Posted May 10, 200619 yr I had to take Frankie to the vet today for her shots, so I decided to book in with the avian vet for a check up for Sunny, as I wasn't happy with his breathing, and wanted a well bird check anyway. So Frankie went first, and the avian vet treats both birds and other animals, so Frankie gets a C3 shot, a squirt up the nose for a kennel cough vaccine and a microchip (poor baby - she cried - Frankie is my puppy By The Way for anyone reading this who might not have seen previous posts) The vet checked out Sunny thoroughly, took a sample of poop and observed him, and said he may have a respitory infection, so he prescribed some Psittavet Powder to mix in his water, and $150 later, we were on our way. I went straight home and Frankie was a bit uneasy, I thought sore from all the shots, so I tried to settle her down, but she wouldn't settle. She climbed into a basket of washing I was about to fold up and did a piddle on the clothes, I called out her name and she looked at me and her whole face had swollen up I grabbed the phone and called the vet, so they told me to bring her straight back, and said she has had a reaction to the injections. She had to have another two injections (she was so good) another $15 and we were on our way again. The swelling has started to go down now, but she is not a happy puppy at the moment At least now she wont have to have another one for a year. Here are some before and after pics Before - taken yesterday - 09/05/06 After - taken this afternoon after 2nd trip to the vet 10/05/06 And of course, one of Sunny, as he is featured in this story as well!! ***Mods if this should be in off topic please move it for me!! Thanks *** Edited May 10, 200618 yr by Riebie
May 10, 200619 yr Ohhh......poor baby. Good thing you were with Frankie to notice the changes and get her straight back to the vets
May 10, 200619 yr oh poor Frankie. yeah, good thing that you were on the ball!! Though i have to say Frankie looks kinda adorable all poofy like that.. hehe... but of course the original face is much cuter. Sunny is gorgeous!!
May 10, 200619 yr oh my goodness I am happy both of your babies are okay. I totally freak out when bad things happen to our pets. I would contact the place you purchased Sunny though, go down there with the vet bill and inform them so they know for their other birds. I know you didn't have a good experience with the worker so I would go straight to the store owner - and say something. It may not do any good but then they know.
May 10, 200619 yr That's good that they're both sorted now. I agree about taking the vet bill to the pet store; it's worth a try and you'll at least feel better that the store will know to have a look at their other birds. As for Frankie's injections, there's something you might want to consider that I talked to my dogs' vet about recently. I haven't really looked into it that much, but you might want to. Apparently, there's some talk in the vet world about the necessity of yearly boosters for immunisation jabs. I think quite a few vets are thinking it's more for the sake of the vet's pocket than it is for the dog. After all, do you have booster jabs for your immunisations every year? Once you're immunised, you're immunised. The booster jabs (say for tetanus) that we're supposed to get every ten years are more precautionary than anything, even doctors admit that. If you think about it in terms of Chicken Pox. Once you've had it, you don't get it again because your body has built up an immunity against that particular disease. That's exactly the same as what an immunisation jab simulates; it introduces a minute amount of the disease into your system to make your body's immune system fight against it and produce the relevant antibodies. My vet suggests boosters every 5 years, just to be on the safe side. There's another vet I know of in my area who just doesn't give boosters as he feels he's ripping people off if he does. If Frankie is going to react this way every time it might be worth doing some research on this. It may all turn out to be just vets having a debate with no real proof, but you could investigate. After all, you've got a year to decide. I'm glad all's well now and they both continue to get better. They both adorable. Puppies and budgies... my favourites!
May 10, 200619 yr Author I bought Sunny from a different pet shop to the one that told me not to get another one - actually this one tried to talk me into buying 2! It was so hard to resist - a beautiful rainbow I will go to the pet shop tomorrow though and advise them of Sunny's illness, that is a great idea - thanks Lovey! Cheeta she did look so cute with her puffy face - she looked like a rolley dog! (a sharpae - not sure how to spell it) I tried so hard not to laugh, cause she looked so funny, I could see the funny side after the panic was over! Poor baby, she is fine now, scoffed down a big dinner, and pretty much back to her normal self. Still not too playful, and slightly puffy, but she should be find after a good nights sleep!
May 10, 200618 yr Just a little sidenote while talking about doggies with swollen faces...I have a little story to tell. When I was a vet nurse in a country town, we had a resident dog that belonged to the surgery. Tubby was his name and he was a mostly white with patches kinda dog ( somewhere between a fox terrier and kelpie cross ). Tubby used to like to catch flies and eat them. One day, we were very, very busy in surgery and Tubby was out in the back yard. After about 2 hours of morning surgery on a Saturday, I went out to check on the animals in the kennels. Tubby was at the back door with a head like a soccer ball !! His face was so swollen his inner cheeks were near to turned inside out. His eyes were closed shut and his tongue was swollen and protruding. It seems poor Tubby had found a bees hive near the back door and proceeded to play chase, catch and eat flies"......only these weren't flies, they were bees. Good thing we were a vets and he hadn't far to go to have treatment. I wish I had a camera back then, but at least he survived okay and got lots of fuss once he was on the road to recovery. I can still picture his face as I relate this story.
May 11, 200618 yr Poor Frankie (who could resist that face) and poor Sunny as well, glad it all worked out in the end.
