New mums are good about accepting chicks. The thing is you never put a fully fearthered one ( 3-4 weeks ) in a foster mums nest as they are seen as intruding adults. Anything younger up to 2 and a half weeks ) is fine.

Those interesting flight feathers you mentioned......is it because of the dark edge ? If so................all these chicks have the same look

I would swap the chicks, either the newly hatched or older ones. Its easier to shift older chicks if you have legrung the older ones so you can ID them later on. Too much can go wrong shifting partly incubated eggs around, but its up to you

Removing Feathers From Aviary Wire
One of the hardest things to clean up in the aviary is those feathers that stick to the aviary wire. One way to deal with them is to burn them off. Here is what you need.... http://www.hardwaredelivered.com.au/store/...iller-Wand.html Its a gas torch wand section which is attached to butane gas cannisters. Mostly if you shop around the hardware stores you will find them for $50 and the gas cannisters come in packs of four for around $7 as pack. Designed for killing weeds so you have an excuse to buy it for home BUT use it for the aviary too

My Aviary....start To Finish
Calley is okay. She finds her water, her food and her perches. Mostly she sits and cocks her head from side to side listening to things ---------------------------------------------------------------- Normally I mix the extra japanese millet into the seed drum, but today I gave them a dishful in each flight. They acted like it was catnip to a cat and a new addition to the family...........HARLEY

we have melanistic spangles on our forum.......use the search function and see- Green Tail?
Melanistic spangles have white tails in blue series and yellow tails in green series- Show Budgerigar Breeder Interviews
I would be very interested to find out how you could force particular cocks and hens to pair up in a colony breeding set up... And whats a Stargazer, Faded, Dusk and a Polydactyl??? In my colony breeding article in the FAQ section I stated a method that assists pairing in colony breeding. Re the other rarer breeds try Ken Yorkes website link provided in the interview and see if theres anything there. If not email him for clarification or further articles for here - Green Tail?
