Posted May 12, 200619 yr I accidently stood on my budgie :hap: about 5 minutes ago. He was on the floor and I forgot about him then when I got off my bed I stood on him .I think I broke his back because he lays on his front and cant lift him self up, he can move his feet and wings because he trys to fly. My closes avain vet is about 2 hours away and I dont think he will survive the trip and plus my parents arent going to take me in at this time of night 10:40 pm if its a 4 hour trip plus about 1+ hours being there. He is my only tamed budgie and he is 9 weeks old. HELP NEEDED!!!
May 12, 200619 yr OMG OMG OMG!!! i'm so sorry. I dont know what kind of advice i could possible give you besides get to the vet asap! Until then, maybe put him in a shoe box with the lid off, maybe on a wash cloth. try to keep him as comfortable as possible. i hope someone else reads this asap and has some needed advice ***hugs to you and your birdie*** I've cut & posted this on a few other sites too, i hope we get some more advice asap!
May 12, 200619 yr probably not, but sad as it is, if the little one is suffering in pain, they can put her/him to sleep. (i'm leaving work in about 10 minutes, will be back on in about 30 & will try to help some more)
May 13, 200619 yr still trying to get help! advice from another site: You said that your nearest avian vet is 2 hours away, but do you have a general vet who is any closer? It certainly couldn't hurt to give them a call. In the meantime i would suggest trying to keep him as quiet as you can. Do you have a box (perhaps a shoe box) that you could put a soft blanket in? It may be a good idea to try to immobilize his wings as well so that he doesn't do any further damage to himself. Just a very light bandage should be enough - not an elasticated one if you can avoid as this might tighten and restrict his breathing.
May 13, 200619 yr If his spine is broken, it is best to take him to a vet who can humanely do what will have to be done ...Warm and Dark is always best no matter what the injury.
May 13, 200619 yr more advice elsewhere: How terrible! I can't believe that!!! The bird really needs a vet ASAP!!!! He could have ruptured organs, internal bleeding... I doubt that if he won't survive a two hour drive that he will survive over 24hours without medical attention! That poor little bird! Tell him that if he really can't get the bird to the vet to call the vet anyway and they may have advice. I would put lots of towels or blankets, anything warm and very soft in the bottom of the bird's cage and lay him in there and let him rest. I wouldn't handle him much as this may cause further damage. I wish I had more advice My thoughts are with this poor little guy!!! If his spine is broken, it is best to take him to a vet who can humanely do what will have to be done ...Warm and Dark is always best no matter what the injury. \ Thats what I thought too, sad as it is, we always have to do whats best for the pet. no matter how hard it is for us! i havent heard anything else, i wonder how the little one is???
May 13, 200619 yr Author I desided to let him rest for the night and take him in the morning. I took him to the general vet and they said he might just have a buised spine becuase he can still move his wings so they injected him with this stuff I cant remember what it was and he should heal within 24 hours if it is a buised back, if he not alrite by monday they have to call it a day. I am worried about how he surrpose to eat and drink if he cant get up. How suggests how I can feed him and give him water myself or other ways?
May 13, 200619 yr Oh my goodness. My thoughts are with you and your budgie. I hope that it is just a bruise.
May 13, 200619 yr Give an avian vet a phonecall and talk this over. Your bird needs help from someone who 100% knows what they're doing. We can throw you ideas all day but it's not going to compare to what a certified avian vet can tell you.
May 14, 200619 yr I do hope your little one is okay, it seems odd that the vet can say there are no broken bones with out an x-ray being taken. On Monday I would request an x-ray personally if he has not improved really that is the only way if you know for sure if there are any bones broken. With budgies have such tiny bones and being fragile I can't imagine just a look over can tell you what is wrong. I know when I thought I sprained my wrist they took an x-ray and there was a hair-line fracture. Keep us updated..
May 16, 200618 yr The vet probably said the spine wasn't broken, because he could still move his legs. If the spine is broken there is a 99% chance of becoming paralysed. Thus if he can still move his legs, his spinal cord is not severed and therefore it is likely that his back is not broken. However there is every chance that he may have broken ribs, pelvis and vertebrae. Yes talk to your avian vet How is his breathing? Is it normal, laboured?
May 16, 200618 yr Author I am still waiting for one of my parents to take me to an avain vet! He is still alive today (thank god) and he is looking alrite, not breathing heavily for any thing and also he is eating fine but not sure if he is drinking. He can now lift his head up after that injection he had, but he still cant perch, walk or fly. Hopefully I will be able to take him in tomorrow and give him an x-ray to see what is actually wrong with him.
May 16, 200618 yr your in our thoughts and so is your budgie, keep us updated and I hope your parents can get that little baby there, I am sure he is in a lot of pain.
May 16, 200618 yr thanks for the update. I would think if he is eating, he is drinking too. Im glad the injection is helping.
May 17, 200618 yr Glad he is holding his own, since he cannot fly or perch make sure he has easy access to food and water on the floor and hope he can get to the vet very soon. :glare:
May 17, 200618 yr Make sure they call for an appointment. It can be hard to get in so the longer they wait to make the appointment, the longer the poor budgie will be lying around in pain waiting to see a vet. It's been far too long as it is, keep on your parents, it's cruel of them to make the budgie suffer the wait. :glare:
June 25, 200618 yr I was browsing through the forums looking for information, & came across this thread. How is the budgie going? Is he okay???? I was so shocked to read what happened, I just wanted to see if everything has turned out okay in the end. Tracey
