Pieds
I have a few pieds in my flock as some of you know and have been told what they are thought to be... we thought it would be a good learning experience, as if was for me, and see what everyone else thought them to be... so what do you think they are: 1.) http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN3770.jpg 2.) http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN3766.jpg 3.) http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN3098.jpg 4.) http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...scn2828-1-1.jpg These are all one form of pied or another from what I'm told, just want to see what everyone else thinks and see if we are all in agreement, just for fun I guess.

Budgies Wont Breed
I agree with KAZ on this statement... I too am a new breeder and tried colony breeding. IT DID NOT WORK!! I had one hen take control of 4 nesting boxes not allowing any other hens to get settled in. I also had one hen go in another hens box and kill her egg and eat it. It was only after I seperated them into breeding cages that I started having success. I now have two nesting pairs with a total of 10 eggs so far. I would recomend any advice given on this site, because any time I strayed just a bit from their suggestions, I failed. Some people's style or hopes are different, my hope was to colony breed and just let things happen as they happened, but once I saw un-neded stress and "death" occur, I was no longer willing to take that gamble. The advice here has proven to work for me. My breeding pairs are now expecting (any day now by the way)!!! And my birds are healthy and happy.

I Got An Egg....
In the last week (since Sunday night) she has done this about 4 times. Last night she did it again, but it lasted for three seconds and she was over it. I didn't even have time to get down the steps to see what was happening and she had stopped already. I'm thinking the original guesses of her mate popping in to check on her is what is causing it, but still not sure. Maybe at night when it's that dark she feels any entry, mate or not, is an intursion to her??? I'll keep an eye out and see if it continues even with a light on. THanks again.

Pied
Does the "orange beak" have anything to do with her age... she isn't even a year old yet??? Maybe it too will darken with age? Could she be dominate pied split to recessive??? Just asking cause I don't know the possibilities? And Neat, I hope you are feeling better. You were a wonderful help and if you're that much help when you're sick, you must really kick butt when you're well..... LOL

I Got An Egg....
No lights flashing that I know of... cars going up and down the road may cast off the slightest light, but nothing sudden or dramaic?? Besides the turtle tank water running at night the house is quiet. I didn't think of a radio because my birds (the 10 I have) are in my house in my living room so when my husband and I go up to bed everything but the overhead light in the kitchen are turned off. I'll have to try the night light that Neat suggested or the radio that you are suggesting and i'll let you guys know how I make out. THanks so much for the help.

Pied
Not really. She was going to take another stab at it if I sent the pics with the iris showing... I have a better understanding of pieds now, I think... so I say she is a gree single factor dominate pied hen... ??? Does anyone want to agree so I don't feel totally stupic now?? LOL
-
Pied
okay so here's pics of her iris so I'm gonna say she's not recessive???? http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4474.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4476.jpg So now what???/ LOL

I Got An Egg....
No roaches... I live in USA, Pennsylvania and really you only get roaches here if you live in filthy conditions. It's not life Flordia or other southern states in PA were roaches are a common every day thing. So I know it's not roaches. it is covered at night. the weird thing is that she doesn't leave the nesting box, she is screaming the whole time in the box???? but if a "night light" will help her I'll set one up tonight. THanks

I Got An Egg....
He is always in and out of the box with her... she never seems to mind??? He's been taking very good care of her. She comes out once in a while for some water and a bite at the mineral block or cuddle bone, but other than that she is in there 24/7 and he pops in and out all the time and she never gives him a hard time??? But you never know, at night she just might not want him near her. I never thought that it might be her own mate "bothering her". HUMMMMMMM??? They are in a breeding cage that is covered at night so I don't think there is anything (light, moth, fly, etc...) that would be disturbing her?? My cats were my first suspects :hap: , but knowing they were no where near here led me to wonder what was wrong. When I said could she possibly feel the chicks moving I meant maybe the movement of the chicks in the eggs are causing the eggs to shift a bit under her and she thinks someone is moving the box or something????

Pied Test
You got more than me Pieds really get me confused I thought I was going well with pieds too.... From looking at the correct answers I guess it's the "spangle" that throws me off.... Maybe I was trying too hard and looking for something that wasn't there.... I don't know, I guess I just need to find an excuse to justify my "failure".... Maybe better luck next time.

I Got An Egg....
okay I have a really really silly question... has anyone ever heard of a nesting hen having "night terrors"??????? LOL I know, go ahead and laugh, but my hen that is sitting on her eggs (she has 5 and is finished laying now) has been breaking out in horrible screams the last couple nights in the middle of the night. I don't know what the issue is? I know if the cage is disturbed she freaks, but no one or nothing has been bothering the cage???? I thought maybe it was one of my cats "stalking the cage" but when I woke to her screams my one cat was in bed with me and the other was in bed with my daughter. Is it possible she is feeling movement from the chicks in the eggs and it's freaking her out at night??? Her first egg was laid on the 15th. I can't think of what in the world would set her off the way she screams?

My Other New Boy?
Thank you Elly I will make sure I pay attention to all of this.

My Other New Boy?
Thanks Liv. I don't want to get into inbreeding either, but knowing that these two are together and were bought together, I just want to know what to expect if by change they are brother and sister. I'd like to keep them as a pair because they are both young and will mature together (all my other birds are months or years older already). But if "inbreeding" is a bad issue and I should stay away from this at all costs I will have to seperate them? And if so when? Do I split them now or if I see any signs of courting down the road.

My Other New Boy?
okay so this is Tex, the other "boy" I got at the same time as Sam (now determined to be a hen). First is he a boy for sure? He has a blue cere, but so did Sam when I got her. Also can you tell me what he is.... I'm thinking a Sky Blue Opaline Cock... ???? http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4101.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4102.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4204.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4270.jpg The other question I have is this... as long as I don't have a nesting box present can I keep Sam and Tex together and let them become a bonded pair for next year when they are old enought to breed? I guess what I'm asking is in general it's not a problem to have males and females together when not breeding as long as there's not a nesting box, righ??? My other concern is this... since I got these two from the pet store at the same time, same date, same cage, what are my chances that they are brother and sister and if they are should I not allow them to be a breeding pair??? I know it's okay to "inbreed", but only if you are experienced in breeding and I'm just a beginer. I hope I'm not a pain. I have alot of posts and questions but I really want to learn and besides going back to school to learn this stuff, this site has proven to be the next best thing with all the experts and advice you can't go wrong.

Pied
okay Norm, so a bird can be a Clearflight dominant pied clearwing? So Patches, that I've been talking about in the other post, is that what she is? picture http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4215.jpg

Pied
So clearflights can only be pieds??

Split For Blue?
The photo (the nest shot) is not actually a nest shot, it is a shot of the bottom of the old aviary. The other birds are not siblings or parents.... BUT the blue pied bird was purchased at the same time same place as Patches... their bands are different colors

What Are They
So opaline isn't just the presents of the faded lines on the head, you have to have the "V" shape of body color on the back too??? If so and they don't have the "V" but have faint lines on the head, what is that??

My So Called Boy...
I bought this one at the local Pet Smart... don't they have to be 3 or 4 months old to be sold??? Darn I knew it.... now my females out number my males again... no more from the pet store for me... this happened twice now... bought another young one before from the pet store I thought to be male and wasn't.... Thaks for the help guys.

What Are They
Totally ignor me cause I don't know my butt from a hole in the wall but are both the females Opaline also or do the head markings go along with the spangle in them??? Just trying to learn this stuff... I actually guessed all the colors, the dominate pied, and the cinnamon right.... I'm learning.

Pied
Thank you for the reply Neville. Can you also clarify the difference between Clearflight and Clearwing... is it just the body color dilution that seperates these two???

Split For Blue?
Yes she has a band, how do I find this breeder on line??? I bought this one from a local pet store.I'm totally lost on this one now.... Patches, my prettiest bird (in my opinion)... What I thought to be green may be blue, what I thought to be clearflight is normal... ??? She's too young to breed so I can't "test breed" yet. If she's paired with a green cock, I'm gonna get green chicks, right?? The only way to tell if she is blue is to breed her with a blue bird, right?? Can a bird be blue and split for green, no, right???http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/dscn2190.jpg http ://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...a/dscn2840.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN3770.jpg http ://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...a/DSCN4119.jpg http ://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...a/dscn1350.jpg http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4215.jpg I hope i did this right since my photo resize is not working, but here are some random pics of her anywhere from 4 months old to recent. Maybe some of these pics could help determine what Patches is???

Pied
I have been reading in detail the "Gypsy Willows" web page... which is excellent I might add, but I have a questions. Can a keet be both single factor dominate pied and Clearflight pied or are they only one or the other??? Since both would have clear flight feathers and a clear patch on the back of the head, what is the one factor that would tell me the difference of the two... ? Is it the band of color across the belly? I'm a little confused. Please help.
