Got Him 5 Days Ago. Sick Or Tame?

Featured Replies

I was walking past my local pet shop where they have 50+ budgies together in a cage. One budgie came over to me when I looked in the cage. Normally not human handled but he wanted to come out. I have had him 5 days now. He is about 4-5 months old. Can this happen? The store thought he was a sick bird and had low expectations of him because he was so calm. He jumps and tries to hover-fly and chirps away, eats and drinks, poops normally. What struck me the most is he won't poop on me unless I have him there for too long. Just likes to be around people. The only time he freeked out is when I had to put him in a box. I ended up keeping him on my shoulder the whole way home, (car windows closed). He has wings partial clipped. But I am letting them grow out. Maybe someone bought him and had to return him? Unuasual. He didn't like being on his back until he learned I would rub his belly. Now he doesn't care and wants to be rubbed. Then he pushes his neck against my fingers to be rubbed. He is acting like a spoiled cockatoo. He did this right out of the cage at the store. But has warmed up much more in the past 5 days.

I could not get the images to show up on here. If anyone knows how please do a relpy with the pictures. Thanks. The cage was susposed to be temporary but he prefers this smaller one.<P>

I don't have one yet :-(

tut tut, (Laughing out loud) :-)

Well we certainly love to give out names (Laughing out loud) so if you want help post a picture and name the post help me name my budgies - he is gorgeous.

Is it odd no I think that every bird is different. So you are a super lucky person to have gotten him with such an affecionate personality.

He is stunning, wow that's amazing he is so tame. I have had my sunny for nearly two weeks, and all he will do is sit on my finger in his cage...

(Laughing out loud) Reibe remember when Bobby hated you and he said he came around. Sunny will too :P

Awesome. I saw a budgie like that once in a petstore. She kept hopping on the side of the cage almost begging me to take her. But her feathers didn't look very good and I was scared she might be sick and give something to my other budgies. I regret not getting her- I'm sure she would have been just like yours - easy to tame and super duper friendly.b

You are SO LUCKY!!! :P I had Bijou for SO long before she would even sit on my finger and my newest addition is a terror (though not for long!) You are incredibly lucky! What a wonderful find!

One of my birds was like this, I got him from a breeder and he was only 5 or 6 weeks old. His mum had died and was being fed by hand, as soon as the breeder saw my adult female feed him he said i could take him. At first he would do all of the things that your bird would except the upside down thing (though he does it now as an adult) but as soon as he started growing up he only has eyes for the female birds and will only do tricks that don't envolve touching his body....so no more scratches. I think if he didn't have 3 females to chase he would still have eyes for me. Your lucky to have sutch a beatiful bird.

Wow you are so lucky to get one so tame and playful a beauty too :P

He just figured out he could somewhat fly now (feathers growing in) and takes every chance to flutter off me. He doesn't seem so interested in playing anymore if it doesn't involve trying to fly somewhere. I figured until he gets the new flight out of his system I might as well go with it. I place him on the table and put up my finger a few inches away. When he tries to fly I move my finger under him to land on. I have got him some what trained to fly to me for up to 3 feet away. He learned coming to me gets a finger to land on and placed back on the table to do it over again. Flying away means going lower to the floor and less flight time. It seems to be working. He comes to me more than not unless there is a breeze and he forgets who I am until he lands and walks back to me.

I have knoticed something. I placeded him in the family room for a few days. This is when he started taking to his cage. When his cage was next to me for most of the day he seems to bond tighter with me. I can tell the difference in just these 3 days. Since I bought him he was no more then 3 feet from me when I was home working on my computer. He only wanted to be near me. Now in the family room he has lost some of that bond. I am going to place him back in the computer room with me to try and tighten up the bond again. He is still super playful but mostly interested in just trying to fly now.

I know if I clipped his wings shorter he'd be like when I bought him, but I can't see taking flight away from him. He can only fly for so long until he gets tired then he should want to play with me.
