The main reason for budgies fighting is overcrowding, there have been many successful breeders using colony breeding, But the flight must be large enough for the number of birds and plenty of spare breeding boxes available. Good Luck Clearwing

Hans you could try placing two perches side by side about 3cm or a bit more than an inch apart, that would allow the hen to lay on the perch during mating. This has often worked for me.

Hello Hans, it is not eazy to get budgies to breed when you only have two pairs. Budgies are very social and like to nest together in large numbers. My only suggestion is to leave a radio on during the day making the area sound busy not quiet and perhaps swap the cock birds over to try and stimulate the hens, good luck, your set up looks lovely I'd love to have birds in my house, but my wife hates birds! Hey Guys thanks for the replies, but i think you have missed my point. I don't want to know what your club does now, I want to know what the club doesn't do which you think would be an improvement. I'm looking to change the way we do "budgie club." I've been attending club nights for nearly 50 years and nothing has changed, just the same ol small show, guest speaker, lots of talk have a cuppa go home then do it all again next month. We must have some better ideas than that!

Cleanliness is the best answer, those moths lay the eggs in the deep litter or seed. Sweep up all seed from avairy floor and make sure all cage floors are clean, store all seed in air tight containers. Then spray moths with Pea Beau as it is safe for birds. Good Luck Cheers Clearwing

Dead in shell is often caused by a lack of humidity, you might try spraying a fine mist {water] arround the outside of nests where eggs are due to hatch. I know some people spray the eggs but I'm not a fan of that. Cheers Clearwing

As I have recently become our club President, I would like to pick your brains. What would you suggest would improve your budgie club? There are people on this site who say they are not listened to, by the establishment, well here is your chance. All ideas are fine, no mater how far from left field. I want to make our club nights an event people want to attend, but I've been breeding birds forever and my ideas may be stale. I respect the opinions on here, reguardless of how long you've been in the hobby, so come on have a go! Cheers Clearwing

PS I don't hate auctions and have made a couple of outstanding purchases over the last two years, but I love the debate!

I guess Kaz that backs up y statement, it is very difficult to start at a reasonable level of quality, unless you have thousands of dollars to spend and can wait a few years for a return. For the record, I haven't sold any birds for 3 years, I've been giving them to begginners to try and "grow" our local club. Money isn't everything.

Are auctions killing our hobby, let me explain: up until two years ago, I could ring most of Victorias top breeders and say " I have a begginner who wants a few pairs." I could take that begginner to visit the breeder and for $200-$400 a bird they could buy some breeding stock say 5 pairs. Now if I ring the same breebers they say so me,"sorry mate, I can't help you. If I sell your begginer 5 pair I'll get $3000, but if I put the same ten birds up for auction I might get $10,000." Given that this is a true and valid argument, my question is how many honest fanciers are going to be prevented from even starting in the hobby, because of the expense. And how does a parent give their teenage child the opportunity to try breeding budgerigars as a hobby. Call me old fashioned, but my concern is real as I've spent over 40 years in administration of Budgerigar Clubs.
