  1. Name:Scooter Sex:Male Type of Yellowface: 2 Colour: Sky-blue Other mutations: Greywing The first picture is a clearer picture, but it makes him look alot greener than he is. The second picture is truer to his actual color. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/luvnjgro/scooter4.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/luvnjgro/scooter3.jpg
  2. I have 2 budgies at the moment. I've had Scooter for 8 months. He's very tame and very bonded to me. About 2 weeks ago, I bought a second budgie because I thought it was only right that I get him a friend. She is completely handtame, although she doesn't completely trust me yet, so she only comes to me when she wants to. My biggest fear about getting a second budgie was that I would lose the bond I have with Scooter because he wouldn't need me as his flockmate anymore. So far, I've seen no change in the bond I have with Scooter. He loves Bella too, but he still loves to interact with me as well. I know there are members here that have had success keeping more than one bird tame, while others have not. I honestly think it depends on the bird. I'm not sure if Bella will ever be tame like Scooter. She might never be, but I'm okay with it because she's tame enough where I can handle her and she provides companionship for Scooter when I'm not around. I have noticed that she does whatever Scooter does. If he comes to me, then she will follow. I think constant interaction is essential. Work with all of them every day. Retraining one at a time and working with it individually is a good idea, but how much attention are you giving the other two? To keep a level of tameness, I think it's important to interact with a bird a couple hours every day. Budgies tend to follow each other. It's monkey see, monkey do. If you are successful at getting one somewhat tame, the others may slowly follow suit.
  3. Try hanging a toy from the ceiling that would entice him to want to fly up to it. When my Scooter was younger, he was out of his cage alot of the time, but didn't fly around all that much. All he had was his playgym outside of his cage. I then bought a spiral rope and hung it on the ceiling. Now whenever he's out, he automatically goes to his rope. He can run all up and down it to play with his bells and he tends to take more flights around the room. I think it's because he's perched up higher. So you could try something similar if he likes to play with toys.

I work at a bird sanctuary and we have 2 tiels that have been there for a couple months now. They aren't tame. They may have been tame at some point, but I'm really not sure. I've considered bringing them home with me, but since I have my 2 budgies, I'm curious how well budgies and tiels typically get along. The tiels would be in their own cage obviously, but if I wanted to let them out for flight time all together, is that a possibility?
  5. I'm a night owl so we are on a weird schedule (Laughing out loud). I ususally don't go to bed until around 3 AM and wake up around noon. I try to get them covered by 1 AM at the latest, but they don't really go to sleep until I do. Bella still isn't quite on my schedule yet, so she'll go to sleep earlier, but Scooter would stay up all night if I let him (Laughing out loud).

Both of mine came from the same pet shop. Private breeders aren't very easy to find in the States. I had looked at several stores before buying. I looked at the big chain pet stores(Petco and Petsmart), but found that the birds looked healthier at the little family-owned pet shop that I bought mine from. They get all of their baby budgies from the same breeder and they always look very healthy. Scooter has never had any problems in the 8 months that I've had him, and my new budgie Bella is also doing great so far. I think if you do your research before buying, you can get some very nice birds from pet shops.
  7. It's definitely not an overnight process. It takes alot of time, persistance, and patience. I've had Scooter for almost 8 months now and I still consider bonding an ongoing process. He trusts me and knows I'm his human. He loves to talk and sing to me, play with me, and give kisses. But even with all that being accomplished, I still don't think the bonding is over. And now with Bella, I have to start the whole process again. She is already handtamed, which helps, but it will still take quite some time to form that special bond with her.
  8. Bribes have always worked well for me. Scooter is trained to step onto his play gym when I want him to go back in (since he won't step up onto my finger when he's perched up high...I don't know why). He usually does it, no questions asked. But every once in awhile, he'll feel like not doing what I want him to do. So I always have some millet on hand. It never fails. He'll come right to me if I have a treat for him. It's become a little tricky since I got a second budgie. He wants Bella with him at all times, so unless she's back in the cage already or I have her step up at the same time as him, he's so preoccupied looking for her that he'll keep flying back up to his boing as soon as I get him near the cage door. But the millet always seems to work. But anyways, I'd try millet or whatever treat you usually feed them. They'd probably go for it.
  9. I wanted to go the whole quarantine period, but I think it would've been bad for her. She just wasn't doing very well being alone. I think she'll be fine now though. The pet store I bought her from rarely has any problems with their birds. All their budgies come from the same breeder, and I bought Scooter from them and he's never had any health issues. If something does come up, I have an excellent vet that I can go to. He's saved the lives of many of the birds I care for at the sanctuary I work at. I'll just be keeping a close eye on the both of them for the next couple months to make sure nothing out of the oridinary pops up.
  10. Well I've got some good news. I moved her in with Scooter, which I know I shouldn't have done, but it has made a world of difference. She was bonded with a male budige at the pet store, so being alone was really affecting her. Making her depressed I'd say. Before I moved her, she wouldn't touch her food, she would run around her cage like a maniac because she could hear Scooter but couldn't find him, and was knocking down all the perches in her cage. I know quarantine is important, but I'm afraid I would've lost her if she had remained alone. I work for a bird sanctuary, so if I need an avian vet, I have one at my disposal. Now that I've moved her, her poops are beginning to look normal. Probably because she's started eating, and eating very well. You know budgie see, budgie do. Scooter eats, so she eats. She was still looking fluffy this morning, but as of this evening, she's no longer fluffed up. I think it was all just the stress of being moved to a new place and being alone. Being with him, she was finally able to get a good night's sleep and eat a good meal (Scooter made sure of that (Laughing out loud)). She appears to be doing very well now, so hopefully that will continue. And Scooter is absolutely in love! And she loves him! And they both love me! So it's a good thing.
  11. I'll just keep an eye on her then. She's anything but quiet though. She's very rambunctious and wants alot of affection. She does appear to be fluffier than Scooter is. She's not sitting in one place all fluffed up, but constantly looks that way. She does appear to be molting though and preens herself frequently. Could molting make her appear fluffy?
  12. So I've been keeping an eye on the poops of my new budgie just to make sure they look normal. Last night and this morning they looked normal, but a little more watery than usual. I'm guessing this is due to stress from moving into a new environment. So I was looking tonight and now it appears to just be urine and the urate. There is no feces. Could this be because she hasn't eaten anything? She probably ate yesterday morning at the pet store, but she hasn't touched her food since I picked her up yesterday afternoon. She did eat a tiny bit ot millet, but not much. Should I be worried or could it just be due to stress?
  13. My new budgie is clipped so I'm curious as to how long it should be before her flight feathers grow back in. She is currently going through what I believe to be her first molt at the moment, and they just reclipped her yesterday (apparently she had already been clipped once before). So I'm guessing those might have been new flight feathers. Scooter was never clipped so he was always able to fly. It's much different with a clipped bird for sure. She's extremely tame already. I can pick her up wrapping my whole hand around her without so much as a nibble. She relies on me completely for transport, but she still doesn't understand that she can't get any lift when she tries to fly. So when she does she just goes crashing to the ground. I keep trying to avoid her jumping off, but she keeps wanting to explore, and a few times she's bumped into the wall and my dresser. I'm just worried about her hurting herself.
  14. I'd had him for less than 24 hours, so I hadn't really grown attached to him yet. And I knew I couldn't have 3 so I decided taking him back and picking out a female would be the best thing. And her cheek patches are blue-violet if that helps.
  15. I did alot of researching last night on the internet. I had originally heard that you'd have better luck getting 2 males to live together, and then I kept on reading and alot of what I read said it didn't really matter. And since I already had a boy, I figured why not go for it and try a female. So she is the one. She's very sweet, and is already much more comfortable than the male was. She's very alert, playing with her toys a bit, and is communicating with Scooter from afar. She's still a bit nervous when I approach the cage, so I'm kinda just leaving her alone for right now until she gets more settled.
  16. I changed my mind and exchanged the male for a female. I updated my first post with new pics.
  17. After much debating, I finally decided to get another budgie so Scooter could have a companion. I went out and bought a larger cage and now have the new bird in Scooter's old cage. Well guys I changed my mind (Laughing out loud). I did some more reading and researching last night, and decided I wanted a female instead of a male. So I took back the one I bought and exchanged it for a female. She's very cute, and the great thing is, she's already completely handtamed. Although she's too scared at the moment to have anything to do with me (Laughing out loud), I walked around with her on my hand in the pet store the whole time I was there. I think she's older than the other one, but she's still younger than Scooter. Her baby bars are already gone and she's already gone through her first molt. I took a few pics of her, but she's scared of the camera so they aren't very good. But maybe someone can tell my what type she is. And a new picture of Scooter cause he's oh so sexy (Laughing out loud)

Scooter does the exact same thing. It's so funny to watch. :(Laughing out loud): He loves anything with a bell. He loves his big blue bell in particular. He wears it on his head like a hat and will sing to it. He sometimes even falls asleep with it still on his head. :(Laughing out loud):

Scooter likes to do the same thing. It's definitely not biting, but nibbling. Budgies like to chew and sometimes they'll even chew on you. I have found that some sort of distraction works best for me. Whether it be a toy or a treat, I just use anything that will get his attention.

I'm a night owl. Always have been. So I'm rarely in bed before 2 or 3 AM, and I usually don't wake up until noon. Since Scooter is in my bedroom, he's kind of become accustomed to my schedule. I dim the lights in my room by midnight and cover him up, but he rarely ever goes to sleep before I do. He just sits in his cage playing with his toys and softly chirping. He could sleep if he wanted, but he usually is making noise right up until I get in bed. It's probably a weird schedule for a bird, but he seems totally happy with it.

Scooter will sleep with his head up inside of his big blue bell. It's so funny. :(Laughing out loud):
  22. It's so funny how budgies will flirt with practically anything. Scooter is very fond of his bells. He flirts with all 10 of them all day long (Laughing out loud). But he'll also flirt with his rope, beads, and even me on occassion. He's even been known to flirt with my Johnny Depp poster. Seriously. :(Laughing out loud): So what funny things does your budgie flirt with?

Scooter is the same way. He LOVES the vacuum (Laughing out loud).
  24. Hi guys! Thanks for all the advice and help. He seems to be doing fine today. I don't believe it was a bite or scratch. It just looked like the feather was yanked out some how, and caused the bleeding. But the bleeding has stopped, he's eating well, and acting like his normal happy self. He is favoring the wing a bit by not flying more than a short distance. It's probably just a little sore. But I think he's going to be okay.
  25. I came home from school tonight, and went to check on Scooter like I usually do, and I noticed he had a bit of blood on his forehead. I thought he may have just bumped something in his cage while he was flying, but then I noticed that all my DVDs had been knocked off my shelf, which meant one thing. The cat got in my room. Usually my family is pretty good about making sure the door to my room stays shut so she can't get in, but apparently she sneaked by this time. So I figured that must've cause a flying fit. But then I noticed him preening his right wing quite a bit, and once he lifted it, I saw a good deal of blood on the underside of his wing. One of his flight feathers had been pulled out (I found it on the bottom of his cage). I don't know how it happened cause the cat can't get her paws through the cage. He seems okay. There is not any blood anywhere in the cage so I don't think he lost much, and the wound seems to have clotted cause there is only dry blood there now. I gave him some millet to make him feel better, and he's currently singing and playing with his bells like always. Is there anything I should do as far as the wound goes? Should I put something on it too make sure it doesn't bleed anymore? Should I not let him out to fly for a few days? This has never happened before so I'm not sure what I should do. Thanks for the help.
