Friend Has Breeding Problem With Budgies
If these are pet budgies, don't worry, they'll be fine and will raise the chicks no problem. Budgies breed at 5 months in the wild all the time, its only us show breeders who want birds to mature and reach their full potential that frown upon it. Clearwing

Hobby Or Business?
Huh? What is an ABN? By business I meant making enough money to support the care...not necessarily profit. ABN = Australian Business Number used for taxation purposes
-
Hobby Or Business?
Matt I don't think it is about the legality of the ABN as much as it is about your attitude to the hobby. Budgies have been my HOBBY for 49 years, but I approach it with a business mind set.

Hobby Or Business?
There seem to be two strains of budgie breeders. The first the birds lover [pet keeper] this hobby will always cost them money , but they don't care the birds are their pets. Secondly, the serious show breeder, if he is wise he/she treats the birds just like a buisness. Purchasing origonal stock, breeding from them and selling off the surplus. One of the problems i have noticed is breeders will go to an auction and buy birds at fairly hefty prices, they breed with these birds then sell the ofspring for peanuts [stupid] If you pay good money for your purchases, you must demand good money for their offspring, however you must only buy from reputable breeders who are constantly winning, which means your initial investment may be substantial.

Joining A Bird Club!
The best thing about joining a club is, the people you meet. You already know you have something in common, so the conversation is eazy. I've been a club member for over 40 years and have made friends arround the world. Clearwing

Hobby Or Business?
I'm sorry Kaz I have to disagree with you. I know several people who make very good money out of budgies. I personally put three kids through university selling birds to pay for fees etc. You must have a stud of line bred winning budgerigars, then the price they fetch makes it quite profitable and its tax free as its a hobby. Good Morning Australia!
Good morning, yes you had your times right, but everyone was sleeping in, personally I've been out in the avairy feeding the birds. Should be a hot day here 34 degrees so my family are coming for a Bar B Q tea and a swim. Cheers Clearwing

Coccidiosis
A good read, my ex budgie partner used to manage a poultry farm here in Victoria. As part of his employment contract he was not allowed to keep either birds or poultry at home, did that effect you Nubbly5. Clearwing

Our Pets
Lovelly Renee, really love the "skinny pigs" as my sons used to call them. I think most of us could be called animal lovers, I had beautiful gold fish in a pond outside my lounge room window, until one day I came home and found the wire mesh[ that used to cover the pond] in my carport and a Blue Crane standing in the pond looking very content. Very sad day. Cheers Clearwing

Is She In Breeding Condition
Whilst this bird no doubt will breed the question is, should you breed with her? I believe the bird is too young and should be allowed to go through another moult before she breeds that may be 2-3 more months. Clearwing

Karma
Good on ya Dave, I am a Christian Pastor and would happily debate the good vs evil or creation vs evolution with anyone, but not on this forum! This is about our hobby BUDGERIGARS! Amen here endenth the sermon.. Clearwing

Floor Dwellers
I have a large flight with plenty of perches, however more and more of my birds choose to live on the floor of the cage. They are not overweight, nor are they runners, they can all fly, but they choose to stay on the floor. I am wondering as we strive to produce birds with "dirrectional feather" are we producing birds that choose not to fly as they have difficulty looking forward? Are other breeders experiencing this problem also? Thoughts? Clearwing

One More Question.
Sean, the budgies are like prisoners in our cages, as prisoners say "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one your with." Personally I'd get some female company for your boys, cheers Clearwing

Swollen Leg
I just use household disinfectant, from the laundry cupboard. I used to use detol but now just a generic brand. Many years ago detol was used as the cure for scally face it was applied straight to the affected area, I found it a bit harsh on the beak and nostrils but still use it on the feet. It works very quickly. Cheers Clearwing

Mauve Or Grey?
I had a look before when i was trying to figure out what she is and her tail feathers look completely black... what does this mean, is she a grey variety or mauve. I didn't know there were different varieties of grey before so i'm even more confused I've just been looking through other topics and I found this one:http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....=26306&st=0I did understand most of what was said in this topic however the addition of this other possibility only serves to confuse me more!!If it helps to say that Jemima looks just like the budgie referred to in this topic then... She looks just like the budgie the topic is about Is this a possibility for Jemima? Could she be grey carrying a violet gene??Also she is Jemima, as in Jemima Puddle-Duck If the tail is black she is grey, as ashow bird the blue sheen would be considered a fault. As a pet or avairy bird, I'm sure she is beautiful. You can only really know her genetics by asking the breeder the family history or by breeding from her to discover what chicks[varieties and colours] she produces. cheers Clearwing

Lacewing Chick
Look at the tail feathers, have the main two tail shafts grown beyond the other tail primaries, or is the tail still short. If the two main tail feathers are long then it will not be a mop, if they are short then chances are you have a very pretty mop. cheers Clearwing
-
Mauve Or Grey?
The tail is the key is it blue or black? You may need to take the bird into the natural sunlight to tell, check the quill of the feather[the centre vain] is it blue or black. Good luck Clearwing

Swollen Leg
Have you already removed the rings? I would suggest you bath the foot in disinfectant not diluted but straight disinfectant, this will often take away the swelling. And I'm sure they'll still breed as lets face it, it takes more than a sore foot to stop nature. Clearwing

Swollen Leg
Yes I agree, scally mite under the ring is most likely, funny enough I just cut the ring of a hen I borrowed today for exactly that purpose. She never had scally on her face, but the ring leg was swollen, when I cut the ring off the scale fell away , I bathed it in disinfectant and the hen is happy. Clearwing
