Budgies Just Wont Breed

hi all.

i have had my aviary for many years now i have got new birds male and females, put more boxes in. i am colony breeding as i dont have the time and money to individually do it and im just after breeding for enjoyment not for colours. i cant get them to breed. ive seen 2 birds mating but nothing happened all the birds seem to be paired up and kissing one and other but i dont know whats wrong.

i feed them with silverbeat and celery 3-4 times a week too

any help would be greatly apreciated

Any budgie.....in condition, happy, fed right, and under good living and breeding conditions WILL BREED.

Something must be going on. Pictures of your set up would be great. Things I think of off the top of my head is are you sure there are no mice or rats getting into the avairy and eating any eggs that get laid? Are there more nest boxes then pairs, there needs to be more otherwise fights will break out over the nest boxes. You sure you have males and females? May sound stupid but I know someone who had one male and 5 females and the male had no intrest in any of the hens so it was a bust. You say you have had your avairy for many years but just got new birds, are all the birds new or only some? If they are all new how old are they and how long has you been waiting for them to breed? if they are all new and young you may a a few months wait on your hands. Also where are you? It might be to cold for them at the moment being the middle of winter and then come spring they will get with the program. Also what are your nest boxes like? if they are two big or to small this can deter Budgie from using them.

 

So more info is needed, pictures of your set up and of your Budgie would also be good. I am sure someone will be able to help you and get you on the right track.

Well....you are colony breeding and have nestboxes real close on a shelf.......

too close is one problem. Some birds stop others using their chosen boxes.

 

Birds look hunched up and not all that healthy and vital................

 

draughts............you have mesh on three sides of the aviary so looks like you would have draughts from side to side as well.

Mesh goes all the way to ground does it ?? If so mice can just get through the mesh ( they can get through 10-12mm dimaeter ).

Where is the food source ? Ground ? If so mice will go through it and contaminate the food. Wire ? if feeders hang off the wire mice can go through it as well.

Whats the floor of the aviary consist of and whats down there ?

the mesh is around it because of cats that have recently got a few of my birds.i am colony breeding because im 15yrs old and dont have the time and money to individualy take every pair out so they can mate. and ive had birds breed before like this back at my old townthe birds might be hunched because it is 6 degrees at the moment the food is seed and grit and silverbeat ocasionalythe floor is concrete slab i made. with quaillthankscamand the seeder hangs from the roofcam

I was talking about normal aviary mesh.............mice can get through normal diameter mesh especially if it goes all the way to the ground like most aviaries do.

I suggest you stop the cold wind by covering the sides of the aviary for shelter and warmth.

Cats around at night would stress the birds and interfere with their sleep. That could make them unwell too.

Grit you dont need for budgies.

You talked before about breeding cages once...........you didnt end up making any ?

 

Fact is you are having no success now anyway, so why not try and make a couple of breeding cabinets. You can make them out of almost anything that doesnt cost money. I know someone who made his out of that metal shelving for workshops and he meshed it in. Another who made breeding cabinets out of an old pantry cupboard.

This is the kind of hobby that needs you to put something into it ( whether it is money or effort ) to gain the rewards.

It isnt just about add nestboxes and you have babies to sell. Nothing is that easy.

the birds wont bred when that cold

mate wait till its no lower than 15 degree day and night

this is still to cold but birds can breed in that temp

but 6 degree thats asking alot

 

kaz is right about the cats stressing the birds they wont breed if they think its a dangerous spot to raise a family

try hanging a shade cloth cover over whole aviary at night and lifting durring days

also try putting boxes closer to roof and another half foot apart

 

i wouldnt try bred just one pair three is least id breed at once as things can go wrong and you may need a nother pair or to to help raise chicks in need of help

There is a lot of light going into the nest boxes from your pictures,turn the nest boxes around so the hole is facing the back wall, follow what everyone else has said in this thread and maybe get them on B12 that should spark them up.

i have made a breeding cabnet. i have had them in there for 3 days i have put the box on straight away is that right? and they seem to be more intersented in escaping haha is that normal?
