l know that when you breed your budgies they should be at least 12 months old , l was wondering if you don't know how exactly how old your bird is how can you tell how old they are ? what can l look for to determine how approximately old they are ?

You really can't after there first or second moult. The only real way is to ask the breeder when you get them and hope he is truthful in his answer.

this is why you should only buy a bird that is closed rung so you are sure of the age

Hath is right. You need also to know how to discipher the ring.

In Australia 2006 is a gold colour. My rings are PR>6 377

PR = Pine Rivers Budgeriger Society

>6 = 2006 year of hatching.

377 = the number of the bird.

Some rings are different. They have the breeders code on them.

eg BNS 10G 282/03

BNS = Brisbane North Budgerigar Society

10G = Henry George (Breeder)

282 = Number of the bird

03 = 2003 year of hatching

If you buy a bird with a coded ring you can go to your local Budgerigar Breeders Association, tell them the ring code and they should left you know who bred the bird. From that you could find out from that breeder a lot about the bird.

I would say if they have a coloured cere already, wait another 9 months to be on the safe side. If they are baby like still, (baby coloured cere, bars, no iris ring) wait about 11 months. This should give you a safe amount of time.
