  1. I breed males at 8-9 months and females at 10 months.
  2. "Fresh branches and twigs also occupy the birds. Fir, spruce, hazelnut, willow, birch, beech, linden/lime and fruit tree branches can be used without danger" http://www.animal-protection.net/sites/factsheets/voegel.pdf Cannot confirm if it is correct or not but that site says its fine. It doesnt say anything about fruit or leaves though so maybe its just the branches they eat.
  3. Your going to a budgie show. Looking very nice Shannon.
  4. thankyou all, do you think a baby would die from a 1 meter fall from impact? or would he have died from starvation overnight.
  5. I want to but I was worried if I move them, they might be neglected. And if I remove the nest boxes with nothing in it, the birds with no nest box will kill the chicks in the only remaining nesting boxes so they can make a nest. Its never ending, another bird has started laying eggs now and about to hatch in a few days, so it will never end. you would think the chicks would cry for food and the parents would still feed them, If I moved them.
  6. Is it possible to move nesting boxes with babies out of the aviary situation, and into cages? They will go with their parents but will they're parents neglect them or something similar. I've had 2 babies jump out of the box so far and its not good at all. How do others who have colony bred deal with this, and can they be moved? thanks. One of the birds fell about a meter, would he have died from the impact of the fall or would he have starved to death overnight?
  7. Very nice, this one especially.
  8. Not much flight room at all in that cage, may be okay if he is released during the day otherwise it needs to be bigger.
  9. The idiots dont even know its a feather duster.
  10. I will try.
  11. I will take photos of baby budgies tomorow.
  12. Does the game end now? what beats god?
  13. one in a hundred.
  14. 95% of pet shops are run by people with no pet knowledge what so ever. They will do anything to get a sale, even if they have to lie (which they quite often do) Their are far better alternatives to pet shops, which is why I never go to them.
  15. I've stopped colony breeding now. Going to start cabinet breeding again. A mother neglected her chicks (As far as Im aware) overnight. I went in this morning and 3 of the chicks were dead and cold, and the mother was not in the nest box. It must be harder for birds in colony style conditions to identify which nest box is theirs? If their were 20 nest boxes all looked identical and were same height, how would a hen tell which one is hers? Do they smell or do they take random guesses. If so couldnt that be why fighting occurs? One hen goes into the wrong nest box, incubates the chicks for a little while, then the real mother comes in, they fight, and the chicks die.
  16. I may end up selling some.
  17. 4 nests of chicks, some look to be clearbodys and their are 3 yellowface spangles aswell. I dont know how it came about I think I have the parentage wrong, one of the negatives of colony breeding. The clearbodies are 3 months old now and look good.
  18. I am 90% sure that the yellow bird has pbfd. My birds had the exact same beak problems. This was one of my pbfd birds Culling it may be the best option, their is a chance your other bird has contracted the disease also.
  19. I breed females up to 5 years of age. providing they are healthy
  20. when I look at a bag of no name seed from woolworths, then look at a seed from golden cob/riverina etc, I can see a massive difference. The no name seed has lots of orange seeds which I find my birds dont eat, and little black seeds, which they dont eat either. And they are missing many seeds that riverina or golden cob have
  21. its the **** seeds they put in the seed mixes to take up space, which means less of the good seed. cheap seed the birds dont eat.
  22. I was told that the birds try to jailbreak and will concentrate on escaping instead of breeding. So i tried it. I tried 3 breeding cages, 6 birds. All 3 birds laid eggs in less than 14 days from being introduced, and 2 of the pairs had chicks. Other pairs eggs were infertile. This obviously isnt enough to prove for or against it, but its something to consider. I, for one, think it will work fine as I've done it before with no problems.
  23. Looks good, would budgies be able to get stuck in their
