  1. I've seen budgies do this too. Looks a little bit like they're about to regurgitate... and then they don't.
  2. Haha that photo really creeps me out for some reason
  3. Aww I'm so sorry :rip: Try not to think about the details, as hard as that is -- it's sad enough having the loss without thinking too much about what actually happened. It is quite normal for chicks to die in various ways unfortunately, so I would say that as sad as this is you are still doing amazingly well with them  You must be feeling awful... it is a horrible thing to have to see.
  4. Oh, for some reason SIDS has been a huge fear of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was 6 years old!!! It is SUCH a terrible thing  I'm so sad to hear that they went through that and hope and pray that things go very well with their new son and that they will be able to go through a healthy grieving process for their first son as it continues to impact upon their lives
  5. They are beautiful!!!!!! And Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are fantastic names
  6. Awww, spangles and yellowface are two of my favourite mutations, so lots of      Do you have any pics of the babies? Sounds like that pale one could be a creamino.
  7. I bet when she gets a crusty brown cere and lays an egg he'll just pretend it never happened
  8. I have the little budgie teaspoon holder thingy from Ashdene. Someone gave it to me, it's the only one I have. I also have the frogs- a mug, a tray and a set of coasters- also Natalie Jane Parker like the budgie one is.
  9. I'd definitely go to the doctor for you both and find treatment, whether it's psittacosis or not. It sounds nasty! Hope you both get better very soon and that you have no trouble fighting it off.
  10. We thought about getting back into breeding budgies in quite a few more years if we manage to buy a place. But I'm starting to think that if I get this rental place and it turns out to be long-term, we could so start sooner It's an ideal place for it. Sigh...... back to waiting lol
  11. Wow.. how did she get to be so calm and tame in the aviary? Did you have her since she was a baby? Hens like that are so sweet

I have decided that as much as I love seeing Cosmo fly, it's not safe to have him with his full wings because we have ceiling fans on all the time. He is growing back his wing feathers with his first moult. He's only got two wing feathers on each wing so far, and they're not the longest two, they're the next two along- the middle ones. So he can fly little bit- but not enough to circle around the ceiling. I don't know whether I should wait until his wings are fully grown and clip them all at once.... clip these two new ones now so he never gets his full wings at any point.. or to just wait until he has a little more lift in his flight that it's starting to seem close to getting dangerous. Which do you suggest? I don't mind him having a bit of flight as I said... the first time I clipped, I didn't clip all the way down so he could still fly from like hand to shoulder sort of distances.
  13. I thought I had one here already... mustn't have, oh well. Cosmo: Normal cobalt YF2
  14. See if you can grow some of her seeds in a pot or just tip them over your garden bed. You don't even need to bury the seeds -- if it rains or if you water it, the seeds will sprout in only a few days and you'll get this thing that looks like young thin grass. It grows so easily and budgies LOVE it. I usually pick it so that I don't pull up the seed it is attached to with the dirt all over it- I don't want to feed Cosmo dirt from my garden bed... So I break off the roots and rinse it before I give it to him. And he comes running He also likes spinach. Other birds I've had have loved celery leaves and silverbeet - Cosmo doesn't really care for them. He does like millet but if it's there he won't go out of his way for it like he does with the seed sprouts and spinach. Just some more ideas for treats I do strongly recommend the sprouted seeds for all your budgies -it's cheap and easy since you have their seed already there and you can just tip off a little bit of what they haven't eaten each day.

She is so sweet looking! What a beautiful bird. I would love one like her one day  Definitely a hen. Yes it is unfortunate that the way to tell them apart has been a bit oversimplified so that most people getting a new budgie are told that "blue is boy". Blue is both--- pale blue and white are young girls, and deeper blue/purple is boys. But I'm sure she will be a lovely pet as a girl anyway. See the two budgies on the banner at the very top of this website? The one on the left is a girl... the one on the right is a boy, and that is what they mean by blue. See his is unmistakably VERY blue. Hope that helps.
  16. I just bought a scrap of black material from spotlight. It wasn't quite wide enough, but it's a bit longer, so it does the job well enough.
  17. Are her wings clipped? If you are going to get her out of the cage to tame her that would really help. But I would not attempt any taming on the day you actually do the wing clip!
  18. okay - it's fine to try that as long as you're prepared to watch her signals and tone down a bit if she's stressed. Good luck!
  19. Thanks budgiesaurus - that is a great tip! We were planning to do that anyway, but my husband was reluctant to put in so much detail of our financial situation in case we come across as desperate or trying to prove something. So it's good to hear that detail is helpful.
  20. Probably seems a little quick to me.... you can give it a go and try and read her body language I guess, back off a little if it seems like too much for her. They can really take some time to get used to your hand, so if you go faster than they're happy with it's possible that she might get a negative association with your hand, especially if you chase her around the cage if she tries to move away, or if you grab her and she's frightened or flapping or squawking. Some birds tame faster than others, it also depends whether she was handled as a baby.
  21. They're beautiful! What great photos. By the way... your avatar makes me itchy :hap:
  22. Boys do that too. Any untame budgie will either try to bite you or run/fly away so that's pretty normal! Cosmo does it now even though he's tame, especially if he's not in a very playful mood. If she's fully hoeing into your finger then take it away, otherwise don't do anything if she bites- by that I mean don't force it even closer if she's trying to tell you she doesn't like it, but maybe just leave it there for a few seconds longer after she bites, just to show her it's not actually going to hurt her if she doesn't attack it.
  23. Yeah, give it a go for a few weeks. Maybe if she isn't remotely tame after about a month you can look for another baby, but taming is something that requires patience and hard work, so you'd be better off trying it for quite a while before you give up and try again with a different bird... because it could be just as hard with a young boy. You never know til you try!
  24. True, I had one once who was extremely tame, and he would even let you hold him in your hand-- but woe to anyone who even went close to touching his tail!
  25. I agree with Liv, that exact type of cere is the hardest for me to sex.. but I lean towards hen too.
