Posted June 15, 200619 yr Today my family and I stopped by the local SPCA to look at the dogs for adoption (were considering adopting a streetdog, and we will be returning there to see it again). The first thing I saw were the birds. There was a beautiful Cockatiel that my dad really liked. And there were 2 doves and a little green colored budgie. And I ended up taking it home, along with its cage. I cleaned everything up because it was messy and I misted him because I doubt he had ever had a bath in his life. I'm not sure if it's a male or female. I think it's just a normal green color, but I'm pretty bad with all that so I could be wrong. His beak is overgrown, so I'll have to go to the vet for that, same goes for his nails. I hope he likes his new home. I'm so incredibly happy to have saved him and hopefully I can take others in, in the future. Edited June 15, 200619 yr by standbyme
June 15, 200619 yr Your budgie is lovely.....he is lucky to have you too. Please be careful of that cage ...it shows rust inside and birds can die from heavy metal poisoning. If you get some steel wool and rub all the metal surfaces with it it should take off the surface rust....then lightly wipe down with a cloth with some olive oil on it to further protect the cage. Have fun with your lovely budgie.........cheers Karen
June 15, 200619 yr that was a real nice thing to do , l'm sure that your new budgie will love its new home with you
June 15, 200619 yr That was a wonderful thing for you to do. If only he could talk and tell you what sort of life he has had. He is a beautiful colour and I'm sure you'll take great care of him/her. He's one lucky budgie!! Hey, that's a good name - Lucky!!

June 15, 200619 yr that is awesome what did you name her (is what I will say from the pictures but the flash could wash out the cere) So if you can take a better picture without flash of the cere that would help. One more tip about that cage: round cages are not best because it doesn't give a bird anyplace to be secure I have heard this number of times from older time members here and the spacing on that cage looks too big more for a tiel. So in anycase, if you can I would get a new cage . Great job!!

The cage isn't round, maybe the picture makes it seem like it, but it's rectangular. Also the bar spacing is the same as all my other cages for my budgies, again maybe it's the pictures and the angle I took them at.
June 15, 200619 yr Thank you for rescuing him. I'm sure life will be much better for him now that he is with you. I have a female that looks very similar but has clear flight feathers. Have you added cuttlebone and a mineral block. That will likely help out with the beak. A calcium perch should help out with the nails too.
June 15, 200619 yr I think that the budgie is a female. She's really cute.. congratulations on the rescue.

There was a mineral block that came with the cage, but I'll be buying a new one along with a cuttlebone. Thanks for the tips!

June 17, 200619 yr Well done and congratulations. I'm sure she will be much happier now. thanks she's pretty feisty! Your lovely green budgie is also an opaline
June 17, 200619 yr Yes I would say girl. I think she is also a dominant pied int he first picture. So a female, light green opaline dominant pied.
June 17, 200619 yr Author Yes I would say girl. I think she is also a dominant pied int he first picture. So a female, light green opaline dominant pied. dominant pied has a pied spot on the back of the head no? I checked her just now and it doesn't look like she has a spot. unless i'm mistaken about what dominant pied is.
June 17, 200619 yr Well she has pied spots of yellow on her side doesn't she? All budgies with a spot are dominant pied, but not all dominant pieds have a spot.
