Koko Seems Sick....
Thanks again! The vet visit went really well. The vet there wasn't a certified avian vet, but it helped that her family used to own budgies and even a couple relatives used to breed them. She didn't know exactly what it was but you were right KAZ, she did prescribe Baytril. :hap: It was one 15mg tablet that we had to take to the pharmacist to crush for us. So now we have to dissolve it in 5mL of water and keep it refrigerated until we have to use it. Then we have to give her 0.11mL twice a day orally for 10 days. She also gave us a syringe to use for giving it to her, and it helps that I got her used to drinking from one with water in it before. I'll update on how she does tomorrow morning. Wish us luck! Koko Seems Sick....
if its an energy saver globe there wont be heat coming from it. The government banned all other globes and they are no longer available http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....4&hl=globes Hmm.... looky what I found in our closet: Are those okay? I'm not sure what other options we have, but the smaller 40W bulb won't be able to fit inside the lamp I have. Here's a video I took of Koko to show you how she looks: Sorry it's dark, but the video setting just does that to the image. Kassidy

Koko Seems Sick....
Helllo robyn, Thanks for the help. I'll look for a 40W bulb, (Or More) but the lamp will probably be close because it has a clip I can install onto the cage. I saw her eating this morning, and she was as alert as ever since I noticed these differences. The ONLY differences I noticed was.... - Her tail bobbing. - Her chest MAYBE heaving. - Her cere was wet that ONE time, for an hour before it dried. It was clear, and could have easily been water. - She was kind of tired looking, but nothing too bad. And that was it. This morning she wasn't tired looking anymore, but this was obviously caused by it being close to their bed time when I noticed her. Also, I haven't seen any liquid around her cere, so this could have been a false alarm, but her tail IS still bobbing and her chest is also heaving still. Either way, we're taking her to the vet for an appointment on Wednesday, because this way we will know if her health is at risk. Until then, I'll provide extra warmth and watch her more often to see any differences in her behaviour. I'll keep you updated. Kassidy

Koko Seems Sick....
Thanks everyone! Well, I asked my Dad and he said we can't go to the vet. So instead, I asked if we could at least call them. He agreed and called. I was there to listen and tell him any information they asked about. First, he told them what we saw that was wrong with Koko. (Tail bobbing, slight fluffing of feathers, etc.) They then asked what age see was, etc.... Then the my Dad just listened for a bit. (I guess the person on the phone went to ask someone about this) Then they came back and told my Dad something, and he said something about if there was anything we could do and stuff, then he hung up. They said it was Pneumonia. And they couldn't do much about it. They said we would have to find vets that expertise in avian care. I'll start searching for an avian vet as soon as possible, and start researching about Pneumonia once you guys confirm this. EDIT: YES! I found a list of animal hospitals' contact information I saved from before and we called one that's almost even closer than the other. It's about maybe 20 - 30 minutes away. My Dad talked to them longer than the other ones but I wasn't there that long to listen. When he was finished I went back and asked him what they said and he said that we're going in on Wednesday. So until then, what can I do to help Koko? I read that heat helps a lot. Also, to move her into another smaller hospital cage. How could I make this? I don't have any spare cages, so I'll have to make do with the one (She already lived in and that) I prepared for her until I get any more information. For the heat, I found our old Leapard Gecko Heating lamp.... But I have to change the bulb. Could I use this? And what watt bulb should I use in it. Any and all advice and suggestions are all greatly appreciated. Kassidy

Okay, I'll see what they decide, but I'll be sure to consult with you guys when I come back. I'll probably take along a notepad to keep track of whatever I want to mention to you guys.... Wish Koko and I luck! Kassidy

Koko Seems Sick....
Thanks for the quick reply KAZ. I checked on her again and I noticed that she didn't have wet nostrils, (This could have been from her drinking her water, because these are auto-refilling ones that could very possibly get their ceres wet) but she was heaving a little like before and her tail was bobbing. I told and showed my parents her, and they were concerned too. So we will most likely be bringing her to the vet tomorrow. Here where I live the only possible certified avian vets around are probably about 3 hours away, but I still am looking. I'm not 100% sure there is actually an avian vet that close, but I'll ask about any possibilities of avian vets at our local vet tomorrow. (These are the people who saved Koko in the past from egg-binding, and I was very satisfied because a) I had to leave her there alone, and b ) She didn't even looked stressed afterwards) I'll tell you how it goes tomorrow and update on what happened. Koko Seems Sick....
I just went downstairs to check on the budgies. I looked at Koko and she seemed to be fluffed up, and kinda tired looking. Like, squinting her eyes and looking just plain dull. Well, I was just talking to them for a bit. Then I noticed something shiny looking on Koko's cere. I kept watching, and I noticed that there was a watery liquid around her nostrils... I carefully examined her and I noticed her tail was bobbing slightly. She obviously seems sick, but I don't really know what it is. Can it be a cold? I think I almost heard a sneeze when going into their room, but it could have easily been something else. Any ideas what this could be? Also, what should I do to help her if she is indeed sick? Thanks in advance for any help! Kassidy

About To Be A 1st Time Budgie Owner!
Welcome! I bet your very excited to get your first pet (Budgie), and choosing to research about them first. It's best to research than to step into the unknown before knowing what you're getting into. Just remember, research as much as you can before hand so that you will be prepared. And keep researching, because you can learn something new every day. You could read up in the Budgie FAQs here on this site, which are very great for any current and future budgie owners. They hold a lot of great information, so I suggest checking that out. Anyway, good luck. I hope you find a good place to get your new little friend. And if you have any questions, ASK THEM! (But stay on topic here) I bet everyone here will be more than happy to help you out. Kassidy

My Budgies' New Diet
I was actually wanting to grow some, but I had no clue that their dried seed heads are okay to feed the birds! I'll try to find some seeds as soon as possible, because we actually do have extra topsoil that we aren't using. they are good for birds when added as en extra, for treats or used when colder weather is happening like we add oats to the seed for winter. Will do, I'll tell you when I get some planted. Could you give me a step by step guide to dry them and stuff? I'd be very happy if you could. Thanks for the suggestions! Kassidy

My Budgies' New Diet
July 6 - Since I couldn't feed my budgies their broccoli last night, I decided to feed them some tonight. First, I hung some pieces up from hemp twine. Then I picked a few to hand feed to them. Kasper was too scared of it to try any, but guess who loved it? That's right, Koko started to nibble on the tiny pieces I was giving to her, then once I gave her some bigger pieces, she tried it and kept eating it! I managed to get a few photos and some videos of her eating it. Sorry they were blurry, I had to use one hand to take them. This is their first time seeing anything like broccoli, so this is a huge step for Koko! Kasper is still afraid of them. The only other thing I ever tried giving them were the grapes, they also nibbled on those on my 2nd try. Thanks for reading and watching! Kassidy

My Budgies' New Diet
Sorry for taking so long for an update, besides I didn't have the time to be feeding them too many extra foods, so here are the things I gave them this past week: June 29 - Gave Koko a new cuttlebone, she shredded it up before bedtime. :yuck: July 1 - I mixed some pellets with seeds for the two budgies, but they didn't go anywhere near them. July 3 - I poured some pellets on top of their seeds thinking that they would try them first, but instead, I found seed husks on top of them at the end of the day. July 4 - Gave Koko another cuttlebone, but she also shredded this one to pieces, and left the mess there for me to clean up. :fear July 5 - I didn't have time to make anything for their breakfast, but I'm gonna cut up some pieces of broccoli up for their supper. Then I'll hang them up by strings for them to play with inside their cages. (I'll update on their reaction to the broccoli) Thanks for reading! Kassidy

My Budgies' New Diet
My log for the last 4 days: June 24 - I handfed my budgies some halved grapes with millet spray sprinkled on top to get them used to the taste. I had to really get it close to them for them to actually try to nibble it. June 25 - I did the same thing but I took them both out at the same time on their playstand and they shared one at a time. They started to actually nibble on the grape part this time instead of the millet spray. June 26 - This morning I stuck two halves of grapes in between the bars of each of the budgies' cages and they started to eat them! Koko tried them first and kept nibbling until I took them out, then Kasper started nibbling after a couple minutes of just staring at them in complete fear. June 27 - This morning I did the same thing but they recognised them easily and inched over to start eating them right after I stuck them in. I left and came back after a half an hour and found the grapes half eaten on the bottom of their cages. They ate them aggressively! I'll try to get some pictures to show you guys the evidence for tomorrow! Thanks for reading!

Please Help, Koko Is Bleeding!
keep her warm and quiet poo is runny as shoked id say a small bump to a budgie is like a brick falling on our heads just keep her calm Thanks for the help, she seems much better now. I feed her some millet spray crushed on some halves of grapes to make sure she ate something and she seemed much happier, and calmer after seeing Kasper. I'll still keep my eye on her though.

Please Help, Koko Is Bleeding!
Just about 5 minutes ago I took Koko out to hand-feed her some green lentils I prepared for them yesterday. She was doing fine nibbling on some pieces I was giving her then all of a sudden she flew off her play stand onto the ground (She's clipped) then I went over to pick her up. I checked to see if she was okay then put her back on the stand once again to let her calm down. A couple seconds after putting her on the stand, she flew towards her cage (A couple feet away) then suddenly swooped down and hit the dresser that their cages were on. (It wasn't that hard, maybe as hard as tapping someone on the head) then fell rapidly to the ground. I half ran over to where she was and looked at her from where I was standing. She looked fine and was waiting for me to pick her up. She was alert and looking up at me. I picked her up and put her in her cage, then I noticed that she had blood on the tip of her beak. She kept grinding her beak and opening it then rubbing it on her perch. She rubbed a little blood on the perch while doing this. I watched her in her cage and was looking all over her for where the blood was coming from. It almost looked like she was eating something the way she was grinding her beak, but I'm sure it was blood. I then ran upstairs to get a Q-tip then went back down to check on her. The blood was dried on her beak and she wasn't doing the grinding anymore. So I rubbed her beak with the Q-tip and while she was trying to bite the Q-tip I looked inside of her mouth and I couldn't really see anything wrong with it. She now looks a little more fluffed up than normal and a bit uncomfortable, but I might just be a little too worried. The bleeding looks like it stopped but what should I do now? What should I do if it starts bleeding again? Please, I'm just so worried about her. I'll go check on her now to see how she is. Please help! Oh, also. When I took her out to check her beak, she took a really watery yellow poop, is this normal?

Green Lentils?
Hi, Where would I get this at? I will be happy to try them out with my budgies. Thanks. I buy it in the health food section of the supermarket. You can also buy it at heath food shops. I have only seen the white quinoa. You can also buy it as flakes but I get the seed so that you can sprout it. It costs about $1.70 per 100 grams in Queensland. Another bird lover has told me that it is small fraction of that price in California. Still, a little of it goes a long way. Thanks, I'll try and find it. Once I finish the soaking proccess do the lentils go bad? If so, how long does it take for them to? I'll start soaking some tonight and see how it goes, but hope I get an answer by tomorrow so I'll know after they're done.

My Budgies' New Diet
Okay, corn is on my grocery list now. I thought that celery was as bad as lettuce, I read it in the FAQs. But I just figured it would be okay for getting them ued to eating other foods right now. Are the leaves of celery okay for the budgies to eat?

My Budgies' New Diet
I just would like to start a new topic about switching my budgies from a diet of seeds, and pellets that they barely eat to a new way more nutritious diet with fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, etc. They haven't ever eaten anything other than seed and pellets before (Except my deceased budgie Bubbles who ate carrots) and I am very excited to introduce some fresh vegetables to them. To start them off, I went to buy some groceries for them yesterday. Here's what I got: Groceries: Grapes Apples Celery Broccoli Carrots Almonds Green Lentils Peanut Butter (For making my homemade treats) Aready had in stock: Seed Millet Spray Pellets Cereal (All-Bran) Bananas All of the groceries were organic (Even the peanut butter ) except for the almonds. The grapes I got are what I'm going to introduce to them first, because they will be what I will be 'wasting' with getting my budgies to try them. (I have a huge container of them). First, I will be trying to hand feed Kasper some of the foods because Koko is in the proccess of being hand tamed and she doesn't trust me as much as Kasper does, plus she will try what he eats which will make it easier. I will be updating on here what I give them, how I serve it, what they eat/try, asking questions, and so on. I'd be more than happy if anyone gives me ideas or suggestions as to what else I could give them. Oh, I also forgot to add that I bought a few pizza pans made out of aluminum foilware that I thought would be useful for putting out food for the budgies. Would they be safe to use for that purpose? We are also growing a garden that is huge with many different types of vegetables and stuff that could also be feed to my budgies. Here's the link to the topic I started on my garden: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....c=28926&hl= Thanks in advance!
