  1. Hi All! This is one of my boys I bred last year. It was my first pairing from a Cin. Grey-Green Rec. Pied hen X Cinnamon Grey cock. This boy is split rec. pied and is a grey-green cinnamon. He has moulted out nice, but because I am fairly new to this, do you think he is worth keeping? And I am considering putting him to this hen: This is also one of his siblings. He had another grey-green cinnamon and grey cinnamon sibling, but they have been given to one of my friends for her pet-line. I kept this boy back because as a fledgling he presented unusual markings, and he has moulted out again quite different. Younger: Now:
  2. Hi All! I was at this auction and was pretty happy with the 3 birds I got! One of my friends won some rare mutations awards, so she was pretty happy also. I didn't see CW or Libby, not that I would have recognised you .
  3. Cool! So when hand-feeding a chick, what would be the approximate amount to give them? At about fledgling age?
  4. Just out of curiousity, how large is a budgies crop? How much liquid/food can they hold in it?
  5. Sorry, half hour turned intoo 3 days They have now been moved to the weaning cage and are perching okay. Oh yeh, and don't mind the red fingernails Oldest [Light Green Opaline Cinnamon] 2nd Oldest [single chick. Cobalt normal] 3rd Oldest [ Sky Blue Cinnamon Opaline ]
  6. Sorry guys, I have been away for the last week or two. When I got back, I was VERY excited. In the oldest three's nest ( 2 fostered from green cinnamon pair) I have the two fostered chicks : Light Green Cinnamon Opaline split blue (I think) and a Sky Blue Cinnamon Opaline. The one chick from the blue/green pair is a cobalt (or mauve) normal, split opaline and cinnamon (I think) . In the green cinnamons nest, her other two chicks are: Sky Blue Cinnamon Opaline and Light Green Cinnamon (split oplaine I think). Their 6th chick died the other day, parents weren't feeding and when I got back it was very skinny. I assume seomthign was wrong, and it was at a stage where I couldn't afford (time) to hand-rear. Pictures in half hour or so
  7. Thankyou all. I am looking to breed YF Blue Cinnamons and YF Blue's , so this pair is great for my stock
  8. I have posted a previous picture, but I have chosen a new one and I wish to submit this instead:
  9. okay, I promise for a turtorial. I am gonna have my work cut out, 15 bubs to rear

  14. Thanks guys, the TCB hen has a bit of flecking but the boys will fix that up. Also her cheek patches.

  16. Hi! Went to a guy's place today, he is going out of showing because of other commitments. I got some ripper birds their, I went through my aviary and did a head count ( 17 black/red/green rings and 16 blues) And paired up the new stock. Just some pictures 1- Grey Opaline TCB Hen This girl is a sweety, red ring. Going to the yellow cock on the left. 2- YF Blue Hen She is a very nice bird, I have big plans for her. She has a brown cere it it is peeling, which is why you can see a bit of blue. Red ring. 3- YF Blue Cinnamon Cock .... :camera: woah. I am in love with a bird! In my new line of YF Blue cinnamons, he is gonna be a foundation. I love him to bits already This one needs a name, any suggestions?? Why can't I just find the perfect hen? -.- Red ring. Hope you enjoyed Also, he still has some nice birds availible if anyone is interested, Please PM. Adelaide.
  17. Very gorgeous. I actually never knew about the YF gene, so that helps as I am supposedly breeding YF's. I went out a bought a YF Cinnamon Blue cock, very pretty. You are lucking to get such a variety :camera:
  18. I double the above agreement. They will dissepear, or the bird is just poorly marked
  19. Sure! Thanks for the idea guys. I have different setups then most breeders I know, so I hope it will help. The two clutches have only just hatched, and I remove my birds when they are on two feeds a day, so it will be a couple weeks yet, I hope that is okay
  20. Sure! I would add that in, but I can't edit the post. I am gonna hand-rear two clutchs of pet-types in about 2-3 weeks, so I will take photos and a step by step guide then if you want. I will also explain it more and about the stuff I use The reason I was uncertain to say about the crop-needles is because you should only be using one if you know how to, and if you know how to you should know what gauge to be using. I tried not to make it to lengthy also, as I know some people may not like to read lots of text.
  21. Hi! I hope that this helps some members that either hand-rear of wish to hand-rear their birds. The topics in this thread may not be how you personally do it, but it may help others. In the case that you do need to raise chicks, either for pets or because the parents rejected them, here is a quick guide I created Setup The set-up of a hand-rearing cage is important. A bird must have comfort, correct temperature and not be exposed to hazardous objects. I personally cover my birds takn with a towel, to keep it dark. I keep my birds in an old fish tank (which I really need to upgarde lol ) but I also know some breeders that keep their birds in Jewelry Stoarge type units. My tank is about 30cm long, and about 20cm wide. I also place a small soft toy in there for the bird, especially if it is alone. This forms firstly, an object that can contain heat to warm them and secondly in a nest, chicks huddle together for comfort. A storage unit some people use when raising numerous chicks. You can also buy a brooder especially made A picture of one of my budgies snuggling up to his 'rabbit' [ picture coming, I need to get it from other computer ] Step-By-Step Guide to a Proper Setup 1. Lay down a towel on the table/bench you are keeping the tank. 2. Lay the heating pad on top of the first towel if you are using a heating pad 3. Place another towel on top of the heating pad (if you are using one) 4. Place cage/tank on top. 5. Wrap a towel around half of the cage and secure with pegs or clips (this is to keep the tank/cage dark and to keep the heat in) 6. Place soft toy, thermometer, perches and towels or newspaper in the cage 7. Activate heating and slowly warm up the chick. Another towel should be placed over the cage (that can be removed for feeding/cleaning and when the chick gets older) Heating Heating for baby birds is important. You need to have the correct brroder temperature for the bird's species and age. Some for of round-the-clock heating must be provided. This can be done by a heat lamp, brooder temperature control and a heating pad plus more. An incubator needs to be kept in the tank so you can record note the heating is working, and keep it stable. Feeding Here is a list of things you will need to feed the chicks - Hand-Rearing Formula for that breed - Syringes (and crop needles if you choose to use them) for feeding - Measuring Spoons to meausre parts. - Thermometer to make sure the food is correct temperaturre - a damp cloth or paper towels to clean up - set of scales to record the weight daily - a bowl to make up feed I hope that this has helped new/older members! I would like to say again, I personally do this and other members may not encourage or agree with the set-up and routine I use.
  22. I personally agree that it would be worthwhile investigating about it. I have The Standard, but I knwo some members on here don't and it helped me alot before I got it.
  23. Because I am around your age, and I have only just been through the process within the last year, feel free to ask questions. Like GB said, Joining a club and sorting thorugh varieties helps. Also learning about genetics and mutations will help, as I saw you were a bit confused in you lutino thread.
  24. Thanks Kaz! I was a little worried there *lets out breath*
