I have see alot of questions about cages and how many birds. It would be interesting to see your cage set up and the number of birds you presently have in there. I believe it gives people a good visual feel. We talk about dimension but to some of us that means nothing (Laughing out loud) - like me when I first got started. I saw the dimension but really couldn't visually how big.

note I took this when I first got it, I have removed all dowel perches everything is rope, natural perches that I made and a calcium perch.

2 feet deep, 7 feet tall, 5 feet wide,

7 budgies now in this one, i'd say probably 15 safely,

 

 

set up differently now this is old picture, has toys and natural perches now, and just budgies live in here the tiels now have their own.

Bea I would love to know where you got your rope perches from I am in WA and have looked everywhere I can think of and no-one seems to sell them here, feather's you might no where I can find them seeing as your in WA to........ any idea's?

Jouslou, you can get rope perches from a lot of places here in WA... some city farmers have them, a bird shop called birds n fish place have them as well. A lot of pet shops stock them as well. Just gotta look for them.

My I suggest if buying perches from here get the medium sized perch, perfect length and great diameter - I found the small was a bit 2 short... (still got 2 of them though hehe)

Juleslou, I have seen them at Pet Magic in Cannington as well. That's where I found the poor, poor overcrowded budgies.

I bought a cage like Riebie's and Bea's for only $39.95 Bargin! As Iv'e seen it for $60, except it has doors on both sides so a breeding cage if I need it. A month after I bought it some family friends who sold their birds, gave us a small avairy and three cages,one of which is exactly the same to the one I had bought.

I get a lot of second hand cages because my dad is a painter and matinace guy and picks up lots of unwanted cages. Which I will add, go through at least 3 washes with disenfectant and thats if I know what happened to the birds. I'm a bit obsesive about cleaning!

Thanks for the help with the rope perch's I had a look at the city farmer's in Kelmscott and they didn't have any, even asked for them and they looked at me like I was crazy.... and the closest pet shop to me doesn't have any either.... but next time I am near cannington I will have a look at pet magic, I live about 30 mins from cannington so not there that often.

My cage is 89cm (3ft) x 89cm x 165 cm (5ft) tall. I usually have 4 budgies in it, however two adults and 3 babies are occuying it now and the other two adults are in a different cage.

It could fit about 8 and 10 would be my max. Although I'd probably always try to find room for more .

This is a picture of it when I first got it. It is set up way more differently now. (more branches and more toys):

 

 

 

This is my other cage (the one the other adults are in).

80cm long x 40cm deep x 40cm tall

I usually kept two in there, although 3 fit comfortably. 4 would be my max.

Again they are old pictures of the cage.

Hi TigerBlue Eyes, this is the second time I have seen this list posted and it really worries me. These cages all have a small footprint (18 X 18) and get higher and higher. These tall cages are not good for budgies.

 

Budgies need flight cages. ie. long cage width so that they have room to exercise and fly from side to side. To quote Daz and others on this board "budgies are not helicopters". They don't do well in tall vertical cages.

that is true the wider the better since they fly across and not up but what I would like to see TigerBlue Eyes is actual pictures of the cages. I am horrible with picturing all these dimensions if you could post pics of the cages and your set up that would be awesome

Mine is tall. But it is just so wide, if it wasn't tall it would be a good coffee table. They like it though and use all of it.

I think when the width is above a certain measurement it doesn't really matter how tall it is. I think widths should be about 80cm min.

Hi Marlon, the 2 budgies that I keep inside love that cage too. It doesn't have a name that I am aware of, but I'm pretty sure that Nathan got a similar one earlier this year. I've asked him in another thread where he got his from. I will see if I can find any info in his old posts.

I have just upgraged my little cage to this new cage yesterday..my little boy doesnt know what to do with all the room...please excuse lack of toys...used to having a smaller cage hehe...im planning to get another budgie too...how many budgies would u recommend for this cage? i think the measurements are roughly 77cmwide,48depth,85 height..... :budgiedance:

This is a great topic. its great to see others setups. I dont use cages, except for quanentine. i have all my birds divided into 2 avairys. 12f long 6f high and 5f wide is the main one and 4f high by 4f wide by 4f long is the small one. the big one is for adults and breeders, and the other will soon be redone for babies only.

I love this forum - I just read through some FAQs and realized that the cage I thought was big is actually the minimum size for one bird, and is tall rather than wide. Since I've just gotten a third bird and would like to eventually have them all in the same cage (QT right now) I just ordered this one off of ebay. (The free shipping sold me!)

I've been letting my first two birds loose all the time, but several close calls with cats have convinced me that isn't going to work in my house. I can give them free play time out of the cage every day when the cats are locked up, but they'll have to go back in the cage when I can't directly supervise. Therefore I'd like a cage that's a little nicer and bigger for them, in my everlasting quest to get them to act like birds instead of little scared unhappy statues.

 

That link has lots of cages available, and links to an ebay store that has aviaries and multi-cage stands and other stuff, pretty good prices.

 

I've also found that rather than paying $8-$20 for 'natural' perches, I can go to the hardware store and get dual-ended screws -- one end screws into the wood, and the other end accepts a wingnut and bolt. Then some scrounging around my yard turned up some nice branches - total cost about 50cents per perch. I boiled the branches before drilling the ends to soften them (and keep them from splitting) and it also killed any germs outside birds might have left lying around.

Thats is a great cage...I have a similar one and almost the same size for my kindie cage

I've had a few cages since I first got a budgie. Usually the ones sold in the stores here are all wrong.

When I first got my two boys as a birthday gift they came in this awful round cage. They seemed very unhappy in here.

They seemed a bit better in this square tall cage but not really happy there was not room for flight. I would not suggest getting this cage either.

The next cage seems big but actually the birds did not use the bottom part at all.

I had three birds in here comfortably.

 

I now put two birds per cage (male and female) in cages similar to one that was shown above. I have heard that some people separate the males and the females when they are not breeding. I have had much fighting among my males and hesitate to put them together. So for now this is my set up.

I'm still in the learning process.

During the winter I let them fly around as much as possible. This spring when two of them started breeding the male of the couple started attacking another. I had to isolate them to their cages. Also the six usually get along well in one cage as long as the door is open. They choose to stay together in one cage during the winter.
