Posted June 10, 200618 yr Hi i posted this question yesterday in mutations, varieties and genetics. I would love to get into breeding show variety budgies, i have a baby budgie at the moment, her father was a grey show bird (unsure of type) and the mother was a normal size (green and yellow normal i thinks) so i am wondering if i get a show variety partner for my bird what are the chances of getting show size babies??? Also while i am here i love blues and would love a variety of greys, violets, cobalts and sky blues. i'm not quiet sure yet if Olly is a boy or girl i think s/he may be a green grey clearwing??? S/he has a grey green belly, bright sky blue cheek patches (could be violet??), dark eyes no iris, clear yellow 'v' patch as well as yellow wings down near the bottom of wings they have black edges, but up top her wings are clear yellow. I've spotted a very pretty cobalt show bird i think either spangle or opaline (can't quite remember) if i got him what roughly would i get, or what should i get to get a variety of blues??? Remeber i'm only starting i won't be breeding until next year but i want to start my collection of breeding pairs, i've still got heaps to learn but thats why i'm here. :feedbirds: edited to add Olly isn't show size but shes not dainty either.... June 10, 200618 yr Hi Pecker. Where abouts in Australia are you? The best recomendation is to join a Budgerigar Society. The members will help you start and give you access to Show Birds. You really can't get show birds from pet stores. Also some "Breeders" will say there birds are show birds but really aren't. I have both pet store and Show birds. A good show bird will cost between $100 to $300au. "Starting Price" They then go up to $2000 to $5000 au for the top ones.
June 10, 200618 yr Hey Daz, I live just outside Griffith NSW, i can't believe those prices you just showed me!! I saw the cobalt bird at a pet shop for $15!!!! Its not a bad petshop either the guy is a bird breeder and knows his stuff. Thanks for the tip i think my brother when he was little was a member, so i'll definitly look into it!!
June 10, 200618 yr No worries Pecker. A show bird should be above 50 grams to start with. Which is a tall bird not a fat bird. Here is Ash my Cinamon Grey http://www.flexi.net.au/~dwellsadsl/Images/ash.jpg he can top the scales at 72 grams but I try to keep him around 58 grams for Breeding. June 10, 200618 yr Hey Daz, your dark green hen has a blue bum in the picture. Is that just the camera? Or would she not be a green? http://home.gil.com.au/~dwellsadsl/chicks/Chime.jpg Beautiful birds, by the way. Edited June 10, 200618 yr by Sailorwolf

I first thought that she was a parblue type I but as she has grown (that is about a month old now) she has become more dark green. She is going through her first moult so we should see her real colour soon. Her Hatch Date was the 24th January 06. Edited June 10, 200618 yr by daz
June 10, 200618 yr Loved your site Daz! Very good!! I really like your skyblue spangles, are all your birds show size or just your grey one? Hes very macho and handsome by the way. I think maybe parblue is blue with green tinge?? Partial blue coz you can't be blue split for green??? Daz help i'm only learning.....make that guessing! Edited June 10, 200618 yr by pecker
June 10, 200618 yr What's a parblue? A parblue is when the yellow face bleeds into the blue body giving it a greeny tingle to the blue. There are to types of parblue the type one and the golden face. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/budgies028.jpg This is a golden face parblue spangle. Loved your site Daz! Very good!! I really like your skyblue spangles, are all your birds show size or just your grey one? Hes very macho and handsome by the way. Thanks pecker. No not all my birds are show type. I have seven birds that I would class as Show out of which only two are very good. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/LG-026-04.jpg Light Green Opaline Hen http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/LG-022-04.jpg Grey green normal cock. The Opaline cost me $100 au in an action. The hens cost up to $530 au in the auction Edited June 10, 200618 yr by daz
June 10, 200618 yr So Daz, it HAS to be a yellowface to be parblue?? Also do you have any idea what i would partner my grey green with to make blue varieties??
June 10, 200618 yr So Daz, it HAS to be a yellowface to be parblue?? Also do you have any idea what i would partner my grey green with to make blue varieties?? A grey green is a grey gene on a green bird. You can mate with a blue and you could get. Grey, Green, Greygreen or blue. But remember you don't know what the bird is split to.. if any. That is where the fun is in genetics. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/darrylw/budgies024.jpg This hen looks like a light green cinamon but she is split to recessive pied. here is her first clutch. Four recessive pied chicks. the bottom three are recessive on blue birds and the top is recessive on green. ***Note a blue bird is white and a green bird is yellow*** Edited June 10, 200618 yr by daz
June 10, 200618 yr I think i got ya, so i will be in for a suprise really no matter what. What i am thinking, i think i will start off with 2 pairs of breeding birds. I've already got a grey green, so i might partner her with another greygreen, or a green that i really like, so i get a nice mix of greens and then i'll use a blue pied with a hopefully cobalt or violet opalline. Don't know yet see what happens still got a long time yet to think about it.
