Well And Truly Plucked
I am sorry, I do not believe that hens pluck due to lack of salt or any other vitamin or mineral. My firm believe is stress or boredom.

My Aviary....start To Finish
There is a Rare Budgie Club in most states as far as I know GB Here is some photos of the work I am doing so far on the aviary. Looks like a building site so far.

Well And Truly Plucked
The babies are looking better in their foster nests...the redness has gone from their skin and new fuzz is already beginning to appear where they lost their feathers. They are being very well fed with new foster parents too. By The Way the yellow chick seems to be a lutino as I first thought and not a lacewing.

What Mutation Is It
There is no such thing as split to spangled I am afraid.....spangle is a dominant gene and as such is always a visual gene and cannot be split for. That bird carries no spangle.

Linda_s Breeding Journal
I know you have said you dont like dowel, but branches are best saved for the aviary and flights. Dowel that stays where it should and doesnt move or swivel at the wrong times is best for breeding cages. You need a dowel for each end of that cage front to back, not across a corner. Its needs to be fixed so it doesnt swivel or move. Moving mating perches is a good reason for infertile eggs.........16mm dowel.

Linda_s Breeding Journal
I was just about to say the same thing....the perches in this cage are not great for a breeding cage

My Aviary....start To Finish
I have begun to fit out the structure for the walls and mesh and divisions in the aviary.........Spending a few $$$'s on materials etc. Lots of working with the angle grinder cutting metal framework and also dynabolting the framework into the concrete slab. I hate hammerdrilling and dynabolting.........love metal cutting with the grinder. Will have some help next week...Ripbudgies is coming to assist. I will also have to work amidst the week breaking up the week a little and to earn some more $$$'s. I am hoping to put the birds in the new flights by saturday the 3rd of october. Sunday I will have a visitor from Tassie............a forum member who is over here for a few days, so I will take him to the Rares show on Sunday.

Changed My Aviary
You have an excellent setup now Deb. You would have to be really happy with that

Strange Molting-need Reasuring
Aska friend to hold the bird and you take the picture or vice versa....I dont think asking the bird to lift his wing will help much
-
Moulting
Then you cannot foster eggs. I would pull him out and later on you can candle the eggs so you know how many are likely to hatch.........and help her all you can with easy food.
-
Moulting
Can the hen manage on her own ? Yes, but can you foster the eggs into another nest ?
-
Strange Molting-need Reasuring
Feather picking is rare in budgies ....its more of a parrot thing. At the age your budgie is right now he would be moulting, so chances are he is. A photo will help.
-
Moulting
Thats a pity he is moulting now. I personally would pull out any breeding birds who were moulting as moulting is hard enough without adding breeding to the equasion. A Change of seed will force a moult...has there been any change of diet for him in the breeding cage ?
