it shows you how big they are compared to Richard Owen.

HAHAHAHAHA GUYS!!!

I meant like 16" long! (Laughing out loud).. not wide! (Laughing out loud)

Ive heard of that bird before... freaky eh!?!?!? (Laughing out loud)

Bad news, Passion was going out of breeding season :ausb: her cere is now turning beige. But good news Casper is going back into breeding season :) I have put Passion in the cage with Jasper and I have put Casper in the breeding cage with Loverboy. Casper is showing more attention towards Loverboy then she did before, so maybe magic may may happen between these 2.
