Posted May 7, 200619 yr Merlin in deep thought about what it would like to be a "wild" budgie Pretty thinking (you fill in the blank) _________________________.
May 7, 200619 yr Oh they are so gorgeous!! How do you handle keeping them seperated, and still giving them heaps of time and attention?? Bobby is myffed he spent half his day in his cage today - if he knew it was because I was with ANOTHER budgie !!! Edited May 7, 200619 yr by Riebie
May 7, 200619 yr Author Thanks Karen. Riebe it is hard but I keep them mobile meaning if I am in the computer room I keep one of them with me all the time, or if I am in the living room I keep one of them with us all the time. Merlin paces in his cage so that drives me insane and Pretty's chatter is insanely crazy lately because he knows which drives me nuts and Merlin nutter (Laughing out loud). If I take a shower I bring one of them in the bathroom with me and let them fly around with the door locked so no one can open it on accident because of the cats. When I fold laundry, I locked up the cats brought Merlin in the bedroom with me and had him on my shoulder and then on my knee when I sorted socks. My husband thinks I am nuts completely because I have a bird with me all the time. Merlin mostly because Pretty is flighted and he doesn't stay by me at ALL. I am hoping to use Merlin as a training tool and a good example - this was eterri's idea and I love it. I have noticed Pretty is MUCH affecionate when he is in the cage, he comes right up to the cage bars and kiss my nose now and really listens to me talk. Because of this he is now really starting to talk clearer and when I can get him on video talking I will. He says Pretty Poo, Pretty Bird and Stinky Poo . I am impressed with his talking skills. Hope that helps.
May 7, 200619 yr That sounds like me, I either have Bobby on my shoulder, or I am carting a cage around with me!! My house is very open planned with no doors closing off the living areas, so when Bobby is out, Sunny has to be locked in a bedroom I feel so bad when I lock him away! I can't wait till I can walk around with Sunny on my shoulder too! How long was it before you could take Merlin out of his cage??? (sorry to bombard you with Q's!)
May 7, 200619 yr Author I had Merlin out of his cage the same day but he LOVES windows and he still does so he will fly off immediately. My best success is in my bedroom where the blinds are closed and he will then sit there better. Your Bobby is much more trained then Pretty, so I know you will do fine. I would take Sunny into a smaller room with no windows or at least the blinds closed it will really help. Merlin loves the top of his cage so that makes him feel secure too but now I have to hide it because he won't sit on me he will sit on the cage . You did great with Bobby just don't stress but remember Sunny is different personality so he may or may not as easily tame down. Pretty the first week I didn't let him out of his cage, Merlin was out the same day. Pretty came from a pet store and was about 3 months, Merlin was handled and only 7 weeks. So think about the background of both your babies too . Hope that helps. Sounds like the training is going well. Excellent plan for time with each bird. Thanks , Pretty needs more flight time so that is the hard part, Merlin needs more cuddle time for taming. Pretty is pretty and I don't except him to be super friendly like some of these birds. He is very independent, he dives my head for attention and he is spoilt and he knows it. Today I had him in the computer room and once he is out he is like a hyper dog flying around - he knows he way around perfectly, then he will calm down step up and then get that look of cuteness in his eyes and listen to me talk. I can then feel him relax on my hand.
May 7, 200619 yr Thanks Lovey - I guess it's kind of hard to remember how they were when they first came home. I had a terrible time taming Bobby, then one day he just decided he liked me! I can tell things will be different with Sunny - for one I have so much more knowledge now, and also he is already letting me touch him and stepping up. I will let him determine his taming schedule!!!
May 7, 200619 yr Adorable photos lovey and your doing great with them.. be good for all of you when they can spend time together
May 7, 200619 yr Author oh another thing I do is even if I can't spend out time with them, I am always walking past Pretty's cage and talking to him and Merlin I will take out of his because he lets me pick him up and give him a quick cuddle and smooch. The little moments help too . Like I said just those quick moments by the cage talking to Pretty has improved his talking.
May 8, 200619 yr I love that photo of Pretty! So cute! I know how you guys must be feeling. I hated juggling my time between Blinkie and Ozzie. I felt really bad that Ozzie had to stay locked in my room but it's worth it in the end.
