drop dead budgies

in the past two months there has been 8 of my 12 budgies found dead on the floor days apart with no obvious signs of why thay died exepte for green stains on the floor. any body have a clue?!?

I think that whatever is occuring in your flock is a disease, and if you don't act soon your whole flock may be dead. When was the last time you bought a new budgie?

about a week or two befor this started

i bourght them just after i wormed the rest

That is why they are dying. Quarantine stops illness from spreading.

You should seperate each bird, and sterilise everything. Take the birds to a vet and tell him that you didn't quarintine. He can try and perform tests to diagnose it. If another budgie dies, keep it and take it to an AVIAN vet, who can perform an autopsy.

there are two birds that have been separated from this and iv been trying to breed them and the other two iv taken out of the aviary and in a different cage

do NOT rely on any advice from pet shop staff. Despite what they tell you .....................................they know very little.

 

Sounds like your birds had coccidiosis to me..........or psittacosis.

Has water or damp got into your aviary at all ??

 

Quarantine is a MUST DO thing Joel. Losing birds is the hard lesson you will learn by not quarantining your new birds from your existing flock

Also the green staining on the ground would worry me. I would get to a vet and ask them to do a smear smaple. When you take them in make sure the base of the cage is lined with newspaper. I hope the otherones pull through

Could the green staining be lead poisoning? I agree pet stores usually have no experience. I have had birds die because of their advice ( they told me not to worry about separating them ).

I would look more towards psittacosis or coccidiosis than anything re lead poisoning Ratzy.

 

Answers re conditions in the aviary needed...........wet or damp ? which would account for cocci.

New introductions could have introduced psittacosis.

Both fatal in a short period of time.

i have got the sick budgie problem under control but i have only have 4 left. dose anyone know a breeder that sells budgie in the sydney region, preferably near parramatta.

Since you have no clue what the others died of and have no real solutions, NOW is no time to be adding more budgies. There is obviously gaps in your knowledge and practices with regards to keeping your budgies safe and healthy. You would rather listen to petshop staff re advice and you havent addressed any of the advice you have been given here.

I wouldnt advise you getting any new budgies until you know what went wrong and killed the others

I have to agree with Kaz on this one. Take time and work out what is wrong with your existing flock. You say you that the sick one under control to me that means you have taken it to the vet and gotten a treatment plan? If not what do you mean by under control?

 

I had one Budgie pass on me and his cage mate has just been to the vet to make sure she is also not going to pass. They can hide illness well so you might think they are getting better but they are not.

 

Do not introduce any new birds until you know yours are clean otherwise you will just keep reinfecting the flock and be doing this all over again.

what i meen is the only remaining budgies were compleatly seperated when the new bird was put in. they have had no contact with the other birds. and im only 16 so i carnt exactly drive over to an avian vet and hand over a wad of money to find out what happend. so how do you think i should get the birds checked

Part of owning birds is not just having money to replace them but having a fund saved up for vet fees when things like this happen. If you think you arent old enough to do what has to be done then you need your parents support.

I say again................you still do not know what killed the others..........whether it be from disease, no quarantine, bad management by you as a pet owner, bad conditions in the aviary.

Until you fix what went wrong or know for certain what disease went through there is no point adding more birds. If you have money to buy more birds then you should have used that money for an autopsy on at least one of the birds. Then you would have a real answer you could work with.

Meanwhile study up on psittacosis, coccidiosus and quarantine.................all facts available on this forum and learn something from it.

I understand not having the money and also that some people see Budgies as cheap items. If your parent will not help you then I suggest not getting anymore and trying your best to keep the remaining healthy for now.

 

So some tips would be to show us some pictures of your set up, maybe we can see something that is causing the issue that you can't.

 

Is the food getting wet? I lost half my flock once due to this. Where are the birds kept, what are you feeding them, how is their water kept. Are you giving them anything else such as multi vits in the water or any other extras.

 

I would keep everyone seperate and also clean everything. If you can get your hands on some F10 then that is great if not then try warm water and vinger as a start, clean clean clean clean and then clean again to be on the safe side. Check what the perches and toys are made out of and if unsure again post pictures as we might be able to help.

I agree with what the others are saying that you should not be getting more birds for the moment. I have a money tin with a lot of money just for my birds as dad refuses to pay for vet bills. I suggest you put half your allowance aside for emergancies with your budgies. Or something like that. We are not trying to be mean. We are just trying to help.

I myself have a low opinion of mot pet stores and would not recommend asking for advice there unless you know they have a lot of experience.
