Please Help -- Father Budgie Has Died
Just to further add to Kaz's comment..... Put some seed into the corner of the nest box. This way the hen doesn't need to leave the chicks unprotected while she eats. Good luck with the vet trip

Need Some Help Please
I wouldn't be touching the eggs too much at this point. The one egg your not sure about may well be fertile and may hatch any day. For a first time hen, handling the eggs or even frequent looking in her box may stress her too much. I would only check the nest box briefly morning and night. If by the 28th ish day they don't hatch then think about removing the eggs if the hen hasn't already. As previously mentioned, some hens don't start incubating until the second or third egg is laid. Hope you find a baby hatched in the next few days.

Pied, But Which Type?
But what if the bird is a cock bird with one recessive gene and the one ino. I am guesing the ino is on a different allele so whilst the father passes on the ino gene, he has to pass something else on right? This is my point I = ino r = recessive Dad Mum II rr If they bred, and produced male that was Ir, what would it look like? The hens would all be Ino's, as the ino is sex linked, so in the above case, all the hens would be albinos, but what would the boys be. Not albinos, as they need two Ino's, and not recessive, as they need 2 receiisve genes. i am thinking the mauve normal is the Ir. Am I right? Yes you are right.... all males from this mating will be split ino's..... but don't forget the recessive gene from the dad also. They are on different alles (different parts of the genetic thread). It is quite possible that the father passes a recessive pied gene also (since he is split). Therefore .... the visually pied chicks from this mating will always be cocks, because all hen chicks will be visually ino's. And the norm chick is a cock split for ino & recessive pied.

Pied, But Which Type?
Great looking chicks! I always love mixed matings and their outcomes. I bet you were excited when they feathered up. Lucky you! Dave: let me try to answer your questions TO get recessive chicks, Dad has to be split recessive. Yes I agree So you bred a recessive pied grey hen to a YF2 Albino male masking recessive pied (He isn't really "masking" the pied gene :- He is split for pied (He has 1 recessive pied gene since the mating produced a visual norm) "Masking" indicates that if he wasn't ino then he would be visually pied, which in this case he wouldn't be and you have ended up with 1. YF2 Recessive pied grey (mauve) chick (cock) 2. YFS Cobalt Recessive pied chick (cock) 3. Albino Hen 4. Mauve normal (cock) This chick will be split for recessive pied (carrying 1 recessive pied gene) Here is my question. If you breed an albino male to a recessive pied, and the male chick gets the ino gene from Dad and the recessive pied chick from Mum, will it look recessive pied even though it only has one recessive pied gene? Which is dominant over the other? Since ino is sex linked, does that rule our the Ino look in this case, and since the recessive needs to 2 genes for dominance, what happens? To be a "visual" recessive pied the chick needs to have 2 recessive pied genes, however a bird with 2 recessive pied genes and the presence of the ino gene will look like an ino but "mask" the recessive markings. The parents genetics suggests that the ino chick could be masking 2 recessive pied genes. Mating of this chick with a recessive pied hen would tell this. But at the very least the albino chick is masking at least 1 pied gene

Day 1 To Day 42.
From my understanding, the cheek patches don't always show silver in grey greens, but a black tail is the best way to tell a grey from a normal. Great idea Pearce... will be watching this thread too!

Double Dom Pied Or Single Dom?
I always thought she is a spangle too. It might be harder to actually see clearly because she appears to be a opaline mauve also. So the mauve is blending slightly with the markings, But I thought the one large oval lined feather at the bottom was the clear give away, but "anchor" markings are a great way to see it too.

Worse Day Ever
My prayers are with you during this time AV. I know how hard it is to loose one, but multiple losses must be so emotionally draining. Hoping for better times to come your way very soon.

Double Dom Pied Or Single Dom?
I didn't realise the discussion this thread was going to take: Thanks Richo, "elegant" is the perfect description for her. Maybe I'll name her Elly. I also thought double factor spangle can mask other genectic factors just like ino. Like wearing a white trench coat.

Damn Neophobes!
Thats a great idea about putting greens beside their bath water. I hadn't thought of that myself. Mine do this too. However I sort of used this idea to introduce new foods into their diet. I cooked up some brown rice the other day, which I have never cooked for them before. I then placed a corn cob on top.... something they can't resist!!!!! Not many tried the rice.... but some did.

Double Dom Pied Or Single Dom?
Hi All. A recent first time hen of mine had a cluch of 3 eggs but only one hatched. I'm not complaining because it is a gorgeous baby girl, and of course I'm probably biased. The question however, is since the cock is a double factor spangle (with suffusion... almost violet, but probably just cobalt) and the hen is a dom pied spangle opaline mauve violet, I'm not really sure if the baby is a single dom pied or double dom pied. I suspect the cock could be a dom pied because his suffusion seems to have a clear band. Any ideas? Cock Hen Chick

April 2009 Budgie Of The Month Winner!
Thanks everyone! This little cutie was chick number 4 from my recent cinnamon violet clutch. She has turned out to be a very pretty dusty violet color (always very hard to get an acurate photograph of violets). The only way I could get her still for a photo was to put her in the seed dish. She looked so cute in there. (Especially in a little dog dish with cute little paw prints on it!)

Seeds
They'll probably prefer them green too!!!!

Buying A Budgie That Is Moulting
I use this method too. While my birds are on medication, I remove all drinking water overnight (everynight) and when you provide the drinking water with medications in it in the morning, they drink it straight up.

Buying A Budgie That Is Moulting
If the scaley face isn't too severe they will probably come out of the ivermectin treatment quite healthy. I would also think of doing meds for internal parisites while in quarantine. If the breeder didn't medicate for things he could see he probably didn't medicate for the ones he couldn't!

She Says Quarantine Is Dumb!
Sorry your mum got mad at you. I know slightly how you feel..... my husband doesn't like me taking my budgies to the vet....... he thinks its a waste of money. However when diseases can effect your whole flock, its worth taking a $30 budgie to the vet. People need to see the bigger picture! At least quarrantine doesn't cost anything!!! (Maybe you can tell your mum that LOL)

My White Face Chick Is Turning Yellow Face
Hey GB, can you post a picture of the parents? From what I can recall isn't the yellow face in the ino quite pale? Maybe this might have someting to do with it. PS By the way that chick is turning out pretty!
