Hi all

Woke up this morning to find a this egg has hatched, the problem is, the other 2 Babies are 11 and 9 days old. I am quite concerned that the little one will get trampled on and get hurt. What should I do?

Jaff

Do you have bedding in the nest? If so what kind of bedding do you use?

Hi,

I don't seem to have any problems of chicks being trampled, when you look into nest box with various ages usually you will find the tiny ones right in the centre and it is usually okay. You could have chicks die from other things but I don't think many would be caused by being trampled. With large clutch's by time last egg is hatched the oldest could be 16-18 days old. I have had 9 chick clutch with no problems.

I only had one clutch and had the same worries. Glad you cleared it up.

As long as the little one is being fed, there shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you all for the fast reply.

It seems to always be under one of the big ones. I use wood shavings for the bedding, but there's not much in there at the moment as mum always kicks it out.

The baby hasnt been feed yet, so I moved it closer to the entrance. Will keep checking regularly.

Regards,

Jaff

Mine trample over each other all the time. nest of 8 when the youngest hatches the oldest will be 16 days old and I've had no problem with the youngest being trampled. Just make sure it has been fed within 24 hrs of hatching. if not it might need a feeding kick start.
