Bad Pet Shop...
That's not normal for happy finches. But petshops often have too many birds for the cages and they will pluck each other if they are overcrowded or if they have several species together that might not get on. With what she said about it being the season is kind of true, some species of finches might be more aggressive when it's breeding time, but again if they had enough space it wouldn't be a problem. Sorry, but it really annoys me when people put them in tiny cages just because they are small.

Cage Questions
That's a nice cage. Maybe you could have a natural branch perch as well as dowel, it's good for the budgie's feet to have variety. I've never had a clipped bird so I don't know about that, but there's a pinned post about it in this section.

Budgie Pictures
Thanks. I have 12 budgies altogether in these pictures there are 6. Getting your new budgie will be exciting, they're extra cute when they're young.

Possessive Budgie
Thanks guys, I didn't do anything different with her. I got her at the same time as one other budgie who I think is her sister and did the same taming type stuff with both of them while they were in quarantine. Her sister will sit on my hand only if I've got some food in it or occasionally she might sit on my shoulder for awhile but she's not nearly as tame. Is there a way discourage her a bit? I like having a really tame bird in the aviary but I'd like the others to be able to land on me without being chased away. Will she get less possessive when she's out of breeding condition again?

Budgie Pictures
Here are a few more photos some of these aren't so good. Also does anyone know what those stars mean near the title? Some backs. Headless budgie. I like how their wings look when they're outstretched, you can see the yellow through her feathers she seems greener in just a few weeks. A few more flying shots. An overexposed budgie on my hand. Three budgies

Possessive Budgie
Hi everyone, I'm having a problem with one of my budgies being possessive of my hands. She has always liked to be on my hands, tweeting and licking my fingers. But now she is chasing the other budgies away if they are near me and won't even let them be on the other hand. After she chases them she comes back and bites my fingernails hard, better than my fingers I suppose, but it's strange. Also she brings me bits of silverbeet which she likes to drop on my head, no other foods. She is roughly 7 months old and her cere is the brownest it has ever been. This picture of her is a few months old, when she was having her first moult

Billy And Grace
Congratulations on your egg. I'm not an expert but I think from this pair you will get opaline hens and normal boys split to opaline and they should all be greygreen, unless Billy is split for blue. Grace can't be split for blue because she is blue, grey counts as one of the blue colours. So if you get any blue or grey chicks that would mean Billy is split for blue.

My Other Birds
Thanks everyone. No, my quails have never laid eggs but they're both only about 9 months old so they might sometime. I love the turquoisines colours as well. Once I had a person who used to breed show budgies come and when she looked at my aviary from across the backyard she thought that I had a red budgie.

Budgie Pictures
Thanks everyone. By the way can anyone tell how old the YF spangle is? Ghazzigh did tell me but I forgot, do you think that is her first moult or second?

My Other Birds
Thanks, that photo is a bit blurry I focused on the bell instad of the birds but I put it up anyway.

My Other Birds
The zebra finches live in a cage inside, I wouldn't like to put them with budgies. The others all live together, they get on well especially all the boys. I've only ever had one problem with having them together. One of the budgie hens was jealous of the turquoisine girl and pecked her, she lost a couple of feathers from her back, I took the aggresive hen in for a few days then put her back and they've all been good since. The turquoisines behave like budgies except they are a little quieter it's just like having a couple of funny looking budgies in the flock behaviour wise if that makes sense.

My Other Birds
These are some photos of my birds other than budgies. There's two turquoisines, two quails and two zebra finches. The finches are hard to get a good photo of they won't keep still long enough, I have a few pictures of empty perches because I was too slow.

Budgie Pictures
Hi, these are some photos of my new budgies, who I got from another forum member Ghazzigh. They're all settling in well, though they weren't that impressed by the camera.

Quails
Hi, I had a similar problem, but I didn't want to swap to a drip bottle because my quails love to get in the water when it's hot. I swapped to using one of those covered bird baths that you are supposed to hook onto the outside of an indoor cage. My quails like it but the budgies don't want to go in it, because of the roof. You can get them from a petshop and for about $5. If you don't know what I mean you could probably google outside of cage birdbath.

Danish Pied And A Violet?
I think your bird is just confusing in general. He looks like a male recessive pied (the same as a danish one) but he has iris rings which recessive pieds don't, their eyes stay one solid colour. Iris rings develop on other budgie mutations when they're around 6 months old, see in the photo in Kaz's post the budgies don't have iris rings because they're still young. I hope that doesn't confuse you more.

Raspberry Vinegar
Thanks, that all makes more sense to me now. Yes the raspberry vinegar was about $8 for a 400ml bottle I'll keep it for people then.

Danish Pied And A Violet?
A danish pied and a recessive pied are just different names for the same variety. If it is a male recessive or danish pied it's cere would be a pink colour. In the picture the cere looks blue so it's possible you have a girl or it could be a dominant pied, does the bird have iris rings?

Raspberry Vinegar
I don't think there is lots of it around, I got it from a berry farm that has raspberry wines, vinegars and other different things as well as the normal jams and sauces.

Raspberry Vinegar
Hi, I've been reading through some old topics and found one about raspberry cordial being good for birds. I already give my birds apple cider vinegar but I have in my pantry some raspberry vinegar and I was wondering if that would be better for them? It's ingredients are raspberries, vinegar and sugar.

My Budgies' Mutations
Any answers?

My Budgies' Mutations
Thank you. So greywing is recessive except for with dilute is that right? Does that mean that Summer and Cloud can't be sisters because they are both a different recessive sort? Or would it be possible for instance if one of their parents was greywing split rec pied and one rec pied split greywing? Sorry about all the questions I'm trying to learn all that I can.

My Budgies' Mutations
Wow, thanks for all your replies. I've finally managed to get some more photos for you. I haven't got very good pictures of their backs though. Has anyone else noticed that when you want a picture of their face they'll only show you their back and the other way round. Here are a couple of Cloud the recessive pied. And Summer the possible greywing, you can't really see her tail feathers but they're the same yellowy, bluey grey colours as her wings. This is just a better picture of Briar's cere, the other picture did make him look a bit girly.

My Budgies' Mutations
Hi, I was wondering what my budgies' mutations are? I hope the pictures are okay. The green ones are brother and sister I'm pretty sure that she is opaline, but I don't know if he is because he looks kind of inbetween opaline and normal to me. These 2 blue ones are brothers, I think a recessive pied and a normal, the normal one has a little white spot on the back of his head does that mean he is split for recessive? This is a picture of their backs when they were younger. And these are my youngest 2 who are out of quarantine now and having their first moults, if you need better photos of them I can get some in the next day or two. I find them most confusing, one I think might be yellowface2 opaline greywing? The other I thought was dominant pied but the beak is orange so does that mean recessive? Also I'm not sure if she is greywing as well, she has a lot of wing markings which are darker than the one I think is greywing but lighter than the other budgies. I hope that makes sense. I don't know if these two are related.
