New Baby
Hi Correct me if I am wrong but is YF T1 where the head is just yellow and YF T2 where the yellow moves down onto the birds chest etc. If so then I believe she maybe a YF T2 as the blue on her chest has patches of yellow the same as her back, if you look real close at the first photo you can see a spot of yellow just above her far wing. Cheers Anne marie

Quick Question
The first egg is due to hatch around 10 july. She just laid the fourth one today and is now spending quite alot of time in the box. Yes the cage is now in the avairy and as I was having troubles with leo I decided to cage the other birds and put Leo back with her boyfriend and into the avairy also in a cage. So basically all birds are in the avairy but in cages. How sad to see them like that but Budge and Sky really stuffed up my grand plans and I couldn't leave the quails completely alone. The front of the avairy has a blind that I can pull down to stop any wind and what not and as it is winter I have been adding a blanket to cover their cage and then covering the avairy. Hopefully this will be enough. No frosts yet thank goodness. PS Is there a way to tell if the eggs are being kept warm enough?

Bad Behaviour
She was fine as a baby with two other birds in the same cage. As she was a biter though we decided she might do better in the avairy, after placing her there (no nestboxes) she became a whole lot worse and she'd fly from perch to perch having a go at everyone. When I brought Blizzard I noticed that he was the only one she didn't pick on and they have since become quite the friends. The others male and female she's just a bully. None of the other birds have ever bickered or fought with each other. I have actually considered selling her as I really don't like the way she is so mean all the time. All other birds will handfeed including my two boys who were over one year and extremely shy when I got them. Leo was about 6 to 7 weeks and the only baby out of 3 that I couldn't handle due to all her biting, still can't handfeed her.

Quick Question
I saw only one person say YF and all others said opaline cinnamon grey green not yellowface. I would say not YF. Why did you choose that pairing ? My I ask if this would be a bad pairing for colour? I was considering changing pairs and have Blizzard paired with Sky (after chicks and in summer) hoping with their colours I should get something nice, then I was going to pair my two greens not sure on that one. Can anyone give me a run down all their colours just so I know. Cheers Anne Marie

Cabbage
Thanks for the replies. I think it is good to know these sorts of things as in the case of cabbage if one day you decide hey instead of giving this to the dogs I'll give it to the birds you would know whether it is actually okay for them or not. So thanks again.

Bad Behaviour
Hi Not sure if this is the right spot to post this question or not, but one of my birds has a very bad temper. She has constantly been a biter from the day I brought her home and now she is extremely aggressive toward the other female budgies. She no longer has contact with them. I was curious to know if she was to have any chicks would her behaviour became more aggresive and would/could she pass this behaviour on? Anne Marie

All Bout Me
Well i own 6 budgies was 8 until my little boy let two out of their cage as I was coming inside. I own 3 dogs, 2 horses, a couple of rainbows, quails and finches. I have 3 kids 4 if you count the husband. I joined this forum in the hope of learning more about breeding budgies and well I have to admit I know more now then I did 12mths ago. Was reading all the posts and what not before I registered. Still having problems with colours though. Not much else special about me, just a great love for animals but I will be brave and admit that sadly the budgies come in at number 2 behind my horses..

Quick Question
The only room I have would be my closet. A little too dark I think for their liking. I have sat down and considered alot of places that I could put them but taking into account the cats and my children (one is 2yrs who likes to run around the house opening and closing doors all the time), well not many places would keep them safe. Where they are now I know there are now draughts and they get covered at night to help keep them that little bit warmer. It's just always a worry as we all know how quickly the weather can go from cool to cold overnight. I actually thought maybe I could put a little blanket of some sort in there but then maybe the eggs would too hot, I really don't know. The oats I have are Lowan Whole foods Wholegrain rolled oats. Will this be suitable? What would I do if she decides that she doesn't like them?

Quick Question
Unfortunately on two notes I didn't think about nesting materials until after I put the eggs into the nestbox, and I can't bring the birds inside as we are looking after a couple of cats for a friend and they personally are mean looking things that I wouldn't want anywhere near my birds. I do have some wood shavings like you get for rabbits and I was looking at putting that in after the chicks hatched, but I'm starting to rethink a lot of things. Do you think I could put porridge oats in now without touching the eggs? I have some oats in the freezer (will defrost them first) Seriously this was not the plan, there were no nestboxes in the avairy but she made her own nest in the plant and I honestly thought they were both going out of breeding condition, guess I was wrong.

Quick Question
I didn't have any nestboxes in the avairy. Budge and Cloud are 08 babies, Rain and Sky are Jan 09 babies and Leo and Blizzard are mid 09 babies. All in all none of them are now under 12 months. They have all been together quite happy since october last year and its only recently that sky decided to lay some eggs. Hence why I put her and Budge into a cage with a nestbox. Seeing as it is winter though is there anyway of helping Sky keep the chicks (when they hatch) warmer? Don't want any of them freezing on me..

Quick Question
I have six budgies in an avairy, they chose themselves. I figured let them breed at least once and see what the outcome is. I really want to try and breed violets but this is looking far harder then I originally thought. At the moment it is more experimenting and trying to learn the colours and markings etc. Sky started to lay some eggs in one of the plants I have in the avairy and after laying two I have given her and Budge a cage with a nest box where she has laid the third egg this morning. I know its not the best time but I figured if she was laying without a box then giving them a box was the safer option.... I apologise as well for saying everyone said Leo was a YF. I only did a quick scan through and noticed YF come up a couple of times I didn't actually read any of it..

Quick Question
That's a mouthful and a half. He is paired with a YF grey/green cinnamon opaline, which is one of my original birds I had when I joined this forum. That is what everybody said she was anyways.

Quick Question
okay so if I was to say what colours my birds are I would have a skyblue spangle hen, a grey spangle cock, an olive opaline cock? and a normal dark green hen? I have absolutly no idea of colours as the two greens are completely different to what I thought they were. I also have another budgie and he is completely white with extremely light blue patches around his chest. What colour would he be? Blizzard: Anne Marie

Cabbage
Don't get me wrong, my birds enjoy a variety of fruit and veggies. Their favourite would actually be apple, they'll eat this over anything else. I was just wondering about the lettuce. As I said my kids like feeding them lettuce and I wanted to make sure that this wasn't going to harm the birds. I am not that silly to think the lettuce would kill my birds otherwise they would have died ages ago. How about cabbage again it was just something I haven't given them but would a little now and then be okay for them. Anne Marie

Cabbage
I was only asking as there was a time there I had left over cabbage and I was going to save it to give to the budgies but was unsure if they could eat it. Silly me googled and the responses was fairly even toward yes and no. As for the lettuce well my kids thoroughly enjoy hand feeding all my birds with lettuce and the birds can't get enough of it, until a woman at a local pet store said that lettuce could kill them. Haven't heard that from anyone else. Anyways I just thought I'd ask cause the kids sit next to the aviary and munch away on bits of lettuce whilst poking bits through to birds trying to get out and I would hate to have to take away their bonding time. Quick Question
okay after stacks of photos I managed to get one of Rain. Not the best, had to use flash as it is starting to get dark out, and please don't mind her wing, as is evident in last photo of her as well she had an accident as a young bird and now is unable to tuck her wing. Can still fly good though. Don't the Violet patches on the cheeks indicate that they have a violet background? This is what I was always thinking anyway? Anne Marie

Quick Question
okay my bad, on closer inspection I would say Budge's tail was very dark blue to black, managed some photos, budge was very unimpressed I'll try later and get one of Rain, unfortunately she is an extremely skittish bird and never sits still for me. Anne Marie

Quick Question
Just ran down to try and get a photo for you but silly bird wouldn't show me his bum long enough to get a photo. It seems to me to be extremely dark green almost black looking.

Cabbage
Hi Just curious as to whether budgies can eat raw cabbage, also I know iceberg lettuce isn't nutritionally good for them but what about other types of lettuce? Cheers Anne Marie
-
Quick Question
Hi I honestly never noticed the colour of Budge until now. He isn't as dark as I thought, looking at him last night I would say he was a light olive colour, my other green budgie Rain defiently is green, the photo of her didn't show that but she is a much darker green than Budge. Would opaline cause any differences in the offspring than if there was no opaline? Obviously I am sure I would expect some of the babies to be opaline but would it impact on gender or colour etc? Hope that is not too confusing. Anne Marie

Quick Question
okay here is hoping this works. first pair Budge: Sky: second pair Cloud: Rain: Anne marie

Quick Question
Hi Thanks for replying. I have read so much on the genetic thing and I still can't wrap my head around it all. okay, my boy well he is visually dark green with violet patches on his cheeks. I was told by a friend of the son of the breeder (confusing sorry) that his mother was a violet. As for my other female whom I think maybe a violet, well she has the same violet patches on her cheeks but visually she looks to be violet. I didn't think this was possible in greens only in the blues. My skyblue is unmistakable in colour as is my grey and they are both spangles this I am sure as I love the spangles and its about the only type of wing markings that I am sure of. I will keep researching and hopefully one day it will all fall into place. Again thank you Anne Marie
