June 14, 200618 yr Everyone has a different idea of what a problem is. I would not say breeding is problem free at all. Saying...."quote...there dont seem to be many problems " is a very naive attitude. Every choice you make has consequences that can affect the lives of your birds. I am sorry if this has caused offence, I dont consider myself naive. I dont go into anything blindly, I never have in any walk of life. I have horses and am well aware how a small thing can upset a very delicate balance. (if something goes wrong with horses, it really goes wrong!) (I read on the internet last night that bamboo was okay for budgies, but was still a bit worried to put it in until I had asked someone form this site! that is how cautious I am) I fully intend to make sure that I know everything i possibly can before i even think of introducing a nest box to my budgies. I dont think that I chose my words carefully enough, what I meant was from all of the articles and books that I have read, they discuss the problems that you have raised and more besides, but there does not seem to be any clear cut does and donts. Only that this may happen, and that may happen.

Only that this may happen, and that may happen. You have not caused offence. It's just that some books don't tell you all the pitfalls thats all. I guess thats why there are a lot of people putting nesting boxes in little cages for their two budgies. There a re a lot of do's and dont's....too many to write about. I can advise you at any time as what I have learnt from mine could fill a book. Happy to help you with anything, anytime. Just ask lots of questions and try not to go just from books. A lot of the budgie books are older printing too, so things might have chaged a little here and there. A lot depends on if you breed colony breeding or breeding box style. I do both, but colony breeding is only sucessful depending on the birds personalities and how carefully you watch the aviary relationships to fix potential problems. You can pm me with any questions as they arise............cheers Karen
June 15, 200618 yr WOW! I cant belive i missed Goldie! Shes STUNNING KAREN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such a doll! She looks kinda like a male though (Laughing out loud) to me anyways... Kirby

June 15, 200618 yr My goodness, isn't she a pretty little lady!! Love her colouring!! is that like dark blueish colour on her chest feathers?!?! so cute!
June 15, 200618 yr Author All the others from Swifts nest were flying about and exploring today. Goldie just sat and looked about, preened herself, sunned herself and sat some more. No flying just ropewalking. I popped her/him back in the nest for the night as it is 3 degrees centigrade tonight and there was a lone sibling left in the nest to keep warm. Cheeta....she is all yellow, but you saw and I see a very faint hue or tint of colour under the yellow. Unusual.
June 15, 200618 yr Karen, Goldie is simply brilliant. The DFS (or DEC) that I saw at a shop once was much darker yellow. She looks almost like a creamino. Are you planning on breeding her parents again? It would be awesome if you could get another like her. Edited June 15, 200618 yr by Shawna
June 15, 200618 yr Ive been drilling that into Karens head Shawna She says the parents are thinking of another brood, and she may let them :) Kirby

Are you planning on breeding her parents again? It would be awesome if you could get another like her. The DEC I saw in a birdie place was darker too. But she is a double factor spangle and I am not sure about them. She is a lovely paler yellow. As parents and in particular Mum bird is well and looks good I may let them go with round two of breeding, then a holiday for her in another aviary away from boys. I have other babies in other nests that could produce a DFS too. Time will tell. I have a few opalines coming out soon, some violet opalines (Cheeta ??) and some more spangles growing up in the nesting boxes. The two that I thought had french moult are now feathering up as normal and are both violets I think or at least one and a cobalt maybe.
June 16, 200618 yr Godlie, looks much lighter in colouring than my yellow DFS. I think goldie cood be a yellowface or dilute?? Yes I have noticed that DFS seem to have a small amout of colour show around their neck. My saffron has a faint line of olive colour around her neck. About your French moult babies. Can they fly? If they can't, can i ask you a favour? Will you give them flying lessons? Because I think perhaps that if they start to have lessons at a young age they may be able to regain flight and I think that would be a record break through if you managed to accomplish that.

I guess time will tell with Goldie re colour, but to all appearances she is pale gold. The french moult babies seem now to be feathering up well enough. They are still not ready to fledge but I will pay particular attention to that time and yes will try and give them flying lessons if they need it. I think I have enough runway and all I need now is a large set of wings in my size ........but, seriously...yes I will. I will photograph them this weekend along with other beautiful babies and post. The spangle babies and the green baby are cracking seed. Goldie is now flying around the aviary too.
