  1. No he hasn't had his first molt yet. So his color could still change a little right? I'll try and take some better pics of him outside the cage so the lighting will be better.
  2. Hi guys! This is Scooter I posted pics when I first brought him home, but the colors of the pics were a bit off so it was kinda hard for anyone to tell if he was a Yellowface type 1 or 2. He's definitely a greywing and to me he seems more blue than green. And there's not really any yellow other than on his face and the underside of his tail feathers. But maybe someone with more experience than me will have an idea. Also, I'm pretty sure that he's a male, but being only a few months old, it's pretty much a guessing game. Again, maybe someone more experienced can tell. Thanks for the help! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/luvnjgro/DSCF0117.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/luvnjgro/DSCF0130.jpg
  3. I have a table on the patio, but hanging the cage would probably be better for him. I have 6 dogs in the backyard and they might mess with him. They wouldn't hurt him, but would be curious and want to see what it is. And that would frighten him I'm sure. My dad would secure it so it wouldn't fall. Covering the cage on one side sounds like a good idea though. He'd always be supervised though. I'd bring him out whenever I was out there. I'm out there every day to take care of my dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs, and that would give him some time to get a little sun and fresh air.
  4. I'm not sure what size cage I would get. Just something a little smaller than his. Not too small though. And yes, he gets alot of flying time inside. If I'm home, then he's outside the cage for the most part, and is free to fly around my bedroom. I probably wouldn't have him outside for very long, but just long enough for him to get some fresh air. I think he'd enjoy it.
  5. I was thinking my budgie Scooter might enjoy going outside sometimes, but I have a few questions. Would it even be okay for him to be outside? It would be in the evening, since I'm in Texas and it's really hot during the day. Also, I'm thinking it might be better to use a cage that's smaller than his. His is pretty big and is kinda difficult to hang up under the patio. Would it scare him to much to go outside and be in a cage that he isn't used to? Or would he eventually associate that cage with outside time? Thanks for any advice
  6. He isn't acting any different than he normally does. He's not fluffed up either. I think he's probably okay. I'll just let him relax the rest of the day, and put him on his playgym this evening to see if he's acting normally.
  7. I let Scooter out today to excercise, and he flew into a mirror. The mirror is down pretty low and he usually flies up above it. But today he came down from the ceiling fan and flew into the mirror. He actually hit it a few times (about 4 times) before I could catch him. He finally landed behind my VCR cause I guess he got pretty dizzy after hitting the mirror, and I was able to get him back to the cage. He seems okay. He's sitting on his perch. Has no problem with balance or anything and has been preening himself. He's tired, but he usually takes a nap after flying around anyways. I offered him some millet and he gobbled that up in no time. There are no visible injuries and no blood. The only thing that's noticable is that his cere is a little bruised. Do yall think he's okay? Should I take him to the vet tomorrow (they are closed for the day) or just keep an eye on him for now? And the mirror is going to be covered up from now on. I don't want to take any more chances.
  8. I've had Scooter for 2 weeks today. Every once in awhile he makes a chirp, but for the most part he doesn't make a sound. I always have the radio on for him, but last night I decided I'd try something different. I took him out of his cage and put him on his playgym, then I put in the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge. I put on "Your Song." At first he just sat there, but then he started to try to sing along. And as the song went on, he really started chirping continuously. And when "Come What May" came on, he sang even more and much louder. He had never done anything like that before. He really loved the music apparently cause he was singing throughout both songs. I guess Ewan McGregor brought him out of his shell. :(Laughing out loud):
  9. He likes millet, but he won't eat it from my hand. I've bought some other treats though that I'm gonna try. He doesn't seem to be afraid of my hand. I think it's what you said. He doesn think it's worthwhile. Sometimes he'll get on, other times I really have to be persistant. I'll try moving more slowly with him. And he's flighted. I have no problems getting him to go back in his cage. If he's on his playground, he'll get on my finger to get back in. And I'll use his perch if he's up to high to reach.
  10. I've had Scooter for a week and a half now. He's starting to act funny about getting on my finger. He was just getting on as soon as I asked him to, but now I have to be very persistant with him. He'll just keep climbing the cage walls and eventually give in and get on. Once he's out of the cage he's fine, but he wasn't doing that last week. Is it normal for him to be acting like this? Am I doing something wrong? I'm still working with him every day, but he just started doing this yesterday. What could be the problem?
  11. I've had my Scooter for a week today, and I have not had him clipped. When I got him, he had no prior training. Within the first 3 days he was understanding the "UP" command and he is now pretty much fully finger-trained. I've already started letting him out of his cage. He'll do a couple laps around my bedroom before landing on the ceiling fan and start chirping away. I think if you have a room that is bird safe and are able to tame them, I don't feel clipping is necessary. I read that it's easier to tame them if they are clipped cause they depend on you more, but I've had no problems training him. It's very easy to get him to go back in his cage if I want him to. Even if he is up to high for my finger, I just use one of his perches and he gets right on to let me take him back to his cage. Birds were meant to fly, and I think if it is at all possible, they should retain that ability. As long as the bird is not in any danger of course.
  12. Sure, I can try to get some pictures.
  13. My budgie Scooter is sneezing. It's not all the time though. I've noticed he only sneezes when he's preening, after scratching his head, or after fluffing up. He acts completely healthy. Is this normal or could he be sick? Is he just getting some feather dust up his nose? It's usually a dry sneeze. If there is any discharge it's very, very little and it's clear. There's no crusty or wet feathers above his cere. Thanks for any help.
  14. No it's not an aviary. They just live in the trees on the property. It's 3 1/2 acres and a large wooded area borders one side of the property. There are aviaries on the property for the macaws and cockatoos, but the parakeets just roam free with the other native wild birds.
  15. I hope they all survive. I had no idea they would actually breed, but apparently they did. It's kinda cool having them around all the time.
  16. I work at a pet resort and bird sanctuary and some wild budgies managed to find their way there. I'm guessing they either escaped from someone's home or were simply let go. They've been hanging around my work for several months now. A normal blue male and a normal green female. They won't let you touch them, but they aren't afraid of people. So today I was walking the dogs and I heard the chirps of the budgies. I usually walk up and talk to them, and then I also feed them. I walked over to the tree they usually sit in expecting to see them, but to my surprise, it was a different budgie! A yellowface with a bright blue body and it was a baby. I then started listening more closely and realized I could hear several budgies coming from several trees. I also found a pied budgie that looked to be mostly white with some spots of blue. I say there were at least 5 or 6 budgies. Maybe more. I think the 2 budgies that have been there for months had babies! It would be too coincidental for all these budgies to make there way to the resort. So now I'm surrounded by a colony of them. But they aren't at all afraid of people. I just find it ironic that of all the places for them to turn up, they find their way to a bird sanctuary (Laughing out loud).
  17. I had never really had much of an interest in owning a bird. My parents bought 2 budgies when I was around 8, but they really didn't have much interaction with us. They loved each other more than us (Laughing out loud). I then had zebra finches at about 15, but they don't really make the best hands-on pets. I really took an interest in getting a bird once I got my job. I work at a pet resort and bird sanctuary. I take care of many large parrots (macaws, cockatoos, african grays, amazons) that have either been abused or could no longer be cared for by their former owners. After I began caring for them, I decided that I really wanted a bird of my own. I wanted something that I could bond with, but not something as large as a parrot. So I thought a budgie would make the the perfect pet bird. And I believe I chose right. I haven't had my Scooter for very long, but I already love him. He's so sweet and I'm really enjoying my time with him So what made you decide that a budgie was the right bird, or pet, for you?
  18. Thanks for the welcome guys! :hap: No yellow on his wings. They are just gray and white, but on the underside there is some yellow either on his tail or flight feathers. I can't tell which feathers for sure. I guess it'll just be a waiting game until his first molt to really know his true sex. I'm still gonna him a "he" for now. He has more mannerisms of a boy I guess. He doesn't chew and doesn't bite (I heard females are better known for doing this). The picture doesn't really do justice to his true color cause it's dark, but his cere is not really blue at all, even though it kinda looks it in the picture. It's actually purple/pink. He flew for the first time today. I let him out twice and he took a couple trips around my bedroom and enjoys sitting on the ceiling fan blades. He started chirping very happy chirps. And he was very good about going back in his cage. He was up a little too high to use my finger, but he got on his perch when I asked him to. I think we are making alot of progress for it being only the first week.
  19. Hey guys! I'm Jessica and I just bought my first budgie, Scooter. I'm not sure how old he is, but he's a baby and he's very sweet. I've got a few questions since I'm still very new to budgies. I'm pretty sure he's a "he", though at this age it's a bit hard to tell. There are no white rings around his nostrils so I don't think it's a girl. Any more experienced budgie owners wanna help me confirm if it's a he or she? Also, I've only had him a week, but I've already got him pretty handtamed. He knows the "UP" command now, and pretty much learned that within the first 2 days. I was told he was not handtamed, so I guess I got a really smart one (Laughing out loud). I've started letting him out of his cage, but he doesn't go far. Just sits on his perch on the outside of the cage and looks around. How long does it normally take for them to get comfortable outside the cage? And he's also very quiet. Every once in awhile he'll chirp, but it's rare for him to make any sounds at all. Is this normal? Will he eventually start singing more? And can anyone tell me what color type he is? He has a yellow face and has a light blue body (even though it looks more green in the picture, it's actually blue). Here's a picture of Scooter, and thanks for all the helpful info on the site! :hap:
