Posted June 11, 200618 yr Hi guys, hope you can help in one of my breeding cabnets I've 2 lovely nice size babies. They are about 6 weeks old, however the lovely grey one is so huge (much bigger than the parents and the are large birds themselves) that it can't sit on the perches it does walk around the bottom of the breeding cabnet but does lay down alot. It is a magnifgent bird but I'm worried for its health. Cheers people
June 12, 200618 yr i would say you should take it to an avian vet. if it cant perch, its safe to say it wont be able to fly???

June 13, 200618 yr I can remember about 10 years ago I had some chicks hatch with the same problem. They were huge!! They werent able to fly and sadly didnt live very long. I dont know what the problem was but I just remember they were unusually big.
June 22, 200618 yr Paul No photo of youngster, so......are the feathers a lot longer than normal, parents still having to feed it and makes a sound different from the other chick? If so probably what is called a "feather duster", usually short lived and feathers grow quickly and start to curl. Keeping it alive it not really a kindness if it is one as they normally fail to feed themselves when the parents get tired of feeding it and starve to death, the feather growth rate demands a huge supply of food which the chick fails to take in. bliss3bliss

She does seem to be feeding herself, not a fast eater but I have also seen the dad feed her she doesn't swark but the dad corners her and feed at times. Thanks bliss3bliss for your feedback. Cheers
