so i got a new budgie 2 days ago a male about one or so. he is hanging out around the bottome of the cage does this mean he is nurvice or is there some thing else wrong. i have not seen him eat or drink yet his feathers are nice and tight not fuffy. i put water and food in the reg dishes and some near the floor for him. he has only gone about 1/2 wayup the cage to look and then he comes back down. i will try and post pics soon he is very cute. :)

Yep that is normal. they don't tend to eat for the first few days. One of my budgies didn't eat for a whole week!!! I would suggest covering all the sides of the cage except the front with a blanket, so that he fell secure and then every day uncover the cage slightly until you eventually have the whole cage uncovered. I wouldn't try handling him for the first few days, just sit next to him, talk to him, read out loud to him, so he can get used to your voice. And when you look at him try to blink lots, so he knows you aren't hunting him, because predators will continuously stare at their prey. When he starts to eat or preen in front of you that is when he is comfortable enough to be around you and you can probably start handling him then. I would start by offering him millet and letting him get used to your hand in the cage. When he happily approaches your hand and eats from it you can start teaching him to step up, by pushing your finger against his belly or by hanging millet on the other side of you hand so that he is enticed to go onto your hand to retrieve the millet. Do these sessions for 10 to 15 minutes up to four or five times a day. Once you have him happily stepping up on to your hand you can let him out of the cage to fly around. A big mistake that a lot of people make is leaving the cage door open and allowing the bird to come out by itself. This is not ideal as it teaches the bird that it can get out of the cage with out you and that it has managed to scare the human away, thus it has won and will be less likely to want to be with you and will be less tame.

I hope that helps :)

thanks it helps a lot! he has moved up to the top purch :) he is still not moving around or eating but he seemes to be a little more comfertable. :parrot:

have you got a millet spray? Hanging that up high and near the perch seems to get them going on the food side of things. They love it and it is easy for them to dehull.

adding to Nerwen statement once he starts eating take out the spray because it should then only be given as a treat not as an everyday food to eat ;). Then you can start working on fresh veggies, fruits ;).
