What Does This Mean....

What does it mean when a Budgie is standing on a branch and starts to flap it's wings very fast...and keeps doing it for a while but doesn't move anywhere. Mine do it and it seems to excite the other one into fast flying around the aviary like a mad thing. Any ideas? Thanks :)

mine do it too especially my younger one Merlin

If they are young I believe they are exercising their wings and getting ready to learn how to fly better and for balance if they are older just exercising and stretching.

Mine are still young, so they flap their wings a lot. They both do it one at a time while on a perch or if they are outside their cage. I agree about what the last post said. They are exercising their wings and getting ready to learn how to fly better. I love watching them do that, it's so neat!

mine used to do that while he was moulting, I think it was both to get rid of loose feathers and also to watch the feathers in the bottom of his cage flutter about.

yer my charlie used to do it but i dont se him do it anymore (Laughing out loud) :)

That would make sense as they are moulting at the moment...feathers everywhere. Thanks :)

mine is doing the same thing and she is going through her first moult too...

They do it just for fun too. Arkady will flap really hard out while holding onto his perch and then he'll suddenly let go and go swirling up to the top of the cage really fast.

my eldest (4) does it too altho he seems annoyed when he does it and he does it and does it until he suddenly seems satisfied. I think in his case cause i'm guessing he is starting to mault that hes got some loose feathers that wont come off properly. He only does it sometimes but my other budgie in te next cage gets riled by it too.

I love it when they do that! Especially when they yell & scream at the same time as if to say "Hey look at Meeee!!".

Blossom loves to do that too, only when she does all that flapping, she usually angles herself so she is facing perpindicular or slightly downwards to the perch, and sometimes she flaps while she's almost completely upside down! What a funny girl.
