Everyone has a right to their own opinion, I agree... What I don't agree with is the name calling.. especially over something that you obviously haven't heard much about or know about.... Like I said before, people also argue that harnesses are dangerous for birds.... so why do people use them? Because they feel that it is a safe way for them to transport their birds from one place to another (be it short or long distances). A flightsuit works very much the same way as a harness with regards to a leash being attached to it... it is to ensure that a bird does not "fly" away or get spooked away... it just has the added bonus of containing poop. It doesn't stop them from pooping naturally or inhibit their flying. Some people enjoy being able to have their bird with them wherever they go... car rides, trips to the market etc..... There are also people who just don't like poop dropping everywhere in their houses/ on clothes etc..... Yes, it's not "that much" of a hassle to clean up after them, but if they are going to be out for free flight for a few hours everyday why not just keep that interaction with you "poop free" without causing any harm to them... people train their birds to poop on command/ before they come out of the cage etc... Why don't you call those people stupid for stopping their birds from doing what is natural (ie:pooping freely)? I currently don't own a budgie but fully intend on using a flightsuit for it's free flight time when I get one..... Everyone's entitled to their own opinions... this is mine...

..... The flightsuit does not leave a bird's vent area dirty and messy... the collection pouch is held away from a bird's vent area...I think if you were to go and see the videos and do more research on flightsuits you wouldn't be so quick to judge the people who invented it or use it..........Some people argue that harnesses are also dangerous for birds....................I agree with Kaz about them not being able to preen themselves, but the birds are not meant to be kept in a flightsuit for "long" periods of time anyway..... it is recommended that the filghtsuit's liner be changed every 3-4 hours AT LEAST....A flightsuit with a leash on protects your birds from flying away just like a harness does......And just like every other thing we use on/with/around our birds... the flightsuits need to be gradually introducesd o them so that they are accustomed to it...........I think that more research and reading needs to be done before you judge a particular product and the people who created them and use them................................... http://www.pamperedpeeps.com/flightsuitventinfection.htm Video that shows a flightsuit leaving the vent area clean......
  4. Hi, I know this is kind of off track but I noticed this bird, one of omelette's young... I notice it has flecking on its head and doesn't have any cheek patches... Is this "special"?... I find it so beautiful though.... Sorry for my lack of knowledge....
  5. Hi Kaz, Did you determine that through the photos or the description that I gave about her cere now? What about the younger budgie? Would you please be able to confirm it's gender for me? Thank you very much.
  6. Hi, I think I have a pretty good idea of the sexes of these two but would like a definite confirmation. The older one now has quite a distinctive blue tinge to its cere with clear white rings around it while the younger one still has the even shade of pink. These photos are of when they are roughly 3 weeks old. They are about 5 weeks now. Thank you very much in advance Photos are without flash. 7. Hi Sailorwolf I have less concerns for myself as being an adult, we have better immune systems compared to a baby, with the fact that we're healthy of course.. And I noticed you're in NZ, and since you're currently obtaining your vet degree you must be in PN Am I right to say that this is the only place in NZ that has an avian vet??... As that is what I have heard.... I did try searching for avian vets in my area (Hams) but I haven't been able to find any.....
  8. Yes, I totally agree on the building up of resistance  That's why I'm not too worried about my son putting things into his mouth.... I just thought I'd voice my concerns and ask....... Never any harm in asking, right? And always better to be informed.... Thank you Kaz  Sorry if I sounded paranoid.... I'm a first time mum wanting to do everything right Being careful never hurt..... Plus I'd be tremendously upset if I had to rehome Budgie now...... He's such a cutie....
  9. Thanks Kaz, for your thoughts... It does help... I did notice that the members that have budgies that are currently sick are breeders.... Should I still be extremely careful with whatever Budgie touches though? ie: Not let my son touch it; make sure I disinfect it; always wash hands after touching Budgie, before touching my son... etc?.... Budgie is allowed out of his cage anywhere from 3 to 5 hours a day as I am home most of the time and am constantly with my son... This however, does mean that he does poop around the house... but I go around looking out for poop and cleaning them up immediately.... And Budgie is very often on my shoulder during his "out of cage" moments as he demands just as much attention from me as my son does! My son is at the "everything looks good to eat" stage at the moment which means that he puts everything and anything that he can get his hands on into his mouth....... This is why I am so concerned as my son getting sick is the last thing I want.......... He mouths my shoulders quite often and if Budgie has been sitting there.......... I'm afraid of whatever diseases he might pass to my son........ I'm not a clean freak and I feel that my son does need to be exposed to certain bacteria and viruses from time to time.... as I know this is better for him than him living in a disinfected environment....... I however just don't want to be putting him at unnecessary risk........... My son is my most precious thing in the world.........
  10. I realise lately that several members have birds which are sick... Which has led me to think: 1) What are the chances of a single pet budgie passing on disease/ sicknesses to us humans? 2) What sort of diseases/ sicknesses CAN be passed to humans? I've recently seen in the posts the diseases psitticosis and coccidiosis..... 3) Are there precautions I should be taking seeing that I have a baby in the family? I've just started to question my decision on bringing in a new pet (especially one I'm new at with knowledge) into our home when I have a 6 month old son............ I love animals...... and I try my very best to give my all to every new pet..... but at the end of the day my son is number one.......... I would really appreciate it if everyone gave their thoughts about this as I am really starting to worry.............

I just googled "kauri pine" and they look the same.... although there was something else called black kauri pine that looked different. I didn't know that there are different names for Kauri. Thank you for that. I think that Kauri pine (or Agathis australis) is the one that I'm trying to find out about.

Hi, I don't know how many of you will know what a Kauri tree is... but I thought I'd just try asking. The Kauri is a native New Zealand plant and I haven't been able to find anything about it being toxic to budgies as I don't think it's very well known. Would anyone please be able to tell me if you know if it's toxics to budgies? Thank you....

Hi all =D Thank you very much for the warm welcome It's great getting such a warm reception It's nice to know that Budgie is a goldenface.... however, after doing some research about the difference between yellowfaces (type I and II) and goldenface, I have thoroughly confused myself! Haha.... I think I'll just leave the genetics to the experts I must say though that I'm not sure if Budgie is a mauve as I can't seem to make out the olive tinge that Elly can see.... Sorry.... could it be that maybe he was sitting in some shadows that he looks darker than normal? Especially after seeing some pictures of olive budgies... ( So pretty....) I'll post a couple more photos and maybe that can clear up Budgie's colour It'll be great to know if everyone else agrees with Elly on Budgie's mutation As I'm very keen to know the "right" name for his colouration ^^ Once again, thank you for the fabulous welcome! Hi CaspersRose:) Thank you for the tip about nibbling. I was wondering, do I just do it for every nibble even if it's not that hard or just when it hurts? As I quite like him nibbling... just not when it hurts :hi: Yes, Kaz! That was the other question I forgot to ask... I was told that he is an English budgie rather than a pet sized one. I'm wondering, do you think he a cross between a pet budgie and an English budgie rather than a full English budgie? As I noticed that his head isn't as poofy as pictures of English budgies that I've seen. Or could this just be that he is young? Also, should I expect him to grow much more if he is an English budgie? What is their full grown lenght? Thank you!:fear

Hi :hi: I'm Phylicia and I'm new to this site  I must say that this forum is one of the best on the internet.. This is where I did most of my research regarding budgies before I purchased one. My family just got a little budgie about 5 days ago and he seems to be fitting in well :fear He's a handreared one so is very tame and loves sunggling and cuddles. This post is just to say hi and introduce ourselves Our budgie's name is Budgie (very original I know Haha..) and I think he's a cobalt blue and a yellow face type II?? That is why he's green? Am I right? If you could please confirm his colouration for me that would be fantastic And I'm also pretty sure he's a boy because he doesn't have white rings around his nostrils on his cere.. He's currently 7 weeks old Budgie nibbles quite abit. And there are times when it's quite hard. I was just wondering if this is normal... I read somewhere (might not have been on this site) that budgies nibble to tell you that they want something. Is this true? I was also wondering if there was a way for me to stop him from nibbling quite so hard as I'm just concerned that he might accidentally nibble my 6 month old son's fingers. My son has never been allowed to touch the budgie and vice versa but I'd just like to be careful I don't want either to get hurt Here's a couple of photos of Budgie: "> ">
