Removing Feathers From Aviary Wire
What was the name of the wire?? it wasnt a name particularly JB.......it was a much thicker guage wire and around an inch by an inch mesh which for show budgies is fine.

Hen Attacking Male
I have lost cock birds to hens like this. Some hens go to nest and do the egg thing all on their own and dont want to mate with the cock. Chances may even be the eggs arent fertile. But to save him you have to remove him. I would stop her completely and give her 6 months in the flights after a short rest to stop the egglaying cycle in a holding cage. Try her again much further down the track but watch her very carefully. agree

Points To Consider...............
I am preplexed by this comment - what do you mean? Are you saying children should not consider breeding? She has been researching for some time now and bought her first birds because of a love for them. As far as I can tell, she has done everything right and wants to be a serious breeder, with our full support, but of course is still learning from the 'experts' (her grandfather used to be a Finch breeder). This comment made me raise an eyebrow & seems quite discouraging..... I don't see anything wrong with earning a bit of pocket money to help pay for the expenses at the very least. Dont be too worried by that comment.........it was aimed at a particular member a long time ago who did not have support or encouragement of her parents ( unlike your case ) re her birds and was she making some very bad choices in regard to the ages of the birds she was breeding and their welfare in order to make what she hoped was a quick dollar. She had cages in her wardrobes with no sunlight or airflow and all jammed and stacked into her room and the conditions were both appalling and worrisome to members here. They were also ( as a family ) collectors of animals and had what could be described and a houseful of cages of all kinds of animals and birds all for breeding purposes and animals in far too small enclosures and not in breeding conditions.

Cut And Run, Or Keep Persisting
Stew............a CHOCOLATE cere may well have been too far along in regard to being in condition. CHOCOLATE coloured cere is what happens just before going out of condition and the cere peeling away to go whitish blue. Best time for condition of hens is light to medium brownish. Your timing was wrong. But also of note is not too many GOOD hens are discarded to pet supply places. The best hens come from breeding your own. More often than not hens found at pet stores may have issues. I would try her again though, as I feel sure you left it too late the last time. Chocolate cere now. Light brownish yes. If you are after good birds, come to metropolitan Budgerigar Club meetings ( early though around 9:30 ) as there is always birds for sale. PM me for contact details for another show breeder who had many birds for sale last meeting.

My Daughter Getting Ripped Off?
A hard lesson to learn. Noone should be dealing with a nine year old child anyway without her parents with her. Yes, she may have been ripped off. But maybe next time you go with her and negotiate the deal. You can gain a lot by going in there now and speaking very loudly about their opportunistic practices with a naive nine yr old..........and the louder and more angry you are the more they will want to resolve the issue before other customers hear it.

Chick Mortality
Dead chicks always look squashed by the time we see them or find them but it isnt the cause of death in most cases.

Dark Factor Pairing
well if he looks olive and has deep purple patches hes most probbly a violet dark green but send picture i will tell you my opinion Nestmates ( siblings ) were violets. :laughter: When you say the nestmates were Violets do you mean Visual Violet or Violet Greens? Oh and by the way your Violet must be split Oplaine to produce an Oplaine cock. Nestmates were visual violet. ***UPDATE. Seems I didnt get the dark green split blue hens anyway, but the dommie pied will arrive here in a day or two. Cancel that last update........I did get the dark green split blue hens after all ( Henry George bloodlines ) and both sisters.

Chick Mortality
More info would help Lib....on each particular situation where you are having deaths of chicks....like at which age or stage of development, weather conditions, parents sitting or not, being disturbed from nests or not, age and experience of parents etc etc. Lots and lots of things come into it. Maybe with more info we can brainstorm it out and help work out any issues. I may have to go off shortly...my husband has had a heart attack and I will be off to be with him again at the hospital. But I am sure you will get more answers and with all the info pulled together there may be a solution or not as the case may be :laughter: Cheers kaz

New Egg With One Near Ready To Leave The Nest?
How old are the chicks ? and how healthy is the hen. Generally I only allow two rounds and stop them. If this is your intent, then remove her to a seperate cage away from all the others ( out of earshot ) and allow her to stop her egglaying cycle ( no nestbox ). Put chicks in a tub on the floor of cage so dad can complete the raising of them and teaching them how to eat. Put budgie seed as bedding in the container they are in. Removing eggs as laid will only make the hen try and replace them making her lay more than she should anyway. Like trying to fill up a bucket with water while its leaking :laughter:

Chick Mortality
I wouldnt expect the losses you are having percentagewise per clutch. I think you need to assess why this is occurring. An article of interest http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=22377

Cec's Aviary Tour
Dave wont get the birds today......we had a hiccup in the grand scheme of things. Had to race Ken to hospital as he seemed to be having a heart attack. They've kept him in and another test around 6pm will tell the story......meanwhile he is drugged to the gills and happy and resting.

Its all about Pie and her profession as a "dogger". She is a licensed hunter of feral animals on properties. Going out to shoot, trap and rid places of feral animals that cause problems for people. Great photo of Pie with her gun over her shoulder.

Green Tail?
I believe it to be a myth, as I have seen it many times and none of those birds were from clearwing breeding or genetics.
