  1. They are all from different breeders for a starter so it´s not genetically what we know. We have checked the youngster for viruses wich came out clean. and, to our great joy when we was at the vet last week for a checkup to see how much worse it had gotten all the new tests came out clean. the X-ray was like frome a handbook and so was the exterior examination according to the vet, and the blood test didnt show anything at all. it was all like taken from a handbook of how a healthy bird should be. the things we did was first of all move to a different apartment in a new town far away from the old place (that way we also got to a new vet) second of all we gave them organic decaffeinated green tea! and organic aloe vera juice diluted in water (1 part aloe vera juice and 4 parts water) but they only got that for 2 days so we´re not sure how it affected them. but anyhow, the examination sais he is as healthy as a bird can be! also the bird we have that had a huge amount of basophiles a couple of months ago had almost the same results, she did have some high values in the blood, but the vet said it might just have been stress. so, whatever happened the symptoms they shown earlier is completely gone. but, we still keep an eye on them just in case.
  2. Omg the moulting ones. I like your photos, nice for the birds to get branches in to enjoy. Whats the name of the tree where the branches come from?
  3. An update.. in January we tried a medicine called Stronghold on her, its the same type as ivermectin (if thats spellt wright) in case she had some internal parasites. At the same time we reduced her stress by putting her in her own cage with a very kind budgie that wasnt bothering her. After a few doses she became like a new budgie, it was a joy to see. I didnt know she could be that fast in her movements, flys, curious and playful. She seemed to enjoy life a lot. In march she started moulting thou and that positive change dissapeared. Once again we have started on Stronhold, giving to the back of her neck every second week. So far no change for the better. I have to face a difficult decision if she wont get better. Her diagnos is still unclear.

Thank you. Unfortunately my budgies cant get natural sunlight, its freezing spring weather here in Sweden. What is carrot and sellery good for? I dont know where to find that juice in organic form for them, but i´ll give him carrots now more often. Fresh carrots. Now the vet isnt 100 % sure its blood cancer he got. Getting him to the vet next week to another avian vet for a check up of his blood. But wish me luck, Ive finally found an organic decaffeinated green tea for him. Will give him today.
  5. I removed the lamp right away of course. What i dont know thou is if there is some gas inside the infrared lamps that could harm them. We bought a couple of new heating lamps today. A couple of my budgies need heating as they have health issues at the moment.

Thanks. I dont breed, althou ive had that thought to breed my pair. They are often mating, but picky, the hen isnt healthy for that I dont have children so they are more like my babies, my family. Unfortunatrly 2 of them are passed now.

Of course I have to post a few pictures here... Have taken HEAPS of photos of my budgies during the last years.
  8. How cute he is.
  9. Our budgies infrared heatlamp just broke, exploded above their cage. Is that dangerous to them? We are Opening up the window here, in case... But would like to know.
  10. Thanks for a great answer. what about a LCD tv? whats the distance recomended around that? i have read that it shouldnt be more then a couple of inches, but i dont know if i can trust that source completely. anyway, we dont have anything other than the TV (wich is a LCD) in the same room as them right now. they are placed atleast 3m from the TV now, and when thy are out flying they dont stay within 2m from it anyway (they usually stay on the curtain pole) so im not really concerned about it after your answer, but it´s great to know so we can avoid placing bad things near them in the future. what do you think about Infrared heat lights? they should be okay i hope? and same about special bird UV lights (from Arcadia), what distance would you recomend between that and the cage? there are a lot of questions right now, since 1 bird died in august in Leukemia, one in Mars from Lymphoma and our youngest one wich has been with us since November has very high levels of Lymfocytes (wich might indicate Lymphoma or Leukemia) if it´s effecting them THAT FAST it must be something very bad. the youngest one is from a different supplier and a different breeder so it´s impossible it may be from there. our only conclusion is that it is (or was) something in our old home. we pray that our youngster may live a long and happy life, but cancer in birds seems to be impossible to save them from.
  11. Dont know. Maybe birds used to be hardier than they are these days as we breed them further away from the original budgie. Maybe seed used to be better than it is today too I think so too. Budgies 10-15 years ago were healthier. Ive been thinking about the same thing as Cara. Some birds have poor diet, not much to do in the cage and are not flying outside the cage and manage to get old. While you can do everything right (what you believe is right) and your budgies have health problems. I know that feeling.

Ive read a bit about chamomile tea, that its as you say for stressed budgies.. Suppose theres none coffein in there. Ive read that black tea has about twice as coffein (that is the dangerous part..?) as green tea, so if black tea is not toxic to them green tea perhaps isnt either..? Just thinking loud. Can you tell me how you dilute the tea, you say you give them weak chamomile, do you dilute it with water?

Thank you for your answer. I read somewhere on the net a few days ago that someone gave green tea to their budgies....and perhaps one more person. But im still quite afraid. Yes she is a vet for exotic birds and other little pets, one of the few exotic bird vets in Sweden. We now moved away from their clinic but still keeping email contact, as we are awating some more results tests, virus tests for the budgie i would like to give tea. Im not 100 % confident in her.. P.S. 10 minutes ago I noticed that green tea is a part of Aloe Detox. I dont know who members here are familiar with Aloe Detox, this is very new information even for me. One can try it when a bird doesnt respond to medication, especially when the liver and kidney are ill. I dont know if it works, havent got it home yet, but just informing. http://www.vitacost.com/lily-of-the-desert-aloe-vera-80-detoxifying-formula
  14. We have a Air Purifier and a Air Humidifier wich we bought for our birds, but we are thinking that maybe they are causing our problems, both are ionizing and we wonder if they produce some kind of radiation or similar. we know that the purifier according to the manufacturer may produce "small amounts" of ozon, might that be the cause? does anyone know anything about it? is the ionizing dangerous to the birds? does anyone use similar things? we dont use them anymore after we moved and we are afraid to use them right now (until we find sources that say if they are dangerous or not, we wont take any chances.)
  15. Thank you. They bought bought in different stores in Stockholm, two of them from different suppliers, from personal homes. So its not that... At first we thought it was something wrong with my flat that made them very sick, like radon, I´ll never know if there was radon in my flat. I moved a week ago. After research about leukemia we suspect the air purifier and air humidifier both are ionising, that I bought FOR my birds earlier. Like radion thats been cause their bloodcancers. I dont use them since a week ago.

Hi, since i´ve found out that my youngest budgie is having too much of lyphoma blood cells in his blood, ive found an article online that says that leukemia in people can be helped by drinking green tea. Ive also read in a few places online that tea is dangerous for budgies. But I would like to try it on my budgie, hoping that it will help him with his blood cancer in this early stage. Can you guys tell me if you have tried using tea (green tea especially) in your birds drinking water?? Is tea dangerous or not? My budgie vet, when i asked her, didnt say its dangerous she thought i could try it. So im confused. /Desperate
  17. Im a 29 year old female who didnt know much about budgies until a few years ago, thou Ive had my latest budgies for almost 4 years now. My boyfriend has become a budgie lover too, so we are both reading and writing here. Ive had heaps of health problems with my 6 budgies, have lost 2 of them recently in blood cancer, and my youngest male has been shown to have blood cancer when we did tests. Thats how i found this forum, thru google search about information. Right now its extremely tough on me emotionally to even having my little feathered friends cause i dont know how their health will progress, if I´ll lose another one soon.. But i can post pics of all 6 that I´ve had. Ocean, who showed cancer in his blood a couple of weeks ago. Macgyver and Boydis ( deceased in Leukemia in august way too young.) My sweetest Sessan who died in Lyphoma a few weeks ago, too young. Picky. And Malish.
  18. Is electromagnetic radiation harmful to small birds like budgies? im talking about the sort of EMR that is emitted from things like computers, cell phones, TV and stuff like that. normal household items (not including microwave ovens) my GF is afraid our budgis are getting ill becouse we have them in our living room. so i would like to know if anyone has had experience or just heard any reliable info if it´s harmful or not. the reason i´m asking is becouse in August one of our birds died from Luekemia and now in Mars a second budgie died from yet unknown causes (we are waiting for the autopsy report) but it´s likely it´s some form of cancer or blood dicease. and to top it of, a 3rd budgie (wich we bought in late october) has had a eleveated level of "lymfocytes" i think they´re called but no infection wich would mean he has started to develop Leukemia. the swedish radiological protection agency sais there is no risk for leukemia due to EMR in small children or animals (as was a great fear some 20 years ago), but what about budgies, i expect they mean cats and dogs when they say animals. i´ts too much of a coincidence if 2 of our birds (that is in no way related or has ever met eachother) developes Leukemia and a 3rd dies from things that might be cancer or Leukemia in less then 9 months. We have even moved to a new apartment in a new city becouse of this.
  19. thank you for the link, ive read that earlier as well. They write very positive things about aloe vera for birds.. I didnt understand your first sentences due to language barrier. My gf wanted to hurry up getting aloe vera, as we havent been able to find an organic aloe vera plant today, she bought an aloe vera juice, that is said to be 100 % pure. Still unsure of the ratio, but we took about 20 % aloe vera and 80 % water. Waiting for how our budgies will feel now.
  20. Hi. I have a few questions about Aloe Vera as medication for sick birds. I have read thate some here use it on their birds but we couldnt really find out how. We think of using it as an internal treatment and we would like to know how to use it. Those of you that use the plant, is it organic? we have a hard time finding any organic plants here. Is there anyone that use Juice bought in the healt stores? what ratio do you use it in the water? is there any danger in overdosing it? we can only find 99,7% pure aloe vera juice here, is that okay? (it sais it has added minerals) do note, we HAVE been to the vet but we still want to try this alternative medications as the vet cant do anything becouse she dont have a clue what the base problem might be. We have had birds that have died in Leukemia (wich none of the avian vets we have talked to have seen in budgies) and we have a boy now that according to blood test shows some signs of potential future development of leukemia. it has gone so far with strange helth issues that we have abandoned our old home and moved as we belive that there might have been something bad in our old place.
  21. It is not metal poisoning, we know that. there is no bare metal in her cage or any of the other cages we use at the moment for our birds and there is no dangerous metal in any of the toys, we are very careful about that.. Also she dont have any symptoms that points to metal poisoning. We did have a cage a few years ago that might not have been good, but when we discovered that another of our birds liked to lick at the metal we got a new cage, and we have changed to a bigger cage after that so the current cages are good. and has been for the last 2 years, maybe more. We have basically tried everything from antibiotics, changing diets, air purifiers, air moisteners (we have dry air in scandinavia in the winter), treatening against parasites, medicaction against fungus , contacting other avian vets and as you know, asking on foreign (and domestic) forums if ANYONE has any clue to what it MIGHT be.. but, no luck. so, we dont know what to do now. The only improvements we have seen has been temporary. Yesterday and today she has again seemed a bit better. We hope it will last.
  22. The video is from 1,5 year ago, when she was bad. She sits similar to this. http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/9704/20101101181832.mp4
  23. I sympathise with you. It can be a hard decision to tell whether their suffering is bad enough to warrant euthanasia. It seems as though you've gone the extra mile with vet care, trying to diagnose this. What medications and treatments has the vet already done? Because even if the vet can't make a firm diagnosis, it seems like they would at least try antibiotics or whatever other medications they have in their arsenal before just giving up and euthanizing. Also, you don't mention seeds in her diet. I know a lot of people, including vets, think that seeds are bad for birds, and they should be on a pellet only diet. Is that the case here? Because I would suggest that it might just make her a little bit happier if she can have some seeds in her diet. (That's not meant as a cure, just a way of perhaps lowering her stress, and providing nutrients that can only be found in seeds, that pellets cannot duplicate, no matter how carefully formulated they are.) ( It is obvious that I fall in the seed camp, not the pellet camp. I think they make an okay supplement, but not a proper mainstay.) It's not likely that people here can diagnose over the internet what the vet on hand has failed to find. But perhaps someone who has had success with the symptoms you mention can give you some ideas. Good luck, I hope you are able to help your bird. Oh, and welcome to the forum. Cheers. She is eating pellets because she was feeling worse when on a seed diet. Pellets made her feel much better a year ago, but are not helping now. I give her a bit of seed at times, and millet, to make her feel better at least psychologically. The vet has tried a number of things. One medicin we had earlier is Mycostatin, i cant remember what the medicin does. Then also tried a medicin starting on M... that should releave pain. (just in case). She has gotten antibiotics too when it all started, cause my other birds had an infection, and i treated them all together. At that time i had gotten a new bird and started to take grass and grass seeds from outside for the first time, and she became sick at that time, almost 3 years ago. Wow, poor budgie on the video. No Malish doesnt have any sounds like that. She sounds quite normal. We are going to give her another dose of her treatment tomorrow at the vet, but im not too hopeful now. if it doesnt help i have to think of her and put her to sleep. Which is devastating, but i believe she´s suffering. And Ive done almost everything i can to help her. I can look it up on the net, Thyroid problem and symptoms. Her cere is switching between brown and light blue. She has been in her own cage with a budgie friend. so ive tried to make it less stressful for her. She has a warm lamp under which she often sits. And im giving her access to the toys she love, everything to make her last weeks more happy. I let her fly too, she seems to enjoy that.
  24. First off, im new here and found this forum while searching for a possible answer to what might be wrong with one of my budgies. English is not my first language so bare with me on that. This is the case: My budgie (Malish) has had loose stool with a big excess of urine for about 2,5 years now. And ive been to the vet with her, taking blood tests but it didnt know anything accept for an unusual high percentage of a white blood cell called Basophil. Our vet is specialised in birds but even she had never seen anything like that, so we couldnt give her any treatment. She´s been feeling quite good over a period, later on, a year ago she was sleeping heaps etc so i was thinking of puting her to sleep. But suddenly she became well again, happy and flying around. A year later she´s worse again, the blood tests showed the same, no infection, the vet says its not diabetes, and the x-ray was normal. She couldnt find anything wrong except for the same large amount of Basophiles. I can see in her eyes she´s not well, on her posture, she´s not very active either, thou she likes to fly still in the room. Our vet and I are trying a last thing, treating her right now for possible air sack mites, and if she´s not better and i dont find another possible cause of her bad health I´ll have to put my baby to sleep. Which i dont want, but might have to. Right now her symptoms are: Excessive urine, heavy breathing, moving her tail up and down, wings are hanging below her tail quite a lot, tired eyes, less active, othen feathers not laying down as they should and sometimes she "bows" with her head after drinking. She´s getting good food, Harrissons pellets, high potency, and veggies and herbs sometimes, and we have a air purifier. I believe she´s a stressed bird overall, she´s scared of us humans. And some of our other budgies are bullying her. Does anyone knows what could be wrong with her? That would help us greatly. When i googled the other day on basophilia, i found a lot of different possible causes, like air sack mites, respiratory desease, stress, inflammation and chlamydia psittacosis. Therefore our vet agreed to treat her now for air sack mites. Im not sure at all that that is what she has... Hate seeing her feeling bad.
