  1. I so feel for you trying to do your best - sometimes the Dad as a surviver will do a great job at teaching the babies how to eat. You say you're using 'egg & biscuit' - be careful about this because some brands are full of sugars and *** whereas babies need protein. There are some good products available, I get a lot of stuff from www.wildlifesupplies.com.au here in QLD. I've had to hand-rear lots of birds with syringe or crop needle feedings. I'm currenlty caring for a sick bird on a "First Aid" for birds formula. Good luck and even if it ends with fatalities hopefully, though sadly, wisdom will be gained. Hi Folks Time flies and it has been two months since my last post. Feels like I am confessing Hahahahahahahahha Dad and all the babies are doing fine. I will take some photos of them all and post them. We must have done something right. My wife was terrified of birds before this happened but she helped with the feeds and has a favorite of her own now and even handles them. Even lets the cocatiel sit on her shoulder. .
  2. we need to make up printed t-shirts to advertise the forum... That would be a great way to advertise amongst current budgie enthusists... Maybe we could make that a comp on here, 2010 design for tops. thats a pretty good idea jimmy banks a forum tee I am a member of another forum. I printed a forum logo on an A4 sheet with photoshop. Lots of prints on one sheet and laminated it. Cut out individual ones and pinned them on with a safety pin. It was a great success. You just need a logo and make you own badge. .
  3. Thanks Guys. I had already done most of that sugested. And as I said Hindsight is 20/20. Dad has started feeding the youngest two and they have all started on seed. I put all the chics in the nest box and they seen to be going okay. Tomorrow will tell but they are all tucked up nice and warm together tonight. The fresh veggies will be the go tomorrow and suppliment with the egg and biscuit mix. Will keep all posted and put on some pics of the survivers.. I put this on to warn any other newbies out there. .
  4. I have two pairs in the cage which is approx 1 metre x 1.2 long. I had a hen with with 4 babies aprox 1 week from youngest to oldest. No dramas between any of the birds until the second bub came out of the nest. This morming I heard a comotion in the budgie cage. The other hen had mum pinned on the floor or the cage. There was blood everywhere. I immediatly got mum and the chic out of the cage. The chic on the cage floor had been attacked and so had one in the nest. I did all I could for mum but she had big holes in underbelly on her back and over her beak. (She didn't last long) I now have the young and dad in a small cage inside the house. They all seem to be going fine and I have been feeding the two youngest chicks Egg and breadcrumb mix. I know hindsight is 20/20 and I should have taken out the other pair but everything was going fine. Needless to say I don't have the other hen anymore. Phil.

I have 2 new chicks in the nest and 3 unhatched eggs. Dad is a fellow face grey and mum is a yellow faced blue. I don't know what their parentage is. A couple of ?. The older chick is 3 days and onother hatched this morning. I presume mum is feeding them as they are still kicking and the older one is twice the size of the new one. What do I look out for? Is it advisable to touch the chicks at this stage. Mum was tame and is easily handled and seems really dedicated. I am just winging it at the moment. We are pretty excited though. .

Thanks Renee for the reply. I am still figuring out my way about this site. I found and am readindg all the stuff you suggested. Still a lot to learn. I have the new cock in a cage with the hen and no breeding box. I let them out for a fly around the house. Should I keep them in separate cages to stop any shenanigans or will the hen produce eggs without them? .

I havn't bred a budgie for 30 years and then I had 15 birds in an aviary and they did their own thing. You said that they might not be in breeding condition. More information please? I am dumb (or smart) enough to ask questions I went to a Budgie society show at Kariong on Sunday run by the Central coast and Newcastle Budgie clubs. I bought another bird. A yellow faced grey cock, this years stock, as a companion for my yellow faced blue hen (my avatar). .

Boxes seem to be okay. The birds happily go to them and even perch there at night. They just don't seem to bond. I have another hen. Is it worth putting it in with them or will that create more problems. I am beginning to think that the cock is gay. LOL .

The cage is approx 1 metre wide 60cm" high and 45 deep. I have two boxes in the RH end fitted externally and at the top of the cage. I will try and get a picture of it. .

I have 2 birds. An olive green cock and a blue hen both about 18 months old and different stock. They seem friendly enough and seem slightly interested in the nest boxes. I have two boxes in the cage. There don't seem to be any signs of wanting to breed. Why?
  16. Thanks Kaz. I think I have it Sussed now. It's a bit long winded but I got there. I was halfway through and my machine shut down. I initially thought this was a cock. Not so sure now. How old is it and what are the colour variations of this bird? Phil.
  17. Hi Folks. I had a budgie fly into my sons yard. One of his mates threw a t shirt over it and caught it. It was really hungry and is in a quarantine cage at the moment. It seems to be a young bird and is resonably tame. It will readilly sit on my finger and sit on my shoulder. I initially thought it to be a cock but in a week its cere is changing to brown. I have tried to post a picture but havn't had much sucess. Can someone tell me how to upload a Jpeg file. .

How did it work out? Did you mix them. If not send me a message and we may be able to give them a home. Phil
  19. Thanks for the advice. She is in a separate cage and will chase up a vet asap. .Phil
  20. Hi Folks I have only now registered on the site and have had budgies on and off for a long time. I have had a male budgie for about 12 months and being a little older and aviary bred I decided to get a hen to keep him company with a view to breeding a young un to train. The hen was a pretty white and blue young bird and after a week she was looking healthy and I put her in the cage with the cock. About 6 months ago. He seemed very domineering and she seemed to become very submissive and sat with her head to one side. She seemed to be getting weaker and I removed her from the large cage. She was sitting on the cage floor all the time so I put a 2 inch round branch for her to perch on. She is eating and drinking okay but sits with her head nearly upside down and can't fly very well when I get her out of the cage. Her head will turn up the right way and she is constantly rubbing her head on the perch. I initially thought she was just very submissive but then thought she may have had a stroke. Any one have any ideas. PHIL
