Introducing Myself And My Birdies

I am new to posting here but not new to reading and admiring the lovely birds. I lost my little Oliver a couple years ago. He lived with us for 11 years. I spent the last day, all day with him. His feathers were unclipped all his life and he loved to zoom through the house and especially to buzz our dog, which drove the dog nuts. But at the end of that last day, his funeral pyre set his spirit truly free to soar in the heavens like all little birdies should. I loved him so much. So it has taken two years to want to get another budgie, but I have arrived, in a mad rush I might add.

I now have two english budgies that I bought on impulse over the past couple weeks. Shelby who is a dark grey normal,is quite timid and while he steps up quite readily and doesn't take off at every oportunity, he still does the littly gaspy thing intermittently. Max is a cobalt normal, and seems a bit bolder and more inclined to investigate things a bit even though I have only had him for a couple weeks. As I have only had them for about three weeks, it is hard to know what their personalities will be like when they are more comfortable here. They are still pretty quiet and reluctant to draw attention to themselves.

As well, they have a couple neighbours, two little zebra finches named Basil and Peach. Basil and Peach are both 7 years old, which I believe is actually very old. They were my daughters, but then she started dating and a year later got married and as is usually the case, I am the beneficiary. Not that I mind because they are pretty sweet even though they are both starting to have some motor problems.

Anyway, besides, me and my husband, two dogs and two horses, that is my family, and we're all pleased to meet you folks, sort of.

Pleased to met you ;)

Do you have pics of your budgies, we love to see them here.

Here we have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 birds, 4 hermit crabs, fish and kids :) a household here too but love it.

Hey welcome to the forum,

Looking forward to getting to know you and your birdies better ;) We have a whole house full of different animals here :)

It is nice to meet you. I would like to put a picture of my two boys on, but I am technically feeble and so must wait for my husband to take their picture and help me post it here. I am next in line to his motorcycle (I hope!) but as soon as possible I promise.

I have only had them for two weeks and I try to do my housework with them riding around on my shoulder as much as possible. They are great about staying there but I am not sure if it is because they are English budgies or are they just petrified with fear. Our little Oliver was an American budgie and while I have heard that English budgies are more laid back, I really havent been able to find any more info on temperment, so whether this is normal or not, I don't know. If it is, then English budgies are a snap to tame because these guys are four months old, came right out of a breeders flock the day I got them and they were stepping up within a couple days. I gave them a couple days to just chill and observe and then started working with them.

Oliver was barely out of the nest when I got him and he came from a very small breeder who was a retired man and had lots of time to handle him for me before we got him, so he was tame from day one.

Anyway, enough on us for now. Later....

:) Hi Debby, nice to meet you, I live on the Langley/Surrey border so we are almost neighbours! Haven't been on this forum a lot lately as I and a few others are having connection problems which are being worked upon. You sure will learn a lot and see a lot of great pictures. Enjoy! :(;) (p.s. and stay cool, it's already a scorcher today! "

Welcome! Nice to see another Canadian on the boards. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your birds soon. I have 12 (as you can see in my siggy). Most aren't very tame, but all are very enjoyable.

Merlin in my siggy is an English and he is more like a gentle giant I would call him, laid back, nothing ruffles his feathers as much, Pretty is an American and flightly and nuts (Laughing out loud). Together they compliment each other big time.

Eureka! or should I say, thank goodness he finally got his motorcycle on the road because now Don has helped me get some nice pictures of my bird family or at least part of it.

The grey bird is Shelby. He is four months old and is the shyer of the two. He comes onto my finger very easily, and will even come over to my hand if he has flown down to the floor unexpectedly and is feeling lost. But stroking his back makes him very nervous and face rubs are out of the question.

Max (or "The Blue Max" very interesting story regarding the origins of this aviation award first given in the first world war by the way), is also four months old. He is a much bolder bird and more willing to leap off my hand into the great unknown. He doesn't mind stroking on his back, occassionally likes a friendly face rub and has, on a couple occasions, snuggled down in my cupped hands. He also will come over to my finger on his own if he has gotten stuck down on the floor.

I've only had them for about two weeks and they are still quiet for the most part and not exploring their cage much yet. But they have hollered a couple times, and as best my memory serves me, they do seem to have bigger voices then American budgies.

Because their cage is large and hard to get a good dark cover over it for night, I have tuck them into a tiny bedtime cage with a towel draped over it . They reminded me the other morning just how small our little apartment really is the other morning, at 5:00 am, so that is when the bedroom cage idea was born. Better for them too as we like to watch tv in the evening so this way, they have more peace and quiet in the other room. So these are my boys, who are charming me to pieces so far.

you are obviously totally besotted, which is lovely! I'm so glad you are able to enjoy your new budgies as much as you obviously enjoyed your previous one. the pictures are great!

Max looks just like my budgie. they look a bit older than four months though... when i got my Casper he was a few months old and still had his stripes on his forehead... but I'm far from an expert so I'll leave any further speculations on that to those who are!.

It's fantastic that they are so keen to step up and stuff... it took me months of patience with casper before he even let me put my hand in his cage! now he comes out, sit on my finger and shoulder, but will only tolerate a thumb scratch on the tummy if he's in the right mood. He has become a lot more vocal over the last couple of months though... his repetoire now includes a wolf whistle, varying versions of "hello" and the "wotcher" of "wotcher doin?". I have also recently discovered he has a particular tweet for when the cats are near by (their food bowls are next to his table), which is hilarious cos its really high pitched and obviously hurts the cats' ears!

heloooo and welcome :) aww your budgies look and sound so cute...shelby looks just like my charlie :D:P

Just curious but I have a question. What does the "warn 0%" notation on the bottom of my posts mean? I haven't noticed it on anyone elses.

if you do something magor to break or bend the rules the admin and mod can put a warn mark on your account. Only you can see yours and the staff, no one else.
