  1. Hi Sweetcakes, welcome to the forum! You have come to the right place to learn all about budgies, and breeding them. I would start with the FAQs section, and then scroll through the Budgerigar Breeding and Health sections. There is a whole lot more to breeding budgies than meets the eye, and if you have caught the bug, you will find it all fascinating reading!

Hi Brill! I'll say "Hi" and "Welcome" here, since I didn't in your other thread. Looking forward to seeing more of your birds, now that you have the photo thing worked out.
  3. My olive green recessive pied cinnamon cock named Mystery has six chicks with Nelly, who is a sky blue opaline greywing. So I was expecting to see some plum eyes in the nest, but there were none. I guess there is always the possibility that all six chicks are boys, but that seems a little unlikely to me. So I'm beginning to doubt if Mystery is in fact cinnamon after all. If he's not cinnamon, then he must be greywing. In that case, there can be no normal chicks in the nest, they would all be greywing. But as these chicks are getting their pin feathers, I think that some of them look like normals. I guess I should just be patient and wait, because obviously, whether they are normal or greywing will become apparent soon. But I just wanted to know if anyone can tell at this young age whether a chick is greywing. So here are some photos: Chick #1, 16 days old: Chick #3, 15 days old: Chick #4, 14 days old: Chick #5, 12 days old: Oh, and I guess it would be a good idea to include some photos of Mystery. And from when he was younger, when I first got him:
  4. Hi Ralph, welcome to the forum. I'm not sure what you are asking here. Blue budgies come in 3 levels of dark factor. Sky blue is when there is NO dark factor, cobalt is when there is ONE dark factor, and mauve is when there are TWO dark factors. (The dark factor is a gene that darkens the color of the body.) The violet factor can enhance the main color of the budgie. When it is present on a sky blue, it can make the sky blue appear cobalt. When it is present on a cobalt, it looks violet, but when it is present on a mauve, it can be hard to see any difference. As far as how to achieve the different mutations you asked about, you basically have to start with birds who have those mutations, and breed them together. I've read on here before where someone adivised that if you are interested in getting involved with show budgies, to try to start with good quality birds of any color, and breed with those while you are learning, and then to focus on a specific color or mutation later, after you have some experience. I hope you have fun with the hobby. They say it is addicting! LOL, GB, you must have been posting while I was! I saw that no one had replied to Ralph in 8 hours, so I thought I would give it a try.
  5. Hey, Ratzy, Happy Birthday! ">
  6. BUMP BUMP Wanted to bump this, due to the recent interest in dilutes and suffused budgies. Sadly, the original pictures of the bird in question are gone, but if you skip to the end, Nubbly has some good examples of Black Eyed Selfs.
  7. I would think that trying to heat the cage from underneath would be useless,. Your budgie is going to perch up high, and any warmth on the floor of the cage will not reach to the perch. You were given good answers to the heat issue in your other post, where people told you to use a warm lamp.
  8. Just thought I'd put a link over to where the photos are, for whoever might read this. topic with photos
  9. I'm wondering if maybe four of them are normal size, and one of them is giant size. Do you have a photo?
  10. Maddy, I'm very, very sorry for your loss of Gloria.
  11. Congratulations, Splat, this is great!
  12. KM, maybe you are thinking of how they can fight if they are in a colony breeding situation. When I keep females together, they get a long just fine, bonding, and preening each other.
  13. I feel your pain, GB. I HATE when that happens. (And for some reason, it happens to me a lot! ) Oh, and sorry about you losing your cock. But congratulations on your show placements!
  14. she is but how can you tell that? LOL! I thought GB was joking about the dom pied, seeing as how the pink mineral came off unevenly, like pied markings! If you were to put her to a greywing male, and a normal came out, you would know she was only SPLIT to greywing. If they produced a LOT of greywing babies with none normal, then you could make a decent assumption that she might actually be greywing instead of split to it. Same goes for if you put her to a recessive pied male.
  15. I've also heard it mentioned to look for people in your area who have outdoor aviaries, because stray pet birds will be attracted to the birds inside of them. Good luck with your search.

:D Yay! Hi K! Glad you're here. I never thought we would get anyone else from my neck of the woods on here! Now if only we could find that gal I met in the pet store. The one who I gave my card to, and told her about this forum, and then a little bit later she was quoting Kaz, and I said "Hey, that's the same forum I was telling you about!"
  17. Oh Splat! I can just picture you there jumping around screaming! I really do feel bad for your mouse problem, though. I hope it gets better now.
  18. We don't get bored by pictures!! This is your journal, so go ahead and put whatever you want in. The more pictures, the better. It makes it a great record to look back on later, and see how your chicks changed from day to day. They are looking really good, too, by the way. And GB, I love your input. It makes me go back and forth to the photos to see if I can pick out what you are seeing. It's very educational. I can't wait to see how those pied markings on chicks #3 &4 come out eventually!
  19. Just keep trying, it might take a long time before he gets up the nerve to try something new, but they usually do, eventually. I'm going to go search for some links for you about what other people have tried... Fussy Eaters Fresh Food Problem A Corn Topic, but it goes on to talk about other veggies, too. Should have put this one first, it's from the FAQs, lol! Hope these help. Just be encouraged, budgies are quite curious, and they like to play with things, so sooner or later they are going to take a chomp at something!
  20. That sounds like it must have been quite a story, and I'm not going to ask for details but I wanted to say, it sounds like you have a great mentor, and I'm glad you got your hen back!
  21. That is hilarious! At least he seems pretty agile.
  22. Well now, these are great cere shots of him! I don't think I mentioned before how pretty they all are!
  23. Well, if Gabriel is truly dilute, then all of his chicks will be split to dilute, but it won't show up unless you breed him to a hen who is also dilute or /dilute. So apparently his current hen must be /dilute, if that's what the chick ends up being. Maybe you should take another look at the siblings to this chick. If the mom is a normal/dilute, then all of the other "greywing" babies from this pair would have to be dilute, not greywing. I'm not good at telling the difference between the types of greywings. Maybe others can tell if the dad and siblings of this chick look like dilute rather than greywing.
