Baby Budgie Not Flying

Featured Replies

Hi!

I have a baby budgie that came out of the nest about three weeks ago. It is trying to fly but does not seem to have the strength to get off the ground. It gets airborne about an inch (25mm) high and then crash lands across the ground. It climbs up the aviary walls and will take off but "flys" down and often crashes into wall on other side. Its sibling came out of the nest a few days after and flew almost immediately and has grown quicker. Any ideas?

Thanks, Kerrie

KerrieDan you may find there is a small deformity it has. Can you post a photo so we can see it. At 3 week out of the nest it will be about 7 to 8 weeks old and should have no problems in flying.

Thank you. I have just taken some photos and trying to upload now.

Here goes...I will try to load three pictures. One for when the budgie was first out of the nest and two form today.

It was having trouble flying all the time but we think it may now have damaged its wing in crash landings.

Bye the way, is it too young to determine sex?

I hope this a) works and B) helps. Dan

It looks like it worked.

She looks alright. You may need to check to see if she has free movement of her wings.

She is a grey Recessive Pied. Very Beautifull.

Thank you so much. She certainly flaps the winf when trying to fly and it seems to have free movement but poor little thing just does not stay airborne. Perhaps we should just give her some more time.

Thanks again...very, very much!

Hi again,

Yesteday she flew across the cage and landed on and caught the cage door. I am a very, very proud of her. Perhaps it would have been classed as a "clumsy" flight but to me it was excellent!!!!!

Thanks again to those who gave advice!

Is she flying any better now? To me the left wing looks like it sits too high, like it had been injured. I really notice it in the last picture, but in the second one you can see how high it crosses the right one.

Hi. I have not had a chance to oberve her fly for the past couple of days. I think there is little change. Kerrie says the wing did not look like this when she was first out of the nest. She has never flown properly. We were wondering if she might have damaged it in failed flight attempts when young. She is much smaller than her brother who came out of the nest a couple of days after her. Thanks for your interest. Kerrie and Daniel
