3 New Birds For My Breeding Room
Here are 3 new birds Greg bought at the weekend, he went on his own to a Champion breeder who has some of the top birds in the state. When Greg came back I expected to see 2 birds a pair but he got me an extra cobalt hen not real big but her breeding is exceptional and should get some top birds from her. The cock bird is a grey green spangle as we are focusing on spangles. Well this boy is a wow factor he is big and wow, he has exceptional breeding too. The third bird again is a grey green spangle hen and she is lovely too good breeding etc, I was so happy with the birds I couldn't sleep all night thinking of the possibilities that could come from these birds. The 2 green birds are split for blue so that's one thing. I am a bit worried about ending up with all green birds but Greg said as long as they are quality it doesn't matter. I guess he is right because I am now really focused on breeding to show. Cobalt Hen Grey Green Spangle cock Grey Green Spangle Hen :budgiedance:

Update On My Hospital Cage
Hi everone have made some changes to my Hospital cage after taking some advice from you all. I have 2 positions to place my perch if needed, I have lowered the drinker and feeder and I made the floor go all the way across letting light and extra heat out one end instead of both ends. I test ran it again and I am only using a 25 watt glaobe and it sat on 23 degrees C all day, so I am quite pleased about it now, What do you think. :budgiedance:

Please Help All My Budgies Are Dying By The Day
Yes Feathers it's the pour on version, I should have said that. I used to be able to get it in a small platic bottle for $20, but that vet suppier has closed & now I'm unable to buy it like that, I think because it's now been made illegal to sell these things in broken lots & must be sold in the proper container, with all the dose instructions & safety instructions & it's actually illegal, I think to use it on any other animal etc than the ones approved by law. But it's use is very common for other things like birds & other annimals. The CSIRO has used it on control of air sac mites with Gouldian finches. You have to be lucky to get broken lots now, in your area. Sorry a for your loss and Am pleased that the ones left are doing okay. I buy my ivermectin from my vet, but they always put a warning on ( saying not intend for use for budgerigars) just to cover themselves but any way I paid $16.00 for 100ml. I put it on the back of their heads/neck with a cotton bud. Yes I use wormout Gel also. It is very important to keep your birds free from all sorts of parasites.

Ahhhh...has This Happened To Anyones Bird
Yes I agree with Kas and Norm. It happened to one of mine but not the bad. But my hen broke an egg while sitting and she must sat on the other and all the white and yolk must of got on her chest a little and she plucked nearly all her front feathers out. but I worked out what the problem was because when I caught her to see how much damage she had done she felt very sticky so I washed her in warm water just enough to remove most of the sticky area, and then everything was fine she stopped plucking and sat aon the rest of the eggs and raised 6 young babies.

What Does It Take To Show A Bird.
Great advise Daz and Hath, your lucky Daz the only shows around here are all within 2 weekends, unless we travel to Melbourne but that is a 3/12 hr trip. Our shows are in March. Bendigo Club show is on a Sat, then the next day Sunday of the same weekend is the Riverina club show, which is my club and the next Saturday is the Kyabram club show. There is a young bird one in Melbourne and if they select you the club will take them down, and there is a uncapped in a couple of months again you need to win the selection for the club to take them to Melbourne. So realy I have to wait now untill March next year. But thanks guys every little a bit of info helps. Daz good luck at your Show!!!

Hospital Cage Made By Me
The foil is underneath the floor, what it is really doing is stopping any chance of the light globe setting fire to the wood, even though I don't think that would happen, the web sit you down loaded is where I got it from and his suggest to line under the floor with foil for the reason I said. Today i bought a piece of foam type material 1/4 inch thick and washable and it will sit on top of the floor, with news paper or something similar. I think this should help. What do you think. :excl:

My Aviary
Not very big, 15 long about 10 feet across but I am not sure will have a look tomorrow, I only posted pics of the breeding cages, which I have 14 in total, there is a walk in area where the seed is kept shelving for show cages and work area, there is some training cages and 4 stock cages. Hi I am the artist, you know I started them and I haven't got around to finishing them, I don't know if I want them anymore because a couple members of my club and another local club came to visit and laughed at my work of art. (they were men) they didn't appreciate my artistic skills. no being serious I think it was more of the fact that they thought I was a dippy blonde and not serious about breeding and showing.

Opaline
Yes I think she is lovely, she has always been special but there is plenty of room for improvement, I will be putting down in about 3 weeks, I will post info on babies as they come. At the moment I have to wait because I saw my pied mate her the other day so I had to seperate them. I have put the girls in one avairy and the boys in the other.

Hi Karen I think that's a great idea, because before I made mine i realy didn't know how to make one or know much about them as i would use a show cage and a light on to it.

Opaline
Hi Elly here is a picture of her back it's the best I could do with her flying about. Her v isn't realy that good She is solid but she is only a medium size bird, she has been that way in size since she was born, she isn't fat just solid her head looks much bigger and better when she rolls her head. She came second in the show in the yellow face class against several other birds and the one that won was bigger and it took out the novice champ of the show. The judge said that the first and second which was mine were two top quality birds, but the other one was in better condition in the way molt etc. But I do agree as my partner said she is a little narrow in the head. We have a cock bird here that is post on here somewhere under 4 new birds for my breeding room.Well I am going to put him over this bird because he has a huge head and long bib. He is a Dark Green Spangle. BUT i do not want to breed yellow face spangles because the yellow tends to run through the wings and tail and the judges do not like them much.

Hospital Cage Made By Me
Hi Elly, yes That web site is where I got my plans from thanks I was trying to find it to down load the link for you guys to have a look at but I couldn't find it second time around. I lined it with foil to project the heat and to make sure the wood doesn't burn, even though I know it won't just been safe. But yes agree with you that one side should be cooler than the other. My next one will be a bit different, I will make it a bit deeper and put the light on one side. I might allow room so I can have a wire front. I will have dimmer I think and a timer. My partner told me not to put the perches in and if I had to only put one, but I had to have two, but until last week I have not had a bird that sick that they wouldn't sit on the perches. That is pretty good considering how long we have had birds. thanks Elly for your impact very helpful.

Hospital Cage Made By Me
My floor has wood sitting on wire but the bottom of the wood is lined with foil to protect the wood from the heat, but I am going to change it to the wood going full lengh with a few holes to let the heat and light in. When I used it last week i lined the floor with a piece of old sheet folded it up and when my bird improved I slid the glass panel up a fraction to left some heat out. But Greg thinks a timer would be good, set for a certain time, aand it shuts off for a while, what do you think. The temp for a hospital cage should not go over 27 & 30 degrees Celsius or 90 degrees fahrenheit.

Hospital Cage Made By Me
Hi Elly! Yes I thought of that, perches being too high, but I can lower them, and feed bowls too, because I used it the other day and yes the bird sat on floor, so I took them out and sat little containers on the floor. Yes there is 6 x 1/4 holes on each side with plugs that I can take out or plug up if needed. I first used a 40 watt globe, but with all the holes unplugged it was a bit too warm, so I changed it to a 25 watt and plugged most of the hole it sits on the right temp perfectly and I now have a temp gage that is stuck on in the middle of the cage. The bottom of the cage is lined in Aluminium foil. the light globe is in the middle of the cage, I might put a dimmer switch on it later. I am sooo rapped in it that I am in the middle of making another one. Will post all that tomorrow as my brain is quite dead at the moment.

Hospital Cage Made By Me
Hi everyone. I made a hospital cage last week all by myself. So pleased that I have to show it off. I was going to the sale to buy one but found out that we couldn't go because of other engagements, so I decided to make one. WHAT DO YOU THINK. It works a dream.

Members' Opaline Budgies
This I think is a good example of an opaline. these pics are of my new baby 5 1/2 weeks old my partner reckons she has the best V he has seen in 7 years or more, I don' realy know about that, but I do know it is good and it is going to be a nice size show bird as she is showing good quality now, her over nest mates are 1 light green very nice and 2 other opalines just like this one with perfect V's also but they are a bit smaller because their mother feather plucked them raw for a few days, and I think it might of stunted their grow, but they seem to be catching up.

Marking Eggs
I haven't used a pencil as yet it might work but you need to be very gentle as the eggs are fragile, i use a fine water proof base pen that I bought and it is perfect for the job. It is very fine but has a soft tip. But any water proof non toxic pen would be fine. you need one that doesn't smell. But try your pencil I know a breeder that uses black lead pencils. I hope this helps

Interesting Observations Of Breeding Pair
Hi Keet, it's strange that your hen lays in the morning because mine lay about 2 pm every second afternoon and hatch their babies about 7am in the mornings. I thought that was same everywhere, maybe because you live in the States, but Neat says hers layed in the morning too. That'd interesting. I have a excited cock bird that does it on the wire all the time, his son is the same both birds are very fertile. Maybe your birds are just extra excited ha! ha!

Budgie With A Long, Long Curved Beak
Hi, I was just reading about Vitamin D3 a couple of hours ago and it says that Vitamin D3 deficiency is caused by lack of natural sunlight and a couple of the things can happen when bird suffers from Vitamin D3 deficiency is splayed legs, crippled feet, bent beaks I can't remember if it was long and bent beaks or just bent. It also says that these problems are rarely fixable. You should go to the vet very soon as your bird will not be able to eat properly, I have seen a breeder, well he showed me how to do it, that is trim the beak but I have never had to it up to now Touch wood. But there needs to a fair bit cut off and it has to be shaped like his beak should be, so please take him to an bird vet.
