  1. Hi, tonight my sister in law dropped off a little blue budgie she found on her doorstep. It was fretting so she caught it and brought it over to me because i own two cockatiels, a quaker and an eclectus. I willingly took it in as an animal lover, put it in a spare cage i had and upon closer inspection i noticed possible abnormalities on its little face and feet. It kind of looks like overgrowth or maybe it has been hurt? Or maybe it is nothing at all. I have provided some photos, if you have any idea what it is please let me know, I am scared of it being actually hurt. Note: the budgie doesn't seem to be in pain, it is content on sitting on a perch all fluffed up and it has had a bit of water and a little bit of food but he keeps picking at his sore foot and can't seem to keep his eyes open. http://i.imgur.com/NXO3RIa.jpg http://i.imgur.com/DQLNtVz.jpg Edit: the claws on its feet are actually bound together with skin, is this a deformity or some sort of infection?
  2. I have two green budgies: Male and Female. I came home today and went to go check on my birds. However, once I checked that inside the cage the male budgie was at the bottom of the cage, and it had puffed up feathers. Then when I reached my hand in the cage it went on a perch. It was still puffed up and standing on one leg. The top of its head was also strange, as the feathers covering the head were uneven. What should I do? Is my budgie sick? I'm very concerned for my budgie I don't want it to die
  3. I am currently breeding a pair of green budgies and so far I have two baby budgies in the nesting box. They are around 3-4 weeks in age, and there is a lot of droppings in the nesting box. Sadly, one of the baby budgies have severely splayed legs, and tried using the sponge method. The baby budgie with the splint is occasionally slipping on the droppings and so I need to clean the nesting box. One time I tried cleaning the nesting box but then the budgie parents were terrified and they started flying all over the cage. Is there a way for me to clean the nesting box without scaring the parent budgies as much? I'd appreciate the help, Aquafroste
  4. I had setup my breeding pair about 2 weeks ago and everything was looking fine they started mating in 3 day's and the female spends most of the time in the nest box. but recently i have noticed that the female is plucking her vent feathers, she isnt showing any signs of egg binding and is spending 2/3 of the day in the nestbox her poop is huge just like usual and isnt watery or abnormal , she doesnt sit on the floor I have breed budgies before and know what im doing i just find this strange because my last breeding pair layed fertile egg's 5 day's after mating
  5. I think this chick is roughly 19 days old not 100 % on age. I am wanting to know what the birds sex is if possible and also what colour does everyone think , I see blue feathers coming through on the chest just wondering what its called . Any help is appreciated .Thanks https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151635270633915&set=pcb.10151635271078915&type=1&theater , https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151635270973915&set=pcb.10151635271078915&type=1&theater
  6. Hi, I found blue beautiful budgie whos wing was hurt ( about 1,5 months ago, now everything is okay ). Near train station in Freo. Green leg ring R&T C......WA. Let me know if its your little friend. Best regards, Rita
  7. hi guys, i was just curious if i could grow some seed and put it into the budgie cage until the bird has began to destroy it haha if i was to grow some seed, i would grow more then one pot of it so i could rotate through so the budgie wouldnt destroy the whole thing and i would give the seed/ plant some time to grow back. P.S: this will be fore my inside budgie, not my aviary birds. Thankyou.
  8. Hi im new here i beleive i nay have an odd budgie ? okay well ive had him a couple of mnths, hes 8 mnths old, from a flock off a breeder, he settled in rather quick and its content.. But thats not the issue! okay hes escaped the cage once and had to catch with a towel, hes been on my finger twice by accident, he hates hands, will eat millet stick because its a distance and took ages to get him to, but the second my finger goes near him hes off. I hold my hand in constantly hes not botherd, ill fumble and rearange his toys hes not botherd, he also dont even play with anything, he climbs about, has a mirror which he will socialise with but no interest in a human. Hes always been that way. It breaks my heart because im so persistant and been at it for ages, and hes just not interested to bond or play I was told he was semi tame and realise it was a lie, he hates hands. I offerd some peices of orange but nahh hands too close, its millet or nothing with this one.. Makes me sad he just shows nothing and plays with nothing just sits there babbling and climbing..
  9. Hi guys my male budgie has recently started to develop some red marks around his cere (top of beak). And has dry feet. He is eating, but isnt as active as he usually is. Is my budgie sick? What can i do? Please help, any help and/or advice will be appreciated.
  10. Hi guys, I'm really keen to buy a budgie that I can tame and teach it to talk, but don't know which sex is the best for it. I've read that males are much more easy to tame as well as not being as aggressive. I also seen that some people have bad experiences with males and aren't good to tame as they don't speak etc. So are female budgies or male budgies better, and which sex is the best to get overall. Hope you guys can help me out Many thanks
  11. I can't take any photos right now, but.. I'm 14, and live with my parents. I refilled a large, half- foot high, less- than- a- foot wide container, and my blue budgie managed to eat it within 2 days, with little help from my yellow budgie. My blue budgie seems fat, because you can't see his keel- and can't run well, but my mother says otherwise. She always spoils our pets. Every pet we get ourselves and want to take care of ourselves, she always spoils them much more. When I told her that he was fat, she ignored that and yelled at me for "not refilling the food". Usually I refill it within 3-4 days (and I was planning on refilling it with a mix of pellets later), but she ignored my claims of protest telling her about what happened. I told her that he was fat, and her response was "don't be ridiculous". She refilled the entire thing with seeds only and let them eat almost all of the seeds. I don't know what to do, because I know that he's fat and my yellow budgie will starve if he and my mother continue this. Any help?
  12. My budgie under 2 months was pecked by a big one and is not using one leg at all. He is eating normally and hopping around in one leg. I applied some turmeric and it is the best I could do. I don't know what else to do. There are no avian vets around my place and cannot travel out due to Lockdown. Please help! I don't know what to do.
  13. Hi there, I'm new here, and I've been trying to tell if my yellow/lutino budgie is male or female, and I would apreciate if somebody could tell me since I'm not really sure, I think it's a male but I need others opion.
  14. I have been trying to tame my budgie for 8 months now and I try and try but he seems to forget everything. And when I have him tame I try to get him out the next day and he started flying away and got realy scared and I don't know if he can't remember me or what...
  15. Hey guys, Just came over to my mums house and saw my sister's bird and it has like these dry looking scaly lumps grown around its face. Also has very scaly feet too. I asked my younger sister why she hadn't noticed and taken it to the vet or at least googled something but she's very ditzy and only young but i'm still mad she didn't tell my mum. It seems quite healthy though he chirps a lot and plays with its toys and has been eating normal. It's hand tamed and about 6 months old just for reference too and apparently my sister said it's been getting worse over time about 2 months after she bought him. So can anyone possibly tell us what maybe wrong with it ? *Please no hate or anything, we want advice so we can literally help it ! Thanks:)
  16. I had my parakeets for over a year now, and i feel like they still have not warmed up to me yet, i dont want to give up on them but feel like i am. what should i do
  17. My budgie flew into my bathroom unexpectedly and landed on the floor. Then he ran to a tiny nook under the corner of a cabinet under the sink and he hasn’t come out for a long time now. The big problem is, he isn’t that tame yet so it’s harder for me to save him...I can’t see him at all. It seems he is moving around freely and is confined to a narrow space between the cabinet and the wall. Someone please help me...It’s been 2 hours and he still hasn’t come out...
  18. Hey, is it okay to use this nestbox for my parakeets couple ? basically it's a cockatiel nestbox but it's the best I can find in my area concerning the quality of wood and the size, it's a bit large for a parakeet I guess but would it be a problem ?
  19. Hello! I have had my boy for nearly a year and the past few months his cere hasn't been quite right. At first it was only a small amount, but it has gotten worse. He eats well, mainly seeds, but i feed him plenty of fruits, veg and greens! (Blueberries, carrots, mint, lettuce, parsley, apple etc) He is acting as normal as ever too, very happy and loving. I let him out a few times a week to stretch his wings and i keep his cage clean too, so I'm unsure where this could have come from. I have attached some photos for reference, to me it looks dry? maybe from the odd whether, but i just thought i would reach out for some advice! I may take him to a vet soon to get it checked out..
  20. My winter project this year was to build an indoor aviary for our growing budgie family. The pet shop cages stacked on top of each other in true redneck fashion just wasn't doing it. We used Redwood with a red Oak stain sealed with polyurethane for the frame, Tenax 1'X3/4" (2.5cm X 1.8cm) vinyl garden netting for the mesh, coconuts for feeders and Raffia Tiki Huts to protect their internal water dishes from downfall. It's designed with modular internal panels so it can be configured anywhere from 1 up to 8 separate compartments. It is currently set up for four breeding pairs. I had a hard time deciding on the mesh, worried about the larger than usually recommended spacing and vinyl durability, but I have been super pleased with it. It's big enough that neighbors can feed each other and interact freely, yet there's no unauthorized hanky-pankys goings on. They have plucked and chewed it with no breakage or wear. The best part is it so much finer than wire that you can really enjoy watching your little friends unobstructed. There have been no tangles or strangles at all, completely safe for them. okay, full disclosure, Azure our blue hen did get her split leg band hooked on it once but released with only a few "fowl" frantic parakeet words. I also had some concerns about the four large, full frontal, front doors with 180 degree swing, but we have found even with the doors wide open they are content to stay inside and readily return on their own when they do go on a little walkabout. The perches are two different diameters, free hanging and all laddered together with 550 paracord for that "swinging in the breeze" effect every time someone perches or lands. It is lighted with 8 feet (2.44m) of LED fluorescent lighting in three banks, set on a timer, dimming to 200 white LED "Christmas" lights for that starry night effect, before turning off for the night. A bottom shelf carries all the food and supplies for their care. Kinda' fun and the birds sure seem to enjoy the space to fly a little. We currently have 12 hatchlings and 6 eggs to go! >It's like living in the Outback, sleeping to baby 'keets cricketing all night then waking every morning to symphonies of cheerful rambunctious singing!<
  21. Hi everyone, I had a very happy little baby girl budgie called Baby because she didn’t have fully developed wings and her tail wasn’t grown. She was 1 of 6 in the family and she was much loved. I found her puffed up and trying to sleep so i got her out of the cage and gave her cuddles and she wouldn’t let go.. the whole night, she just wanted to cuddle. I was cuddling her all the next morning and was very worried about her. She wouldn’t sit on her perch. She had bubbles coming from her mouth and just wanted to sit on the floor of that cage in the blankets. I came home from school to find her cold and deceased. I don’t know what caused this and i would like to know to have some closer. I bought budgies as a way to help me cope with stress and anxiety and just when i was getting better, my baby girl left. She made me so happy. She made me smile when no one else could. Yesterday i was the happiest i had been in a long long time. Until i came home to that. Getting the stress and depression back now missing her dearly. Could someone PLEASE explain what might have happened to my poor baby girl??
  22. Hi guys, this afternoon i noticed my 21 day old budgie's feathers ( just a few) on the bottom of the nest box. In the last few days the hen has been spending quite a bit more time in the nest box. i saw her trying to pull out her baby's feathers earlier this afternoon, the baby was screeching loudly, so i immediately looked it up on the internet. the website recommended removing the hen. I have done this to prevent her from attacking her chick and i am hoping the cock will pick up on looking after the baby as the website said he would. could i please have some advice asap? what do i do? have i done the right thing? how can i make sure the male is feeding his baby?
  23. I am a huge bird lover and have mainly had larger parrots in the past (cockatoo, king, Lori) I had a budgie as a kid and have decided for my current lifestyle budgies are the best bird for me for now. These two are bringing me much joy and the get along great and already responding to a small amount of training and can step up etc. love preening each other! Only very young and pretty sure of Kevin’s sex (blue one) as his cere is nice and blue…..Nellie is a bit younger and hers is purplish at present I initially thought she was a little hen but now I’m think maybe a male too? Love the way the fluff up when they preen each other first thing of a morning….well Nellie does more to Kevin than he does to her/him.
  24. My budgie does not display any other symptoms of illness but I noticed something on his beak and I need to check if this is what a mite infestation looks like. Please let me know if you have any ideas what is causing this and do I need to take him to the vet?
